Synthesis of a dual-function monomer and its corresponding polymer for the valorisation of stilbenes from grape canes
A novel synthetic approach to 2,6-bis(acrylamido)pyridine (BAAPy) has been developed, producing a dual-function monomer able to self-crosslink while providing functional binding sites through its amide and pyridine groups. The monomer's structure and purity were confirmed through NMR, FTIR, and HPLC analyses. Poly(BAAPy) was subsequently synthesized and employed in the purification of stilbenes, including t-resveratrol, t-ε-viniferin, and t-piceatannol, all extracted from grape canes. These stilbenes, widely recognized for their antioxidant, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, are valuable phytochemicals. Grape canes, a by-product of grapevine pruning, serve as a natural and cost-effective source of these bioactive compounds. Using a single-step adsorption–desorption process with an ethanol–water solvent system, the method achieved a 13-fold enrichment of stilbenes with gravimetric purities over 37%. The dual functionality of BAAPy eliminates the need for external crosslinkers and enhances adsorption capacity
It Takes Two to Tango: A Dyadic Self-Determination Perspective on Need-Supportive Coaching
Acknowledging the knowledge gaps and novel paradigms outlined above within both coaching research and practice, the PhD research aims to investigate how need-supportive coaching—rooted in Self-Determination Theory (SDT)—effectively fulfils the satisfaction of beginning teachers’ basic psychological needs (BPNs) and autonomous motivation in pursuing their coaching goals within dyadic coaching relationships. To systematically explore this overarching objective, this PhD project and thesis adopt a structured, four-step approach, where each step investigates specific and complementary aspects of the coaching process. Collectively, these steps provide a comprehensive examination of how and under what conditions BPN-supportive coaching facilitates optimal motivational outcomes, enriching our understanding of the dynamic processes that shape coaching effectiveness among beginning teachers. Specifically, four research questions systematically guide the four research steps:1. What is the current state of empirical evidence linking BPN support, BPN satisfaction, and autonomous motivation within coach-coachee relationships?2. How do perceptual distances between coaches’ and coachees’ perceptions regarding BPN support relate to the coachees’ BPN satisfaction?3. How do coaches’ and coachees’ BPN satisfaction mutually predict autonomous motivation toward shared goals in their dyadic relationships?4. How do coaches and coachees dynamically co-regulate BPN interactions in real-time dyadic coaching conversations?Chapter 1 outlined a four-step empirical approach across Chapters 2 to 5 to understand BPN-supportive coaching. Chapter 2 meta-analysed the extant literature guided by a circular framework connecting BPN support, BPN satisfaction, and autonomous motivation for both parties. The results revealed that previous studies predominantly used individual-level data, neglecting the dynamic, reciprocal interactions in coaching. Chapter 3 investigated perceptual distance between coaches and coachees regarding BPN support using polynomial regression and response surface analysis. Results indicated that coachees reported greater BPN satisfaction when perceptions were closely aligned. Chapter 4 adopted the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model to examine how both parties’ BPN satisfaction is associated with their own and each other’s autonomous motivation. We found a positive unidirectional association between coachees’ relatedness satisfaction and coaches’ autonomous motivation and bidirectional associations for autonomy satisfaction. Chapter 5 employed State Space Grid analyses to capture the moment-to-moment co-regulation of autonomy in coach-coachee dyads. Results revealed recurrent patterns of predominant functional co-regulation (e.g., autonomy support met with proactive autonomy expression), and occasional dysfunctional co-regulation (e.g., evaluative feedback met with disengagement). Temporal evolvement in autonomy co-regulation was identified across coaching sessions in response to changing goals. Chapter 6 synthesised the contributions of the thesis. Collectively, BPN-supportive coaching can be viewed as a context-sensitive, interdependent, co-regulatory, and dynamic process, and we provided guidance for adaptive and relationally grounded coaching practices
Development and testing of a predictive model of symptoms for pain in community-dwelling frail older people in palliative care
Background: Pain assessment is a necessary step in pain management in older people in palliative care. In older people, pain assessment can be challenging due to underreporting and atypical pain manifestations by other distressing symptoms. Anxiety, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, insomnia, dyspnoea, and bowel problems correlate with pain in palliative care patients. Insight into these symptoms as predictors may help to identify the underlying presence of pain. This study aimed to develop and test a prediction model for pain in community-dwelling frail older people in palliative care. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, community-care nurses from multiple organizations across the Netherlands included eligible patients (life expectancy < 1 year, aged 65+, community-dwelling and frail). The outcome pain and symptoms were assessed by means of the Utrecht Symptom Diary. Also, demographic and illness information, including relevant covariates age, sex and living situation, was collected. Multivariable logistic regression and minimum Akaike Information Criterion(AIC) were used for model development and Receiver Operating Characteristics(ROC)-analysis for model performance. Additionally, predicted probability of pain are given for groups differing in age and sex. Results: A total of 157 patients were included. The final model consisted of insomnia(Odds Ratio[OR] = 2.13, 95% Confidence Interval[CI] = 1.01–1.30), fatigue(OR = 3.47, 95% CI = 1.11–1.43), sex(female)(OR = 3.83, 95% CI = 2.11–9.81) and age(OR=-1.59, 95% CI = 0.92–1.01) as predicting variables. There is an overall decreasing trend for age, older persons suffer less from pain and females have a higher probability of experiencing pain. Model performance was indicated as fair with a sensitivity of 0.74(95% CI = 0.64–0.83) and a positive predictive value of 0.80(95% CI = 0.70–0.88). Conclusions: Insomnia and fatigue are predicting symptoms for pain, especially in women and younger patients. Further testing of the model in external cohorts is needed before clinical adoption

ABSTRACTBackground: Families with a child with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities have to manage the pervasive support needs of their child, which is a complex task. By properly supporting them, we can ensure these families live a positive and meaningful life.Method: A product to support these families was developed using the method of Design Thinking, which included parents filling out three different questionnaires.Results: It was found that parents preferred to be supported in strengthening their resilience and care capacity, specifically by improving the communication and (mutual) understanding between them and municipal government employees. An online training course for government employees was subsequently developed.Conclusions: This study has led to the development of a product that can support families with a child with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities according to their needs and preferences.
