Evidence-based Soils Agronomy for Sustainable Crop Production in Muranga County, Kenya
The project ‘Improved Agricultural Measurement for Evidence-based Investments in Improved Crop Production in Kenya’ was funded by The Nature Conservancy. The project used soil-plant diagnostic method developed at the World Agroforestry (ICRAF) to quantify soil health constraints for maize production and targeting interventions to improve soil health for agronomic gain. We tested soil and maize plant tissues to estimate macro and micronutrients and compared it with optimum plant nutrient requirements. The project was piloted in in Muranga County, Kenya.The Nature Conservancy (TNC) project dataset contains laboratory results of 524 top (0-20 cm) and sub soil (20-50 cm) soil and 206 plant tissue properties. The samples are from targeted 170 farms in Nginda, Kambiti in Maragua sub county and Kangema and Kigumo sub-counties in Muranga county of Kenya in East Africa. The datasets include MIR spectra, plant macronutrients and micronutrients measured at the World Agroforestry (ICRAF) Soil and Plant Spectral Diagnostic Laboratory and extracatable nutrients results from Crop Nutrition Laboratory Services

Review of extension systems in Burundi- Kayanza Province
Key informant interviews (KIIs) were conducted with the aim of understanding the structure of agricultural extension in Burundi. The interviews formed part of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural research (ACIAR) funded ‘Trees for Food Security’ project work package 3 activities- Reporting on different extension methods and their suitability for different contexts. Tree Crops Development in Africa and Asia to Benefit the Poor - Fruit Component
The goal of the project is to reduce rural poverty in Kenya and Mali by promoting wealth and health of poor farming communities through enhanced cultivation, processing, marketing and use of a diversity of fruit trees. The proposed project also aims at contributing to the transition of small-scale farming systems from subsistence farming to intensified semi-commercial farming of fruit trees and of small-scale private or community tree nurseries and micro-processors to more business-oriented a
nd profitable enterprises. Specifically, the project has the following objectives: Analyse the status quo of the whole fruit sector (including current seedling supply systems, production, processing, domestic/export markets and consumption) and its potentials/challenges to develop impact-oriented interventions and site-specific fruit tree portfolios. Provide farmers with access to high quality fruit tree planting material by establishing sustainable, decentralized
seedling supply systems (the Rural Resource Centre model).
Increase and disseminate knowledge on improved fruit tree propagation and on-farm tree management techniques. Build capacity of fruit producers and micro-processors on fruit post-harvest technologies, value adding, marketing and business skills. Increase awareness on the health benefits of regular fruit consumption of rural and urban households, particularly of children. </ol
Replication Data for: Distribution and in situ conservation of a relic Chinese oil woody species Xanthoceras sorbifolium (Yellowhorn)
To understand the contemporary and anticipated future (future 30–50 years) distribution of Chinese wild yellowhorn (Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge) and to improve the species’ in situ conservation strategy within the network of China’s National Nature Reserves (NNR), we used BiodiversityR to predict the species’ distribution utilizing the “always-suitable” map concept. We then delineated the always-suitable distributions with the existing NNRs to identify potential conservation areas using an approach that concurrently considered spatial distribution, gap analysis, the role of climate change, and economic analyses. Seven bioclimatic variable predictors and 12 environmental niche modelling submodels successfully contributed to the final model assembly (AUC = 0.916, = 0.398). The species range delineation indicated that 71 of the 427 NNRs were included in the always-suitable area, accounting for 26 007 km2 (1.58%) of the species total distribution. This mapping endeavour highlighted the negative impact of climate change with a projected 15%–20% habitat decline and expected species’ distribution centers shifting from the country’s northwest to the southeast. Our results predict the continuous deterioration of X. sorbifolium because of its existing utilization as an oil source and its increased bioenergy potential. The adoption of a flexible management strategy embracing acceptable trade-offs between conservation and utilization within China’s NNRs could effectively alleviate the expected species decline
