    Replication Data for Changing perceptions of forest value and attitudes toward management of a recently established nature reserve: A case study in Southwest China.

    Identifying the main sources of conflict and understanding the relationships between protected areas and local communities are critical to conflict resolution related to protected area management. We surveyed and assessed the perceptions of local people related to forest values of the Bulong Nature Reserve (BNR), Yunnan, China, and their attitudes toward forest management of the recently-established nature reserve. Factors influencing the differences in perceptions and attitudes were investigated. Our results indicated local residents preferred the economic value of forests, and they perceived more forest values after reserve establishment than before, especially for ecological services. Interviewees believed the value of the forests have increased, and predicted that the forest will have increased importance to their livelihoods and health in the future. Nonetheless, the majority of interviewees were dissatisfied with current reserve management. Variation in these perceptions and attitudes were related to several social variables: age, gender, education, and distance from the reserve. Embedding the findings of the present study, specifically the perceptions and attitudes of local people, into management guidelines for mitigation of potential conflicts is proposed and should help managers to achieve biodiversity-related goals. This study offers new insights related to the identification of the underlying sources of conflict in forest management and provides a better understanding of the relationship between local people and protected areas.     There is very little published information about variation in the wood properties of African tree species. To expand markets for wood products from these species, we must understand the factors that affect wood properties, and select the best species and sites to produce wood with the preferred properties. Wood color may be affected by edaphic and climatic conditions, tree age, wood density, and other biological and environmental factors. The major objective of this research was to determine if the mean and variability of wood color variables (L*, a*, and b*) of Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Delile, Combretum glutinosum Perr. ex DC., Guiera senegalensis J.F. Gmel., Piliostigma reticulatum (DC.) Hochst., and Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. trees varied among regions, soil types, land-use types, and terrain types; and were linearly related with geographical coordinates and mean annual rainfall in the Sahelian and Sudanian ecozones of Mali. Correlations were also investigated among color variables and between wood density and color variables. Results indicated that there was considerable intraspecific variation in wood color variables due to all factors except land-use type; variation patterns were similar for some wood color variables and species, but there were notable differences among some species; and correlations amo ng wood color variables and wood density differed among some species

    Mutualistic interactions are embedded in networks of interactions that affect the benefits accruing to the mutualistic partners. Figs and their pollinating wasps are engaged in an obligate mutualism in which the fig is dependent on the fig pollinator for pollination services and the pollinator is dependent on fig ovules for brood sites. This mutualism is exploited by non-pollinating fig wasps that utilise the same ovules, but do not provide a pollination service. Most non-pollinating wasps oviposit from outside the inflorescence (syconium), where they are vulnerable to ant predation. Ficus schwarzii is exposed to high densities of non-pollinating wasps, but Philidris sp. ants patrolling the syconia prevent them from ovipositing. Philidris rarely catch wasps, but the fig encourages the patrolling by providing a reward through extra-floral nectaries on the surface of syconia. Moreover, the reward is apparently only produced during the phase when parasitoids are ovipositing. An ant-exclusion experiment demonstrated that, in the absence of ants, syconia were heavily attacked and many aborted as a consequence. Philidris was normally rare on the figs during the receptive phase or at the time of day when wasp offspring are emerging, so predation on pollinators was limited. However, Myrmicaria sp. ants, which only occurred on three trees, preyed substantially on pollinating as well as non-pollinating wasps. F. schwarzii occurs in small clusters of trees and has an exceptionally rapid crop turnover. These factors appear to promote high densities of non-pollinating wasps and, as a consequence, may have led to both a high incidence of ants on trees and increased selective pressure on fig traits that increase the payoffs of the fig–ant interaction for the fig. The fig receives no direct benefit from the reward it provides, but protects pollinating wasps that will disperse its pollen

    The high species richness of tropical forests has long been recognized, yet there remains substantial uncertainty regarding the actual number of tropical tree species. Using a pantropical tree inventory database from closed canopy forests, consisting of 657,630 trees belonging to 11,371 species, we use a fitted value of Fisher’s alpha and an approximate pantropical stem total to estimate the minimum number of tropical forest tree species to fall between ∼40,000 and ∼53,000, i.e., at the high end of previous estimates. Contrary to common assumption, the Indo-Pacific region was found to be as species-rich as the Neotropics, with both regions having a minimum of ∼19,000–25,000 tree species. Continental Africa is relatively depauperate with a minimum of ∼4,500–6,000 tree species. Very few species are shared among the African, American, and the Indo-Pacific regions. The program has been implemented over 4 year period, from 2007 to 2011, jointly with government departments (Extension Services, Agricultural Research Services, Land Resource Conservation) and a local research and training institution (Bunda College of Agriculture).     This study consists of village level baseline data and other related materials generated as part of the ‘Sentinel Landscapes’ initiative. The village level baseline data was collected using four survey protocols designed by the International Forest Resources and Institutions (IFRI). The data collected is used to understand the relationship between communities, local governance and forests. Four IFRI protocols were used for this purpose: (i) Forest Form (ii) Settlement Form (iii) Association Form and (iv) Product Form. The instruments facilitate the collection of political and institutional data at communal level for those communities that use those forests.     Utilizing the Nutritional Potential and Secondary Plant Compounds of Neglected Fruit Trees and Other Plant Species of the Walnut-Fruit Forests in Kyrgyzstan

    Forests make significant contributions to safeguarding agricultural production, food security, and nutrition of rural and urban populations. The walnut-fruit forests in Kyrgyzstan constitute a unique resource in this regard and are of global importance as a biodiversity hotspot. However, current patterns of forest management are unsustainable, vast parts of the forests are overaged, and derived benefits are unequally distributed among local populations. Walnut (Juglans regia L.) kernels have traditionally been used for human diets and constitute an economically important product of these forests. Although the walnut value chain in Kyrgyzstan is of significant economic importance, the level of domestic processing is weak and locally manufactured outputs are of low quality. The SUSWALFOOD project (BMBF, funding code 01DK17016) aims at contributing to the development of nutritious food from neglected and underutilized plant species of the Kyrgyz walnut-fruit forests, thereby improving local food security, promoting sustainable forest management, and increasing local incomes. Initial analyses have investigated timber growth of walnut trees and quality parameters of respective nuts from various parts of the forests. Regarding quality parameters, nut dimensions and weight, kernel weight, and rupture force were determined to result in a classification of the investigated trees. Results show that most trees are old and may, therefore, be anticipated to display declining walnut yields, underlining the need for forest rejuvenation. Timber and nut quality varied considerably across the study area. These results will facilitate the selection of superior trees for forest regeneration. Further work in this project aims to (a) analyze the nutritional composition and secondary plant compounds of other selected plant species of the walnut-fruit forests and their potential use in new food products; (b) further investigate the morphology, diversity, and plant-soil interaction of these species to determine their biological productivity and to support sustainable management and conservation efforts; and (c) examine pecific impacts of traditional and contemporary utilizationincluding market chains and cost-benefit assessments at the household level
