    This dataset was collected as part of the research “The expected benefits of the use of social robots when working with institutionalised older people” led by Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, RUG/UMCG (Health Psychology) and HKU University of Arts. The data contains transcripts of Focus Group Discussions of 24 Healthcare professionals, a tabular dataset of the transcripts, protocols of the sessions and a codebook. The aim of this study was to explore what healthcare professionals expect to be the added value of using a social robot in the daily care for older adults in a nursing home

    Innovation process for AI-enabled products and services (IPAPS)

    Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology and offers opportunities for developing innovative products and services. Traditionally, innovation process models are tools to support innovation. However, existing innovation process models are criticized for being generic, rigid, and resource-intensive, making them challenging for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to implement for developing AI-enabled products and services. To tackle these issues, we propose IPAPS, a novel innovation process model. To develop the IPAPS model, we employ the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM). Initially, we conducted a literature review to establish an ontology of the innovation process. Subsequently, the ontology is used to develop the IPAPS model. To evaluate the IPAPS model, we apply it to two real-world cases retrospectively. The evaluation of IPAPS has yielded positive results and points in the direction of a valid artefact. However, further research is required to rigorously validate and refine IPAPS.Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) face unique challenges in developing AI-enabled products and services, with traditional innovation processes proving too resource-intensive and poorly adapted to AI's complexities. Following design science research methodology, this paper introduces Innovation Process for AI-enabled Products and Services (IPAPS), a framework specifically designed for SMBs developing AI-enabled solutions. Built on a semi-formal ontology that synthesizes literature on innovation processes, technology development frameworks, and AI-specific challenges, IPAPS guides organizations through five structured phases from use case identification to market launch. The framework integrates established innovation principles with AI-specific requirements while emphasizing iterative development through agile, lean startup, and design thinking approaches. Through polar theoretical sampling, we conducted ex-post analysis of two contrasting cases. Analysis revealed that the successful case naturally aligned with IPAPS principles, while the unsuccessful case showed significant deviations, providing preliminary evidence supporting IPAPS as a potentially valid innovation process for resource-constrained organizations

    De huidige donkere wolken boven de Noordzee zijn onder andere de reden de huidige Noordzeeplannen nog eens goed tegen het financiële en uitvoeringstechnische licht te houden. “Idealiter samen met België en Duitsland, die immers een flink deel van de Nederlandse Noordzee energie zullen gaan afnemen en daarvoor hun fair share moeten gaan betalen. Doorgaan op de bestaande weg dreigt veel te traag te gaan en is ook veel te duur geworden. We eindigen dan wel met een power house, maar zonder industrie.

    Disentangling regional policy paradigms:Using eTools to understand and compare the impact of regional development policies in the European Union

    Regional development has often been described in economic terms, using economic indicators such as growth in GDP or demographic indicators such as net migration or employment. Some researchers argued that regional development should be understood broader, by including for example social indicators and living environment indicators . Recently, researchers have shown that policies directed towards regional development have broadened as well , but are also still evaluated within specific narratives or frameworks that often constitute the goals of the policy, for example the Keynesian framework favours increasing demand and favours the evaluation of policies aimed at exactly this. This self-constituting practice of an amalgam of related policies has also been referred to by Hall as a policy paradigm. Because policies are often evaluated within these policy paradigms it becomes difficult to decontextualise them, disentangle them and compare policies with each other.In this paper we propose to use a different, more quantitative and comparative method. By applying the above mentioned work from Andy Pike on numerous data sources from EUROSTAT and OECD, researchers from the PREMIUM_EU project developed a new framework that is measuring Regional Development (dubbed “R”) using economic, social and living environment indicators.MethodBy regarding this “R” (and individual indicators) as an outcome of public policies on the local, regional, national and international level and by analysing regional development policies on different levels from 2010 and onwards we believe it is possible to understand the impact of these policies in a more evidenced based sense, regardless of the above mentioned different types of narratives or frameworks.We started our research with an analysis from the OECD on the different types of regional development policies and the relations between different levels of government within countries. Based on this and literature research, we developed a framework with relevant topics for regional development policies and different levels of government.Based on the work of Moritz Schütz presented during the ERSA 2024 conference, we developed and employed a webcrawler to automatically download and summarise policies from municipalities, regional and national authorities and analyse the results of this exercise.Findings/resultsThe webcrawling and -mining exercise in combination with the new set of indicators will offer a much broader and more comprehensive view of the use and necessity of regional development policies. The findings will be discussed in dedicated policy labs with policymakers and researchers from the respective regions.Discussion/conclusionsBoth the new set of indicators and the analysis of the policies are not only innovative, but will also be viewed as speculative. Although we believe that a direct causal relationship between policies and the regional development will be hard to uncover, we do believe that this research will move the field of policy analysis forward, because it is more focused on evidence-based indicators and is based on larger sets of policies

    Gait parameters and daily physical activity for distinguishing pre-frail, frail, and non-frail older adults:A scoping review

    OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to gather current knowledge on accurately identifying and distinguishing between non-frail, pre-frail, and frail older adults using gait and daily physical activity (DPA) parameters and/or models that combine gait with DPA parameters in both controlled and daily life environments.METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across seven databases using key terms: "frail", "gait or walk", "IMU", and "age". Studies were included if they focused on gait analysis using Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) for walking distances greater than 10 meters. Extracted data included study design, gait and DPA outcomes, walking conditions, and classification model performance. Gait parameters were grouped into four domains: spatio-temporal, frequency, amplitude, and dynamic gait. DPA parameters were synthesized into three categories: postural and transition, variability, and physical activity pattern.RESULTS: A total of 15 cross-sectional studies involving 2,366 participants met the inclusion criteria. Gait analysis showed (pre)frail individuals had slower, shorter steps with longer stride times compared to non-frail individuals. Pre-frail individuals showed distinct gait patterns in periodicity, magnitude range, and variability. In daily activities, (pre)frail individuals displayed shorter, fragmented walking periods and longer transitions between positions. Walking variation identified pre-frail status, showing progressive decreases from non-frail to frail states. Combined gait and daily physical activity models achieved over 97% accuracy, sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing between groups.DISCUSSION: This review provides an updated synthesis of the relationship between various gait and/or DPA parameters and physical frailty, highlighting gaps in pre-frailty detection and the variability in measurement protocols. It underscores the potential of long-term, sensor-based monitoring of daily physical activity for advancing pre-frailty screening and guiding future clinical trials. Structured Abstract BACKGROUND: Changes in gait and physical activity are critical indicators of frailty. With advancements in wearable sensor technology, long-term gait analysis using acceleration data has become more feasible. However, the contribution of parameters beyond gait speed, such as gait dynamics and daily physical activity (DPA), in identifying frail and pre-frail individuals remains unclear.OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to gather knowledge on accurately identifying and differentiating physical pre-frail and frail individuals from non-frail individuals using gait parameters alone or models that combine gait and DPA parameters, both in controlled settings and daily life environments.METHODS: The review followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A search strategy incorporating key terms-"frail", "gait or walk", "IMU", and "age"-was applied across seven databases from inception to March 1, 2024. Studies were included if they focused on gait analysis in controlled or daily environments using Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) and involved walking distances longer than 10 meters. Data on walking conditions, gait outcomes, classification methods, and results were extracted. Gait parameters were categorized into four domains: spatio-temporal, frequency, amplitude, and dynamic gait. DPA parameters were synthesized into three categories: postural and transition, variability, physical activity pattern.RESULTS: A total of 15 cross-sectional observational studies met the eligibility criteria, covering 2,366 participants, with females representing 27%-80% of the sample and ages ranging from 60 to 92 years. Regarding gait parameters, (pre)frail individuals exhibited longer stride times, slower walking speeds, shorter steps, and reduced cadence compared to non-frail individuals. In three studies, pre-frail could be distinguished from the non-frail and frail group through gait periodicity, range of magnitude, and gait variability. DPA patterns differed between groups, with (pre)frail individuals showing shorter and more fragmented walking periods, brief walking bouts and longer postural transitions. Walking bout variation (CoV) effectively identified pre-frail status, decreasing 53.73% from non-frail to pre-frail, and another 30.87% from pre-frail to frail. Models combining both gait and DPA parameters achieved the highest accuracy (97.25%), sensitivity (98.25%), and specificity (98.25%) in distinguishing between groups.DISCUSSION: This scoping review provides an updated overview of the current knowledge and gaps in understanding the relationship between gait parameters across different domains and DPA parameters along with physical frailty. Significant variability in gait measurement methods and protocols complicates direct comparisons between studies. The review emphasizes the need for further research, particularly in pre-frailty screening, and underscores the potential of inertial sensor-based long-term monitoring of daily physical activity for future clinical trials.</p

    Physiotherapist-targeted strategies and tools for recognising patients with limited health literacy and adapting physiotherapeutic communication:A scoping review

    OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of available strategies and tools that support physiotherapists to recognise patients with LHL and to adapt the physiotherapeutic communication during the diagnostic phase.METHODS: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL and PsycINFO were searched for publications appearing between 2000 and June 2024. Additional grey literature was searched up till October 2022. Studies were included if they described strategies and tools aimed at supporting communication with patients with Limited Health Literacy in physiotherapy. Exclusion criteria focusing on general health literacy prevalence, behavioural interventions, or basic communication training.RESULTS: Out of the 9960 unique studies identified by our literature searches, 314 full-text studies were assessed and 98 met the inclusion criteria. The data on strategies and tools were extracted into the following six categories: verbal communication (n = 3), written communication (n = 34), digital device (n = 9), questionnaire (n=19), interpreter (n = 22), and other media (n = 2). Within these categories, tools and strategies were further classified based on the communication aims. Some tools and strategies were uncategorisable.CONCLUSION: While various strategies and tools exist for recognising patients with limited Health Literacy, they are often generic and not tailored to the physiotherapeutic context. This scoping review identifies a gab in physiotherapeutic approaches, particularly on those that go beyond information provision.PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: To improve communication in physiotherapy practice, there is a need for the development of tailored strategies and tools that reflect the specific dynamic of the physiotherapeutic process. We recommend engaging in design-based research that involves both patient and physiotherapist to co-create tools and strategies. In the meantime, physiotherapists are advised to use general communication strategies and tools and refer to our resources to select tools that best align with their specific goals.</p

    Object Classification Using 2D-LiDAR and YOLO for Robot Navigation

    Privacy concerns can potentially make camera-based object classification unsuitable for robot navigation. To address this problem, we propose a novel object classification system using only a 2D-LiDAR sensor on mobile robots. The proposed system enables semantic understanding of the environment by applying the YOLOv8n model to classify objects such as tables, chairs, cupboards, walls, and door frames using only data captured by a 2D-LiDAR sensor. The experimental results show that the resulting YOLOv8n model achieved an accuracy of 83.7% in real-time classification running on Raspberry Pi 5, despite having a lower accuracy when classifying door-frames and walls. This validates our proposed approach as a privacy-friendly alternative to camera-based methods and illustrates that it can run on small computers onboard mobile robots
