    The Building Biocarbon and Rural Development in West Africa Programme aims to demonstrate the multiple developmental and environmental wins that result from a high value biocarbon approach to climate change and variability in large landscapes principally in Mali, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The Programme will also build local institutions and capacity to be able to sustain the benefits in the sites and will establish linkages with related initiatives to jointly build national and regional capacity to scale up the approaches into other programmes and projects. The themes of the Programme are very closely linked to Finlandâs international development priorities and are closely aligned with the priorities expressed in its national poverty reduction and climate change a daptation strategies. Furthermore, the Programme aims to generate critical information that can fill the global knowledge gaps on how to better link climate change mitigation and adaptation thrusts and how to make these actions work effectively to enhance the livelihoods of rural communities

    Rural Migration and the Feminization of Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa. A Mixed-Methods Study

    This data was the qualitative component of a mixed methods project studying rural migration in Sub-Saharan Africa. The data was located in Tanzania and Ethiopia by local teams composed on 1 lead researcher and 4 enumerators. In Tanzania the data collection took place in June 2019 in two rural locations in Babati and Kilolo. In Ethiopia the data collection took place in July 2019 in Mecha woreda in West Gojjam and Dessie Zuria woreda in South Wollo in the region of Amhara. In each country the data collected was: a) 70 interviews (40 in Ethiopia and 30 in Tanzania) with women from households that had at least 1 migrant; b) 8 focus group discussion (4 in each site) disaggregated by age and sex; c) between 17 (Ethiopia) and 30 (Tanzania) interviews with migrants in their new locations. The interviews were then transcribed into English for analysis; d) key informant interviews (1 or 2 in each site

    Replication Data for: Participatory forest management in Burkina Faso: members’ perception of performance

    This study examines variations in the performance of participatory forest management programs among four forest management groups (FMGs) in southern Burkina Faso, and assesses the factors that influence their members’ perceptions of performance through a household survey of 216 members. Variations in performance scores among the FMGs were analyzed through multivariate analysis of variance while multinomial regression analysis was used to identify factors that influence their perception of the performance. The results reveal significant differences in performance scores among FMGs. Members of some FMGs perceived that the participatory forest management program enabled them to get benefits from the sale of fuelwood while performance scores in the forest conservation and decision-making processes is generally poor. The score for economic performance of FMGs in turn was related to better access to roads and markets. Group size tended to enhance economic performance via its strong influence on annual fuelwood harvest, while the resource base appeared to be inconsequential. Members of the forest management groups perceived that large group size and group heterogeneity, particularly in terms of ethnicity, as well as knowledge and awareness of problems related to the forest environment have no influence on the performance of their respective groups. For rural communities to have a favorable disposition toward sustainable forest management, differences in member understanding of collective actions and their impact before and during the implementation of participatory forest management programs should be considered
