Sygnola Tsafack and Ann Degrande (2015) The Value of Printed Sources of Information in Agricultural Extension Case Study on “The Farmer’s Voice” in Cameroon, MEAS Evaluative Case Study
Various methods are used to provide extension workers and farmers with agricultural information. Printed materials remain a major source of information, despite digitalization of information networks, but few studies have looked at their effectiveness. The present work characterizes and assesses the effectiveness of The Farmer’s Voice (TFV), an agricultural newspaper in Cameroon. Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire from 107 randomly sampled readers (mainly farmers, lead farmers and extension workers) in three regions.
Most respondents subscribed to TFV and paid fees themselves. The time readers took to read completely the magazine varied with gender, reader category, and education level. Respondents recalled topics such as technical tips and health/nutrition much more than others. For 94 percent of users, the motivation to read TFV was to learn appropriate practices on production, consumption, and marketing.
Though TFV was a complementary source of agricultural knowledge for most respondents, 97.2 percent were using information from this magazine on a day-to-day basis. Most respondents kept copies of TFV, mainly for future reference. More women than men and more subscribers than occasional buyers preserved copies.
All respondents agreed that TFV had significantly contributed to changes in their farming practices. For farmer trainers, TFV was very useful in their extension and advisory activities. Though more than four-fifths of readers had learned about new farming practices through TFV, 27.2 percent were not able to master some of the techniques described in TFV. The difference can be explained by their low education level. Around one-third of respondents said they were willing to share information with others through TFV; very few (11.5 percent) had written to the journal.
The majority of users found TFV easy to read and understand. The current price was just about right for 52.8 percent of readers, and 76.8 percent said the quality of the journal was good. Less than one-fourth of respondents (23.4 percent) were able to specify a journal that could substitute for or complement TFV. Most users of TFV (83.5 percent) confirmed that the content of the journal is relevant to all types of farmers. The average score of the general effectiveness of the TFV was 8 out of 10 (min = 5, max = 10, median = 8).
The majority of subscribers complained about not receiving their monthly issue on time. Distribution coverage was also low, especially in the rural areas and in towns where there is no official distributor. Some respondents criticized TFV for not sufficiently dealing with topics such as fund-raising, agroforestry and processing of agricultural products

Tree Shelterbelts as an Element to Improve Water Resource Management in Central Asia
In Central Asia, agriculture, notably irrigated agriculture, is the largest water consumer.
Currently, flood and furrow irrigation are the dominant irrigation methods in Central Asia, in particular in the post-Soviet countries. Against the background of current and increasing competition for water—e.g., through reduced river runoffs in the course of climate change—water consumption of agriculture needs to be reduced. On the field plot level, improved irrigation technologies, like dripi rrigation or plastic mulch, can reduce water consumption substantially. Alternatively, tree lines as wind breaks (shelterbelts) also can reduce crop water consumption, as shown by research from many drylands around the world. As previous research has concentrated on crop water consumption and not on tree water consumption, this paper brings the two together, in order to approach a more holistic picture, in how far shelterbelt systems, including the trees, may have the potential to save water or not. Crop water consumption was assessed through the Penman–Monteith approach for corn, wheat, potato, barley, and pear under open field conditions and under an assumed influence of a tree shelterbelt. Tree water consumption was investigated through sap flow measurements. Crop water consumption was reduced by 10–12% under influence of a shelterbelt compared to open field conditions. When water consumption of shelterbelts was added, a slight reduction of water consumption of the whole crop-shelterbelt system was found for corn, potato, and pear under the assumption 25 ha (500 × 500 m) field sizes. Under anassumption of 4 ha (200 × 200 m) field size, water consumption of the crop-shelterbelt systemwas higher for all crops investigated except for pear. The results suggest that shelterbelts may play a role in improving water resource management in Central Asia in the context of water demanding crops, like corn or cotton. In further research, other effects of shelterbelts, like increased crop yields and additional income from trees, need to be investigated
A critique of current trends in the statistical analysis of seed germination and viability data Seed Science Research
Statistical analysis is increasingly used in seed germination/viability studies across different disciplines. The objective of this opinion piece is to assess current trends in statistical analysis of such data, and draw attention of readers to the limitations of the usual inferential statistics in controlling error rates. The assessments are based on a survey of 429 papers published in 139 peer-reviewed journals in the past 11 years. My intention is to identify areas of concern across a wide range of studies. Accordingly, the areas of greatest concern found in the analysis of percentage seed germination and viability data were: (1) pseudoreplication and/or use of a few replicates; (2) ignoring assumptions of ANOVA and non-parametric tests (NPARTs); (3) uncritical data transformation; (4) arbitrary choice of multiple comparison tests; and (5) lack of emphasis on effect sizes. Given the prevalence of these problems, in my opinion we would be building a body of knowledge on a shaky ground. The discussions that follow will: (1) describe situations where germination data violate assumptions of ANOVA and NPARTs; (2) highlight the implications of the various problems to Type I and Type II error rates; and (3) indicate remedial measures based on the recent statistical literature
Trees for Food Security Project-Local Knowledge-Tree management and impact of management on trees’ phenology in Oromiya region, Ethiopia
The research investigated the impact of management on the phenology of Acacia tortilis, Faidherbia albida, Croton macrostachyus, Dichrostachys cinerea and Ziziphus mucronata. The trees were selected, as they were dominant species, in two sites in a parkland system in Oromiya region, Ethiopia. The main purposes of this research were to elicit local knowledge about the effect of common management practices on phenology, the effect of management on tree – crop interaction and if management practices affects the tree size. Data mainly were collected by semi – structured interview and in combination with participatory research tools. This research found that pollarding, pruning and coppicing were three common management practices in both sites that farmers have a broad knowledge about them and they use from each one of these practices under the special circumstances for example they never do the pollarding when the trees are still so young. The farmers’ local knowledge suggested that the practice of pollarding was found to have a significant impact on the timing of flushing and flowering of all five species at both sites Tree management can change the tree - crop interaction. Except the managed F. albida trees, crops grow better under the other managed trees, as they have no shade and no water dropping on crops. Unmanaged F. albida has no leaf at the time of cropping but when farmers do the pollarding these trees start leaf flushing only 1 week to one month after pollarding and when they have leaves they have more light and water competition with crops so the crop productivity decrease under the managed F. albida

This book documents a decade of research, methodological innovation, and lessons learned in an eco-regional research-for-development program operating in the eastern African highlands, the African Highlands Initiative (AHI). It does this through reflections of the protagonists themselves—AHI site teams and partners applying action research to development innovation as a means to enhance the impact of their research. The book summarizes the experiences of farmers, research and development workers and policy and decision-makers who have interacted within an innovation system with the common goal of implementing an integrated approach to natural resource management (NRM) in the humid highlands. This book demonstrates the crucial importance of “approach” in shaping the outcomes of research and development, and distils lessons learned on what
works, where and why. It is enriched with examples and case studies from five benchmark sites in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya, whose variability provides the reader with an in-depth knowledge of the complexities of integrated NRM in ago-ecosystems that play an important role in the rural economy of the region. It is shown that the struggle to achieve sustainable agricultural development in challenging environments is a complex one, and can only be effectively achieved through combined efforts and commitment of individuals and institutions with complementary roles
