    Cultural Competence of Maternity Care Professionals Caring for Majority Population of Women with a Low Socioeconomic Position:A Scoping Review

    Background: Although maternity care is linked to improved health outcomes, it is often insufficiently tailored to the needs of low socioeconomic position (SEP) majority population women in high-income countries, leading to obstacles in achieving good health. Cultural competence can contribute to access to adequate care, but no systematic assessment has been conducted. This study aims to examine current evidence about the aspects of cultural competence of maternity care professionals caring for low socioeconomic position (SEP) majority population women. Methods: A scoping review was conducted. Search terms were based on the PCC elements (Participants, Concepts, and Context). Data-extraction and analysis were performed by two researchers according to a predetermined procedure. Data were grouped in the main themes of the Seeleman-framework (2009) and subsequently inductively analyzed. Results: Out of 6954 articles, 35 were eligible for data analysis. To create an overview of available evidence quality assessment of the included studies was not performed. Health professionals express a lack of knowledge and skills to assess socio-economic vulnerabilities in women and to refer to other care options regarding socio-economic vulnerabilities. Although positive experiences with professionals were mentioned, many women experience negative attitudes in terms of a lack of respect and stigmatization issues. Professionals lack the skills to build good relationships with women. Both women and health professionals reported poor communication and collaboration with health care colleagues and with social services. Conclusions: The cultural competence of health professionals in maternity care needs improvement. Professionals should be equipped with sufficient knowledge to identify deprived women and their needs and be trained in skills to effectively communicate and build care relationships. Future research should focus on the reflections of health professionals on their professional role regarding low SEP majority population women. The conditions and maternity care systems health professionals work in to serve low SEP majority women should be studied more closely. Results call for a debate about the scope of professional practice and logistical care structures regarding maternity care for low SEP majority population women.     Regulation of sulfur metabolism in seedlings of the C4 plant maize upon sulfate deprivation and atmospheric H2S exposure

    The increased cultivation of highly productive C4 crop plants may contribute to a second green revolution in agriculture. However, the regulation of mineral nutrition is rather poorly understood in C4 plants. To understand the impact of C4 photosynthesis on the regulation of sulfate uptake by the root and sulfate assimilation into cysteine at the whole plant level, seedlings of the monocot C4 plant maize (Zea mays) were exposed to a non-toxic level of 1.0 µl l−1 atmospheric H2S at sulfate-sufficient and sulfate-deprived conditions. Sulfate deprivation not only affected growth and the levels of sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds, but it also enhanced the expression and activity of the sulfate transporters in the root and the expression and activity of APS reductase (APR) in the root and shoot. H2S exposure alleviated the establishment of sulfur deprivation symptoms and seedlings switched, at least partly, from sulfate to H2S as sulfur source. Moreover, H2S exposure resulted in a downregulation of the expression and activity of APR in both shoot and root, though it hardly affected that of the sulfate transporters in the root. These results indicate that maize seedlings respond similarly to sulfate deprivation and atmospheric H2S exposure as C3 monocots, implying that C4 photosynthesis in maize is not associated with a distinct whole plant regulation of sulfate uptake and assimilation into cysteine

    Het belang van een integrale aanpak voor het verbeteren van binding en welzijn van studenten:inzichten uit het mbo, hbo en wo

    Sinds het uitbreken van de coronapandemie zijn er toenemende zorgen over het mentale welzijn van studenten. Ook de binding van studenten met hun medestudenten en docenten staat onder druk. Om sociale binding en welzijn onder studenten te verbeteren, heeft de overheid middels het Nationaal Programma Onderwijs (NPO) financiële middelen beschikbaar gesteld. Met deze middelen hebben mbo-, hbo- en wo-instellingen aanpakken ontwikkeld om binding en welzijn van studenten te bevorderen. Er is een grote variatie aan aanpakken ontwikkeld, waarvan de werking vaak nog onbekend is. Daarom wilden we in dit onderzoek achterhalen wat aanpakken, gefinancierd door NPO of anderszins, gericht op het vergroten van binding en welzijn succesvol maakt. Vervolgens wilden we werkzame elementen identificeren voor het vergroten van binding en welzijn. Om hier inzicht in te verkrijgen zijn focusgroepen georganiseerd met onderwijsprofessionals in het mbo, hbo en wo over de aanpakken die zij hebben geïmplementeerd om binding en welzijn van studenten te verhogen. Daarnaast zijn fishbowl-focusgroepen gehouden met studenten over wat in het onderwijs positieve of negatieve invloed heeft gehad op hun gevoelens van binding en welzijn. In de resultaten konden we zestien werkzame elementen onderscheiden die inzet vereisen op verschillende niveaus binnen onderwijsinstellingen. Door een integrale aanpak van binding en welzijn, met bijzondere aandacht voor de binding van studenten met hun docent en medestudenten, kunnen onderwijsinstellingen zo een positieve impact hebben op het welzijn van hun studenten

    Low-cost chronobiological monitoring: A tested IoT-enabled diagnostic tool in tropical and Antarctic environments

    Light intensity and spectral composition notably impact the human circadian rhythm. The human body is a physiological system that regulates its sleep-awake cycle through a constant rhythm of light and darkness. For a long time, the lighting research field has been concerned with understanding this circadian rhythm to improve people's quality of life. To better understand the influence of light on the human circadian rhythm, a remote monitoring device was developed that reliably measures the light spectrum and human circadian rhythm in different environments, including Antarctica and a tropical location study. The designed apparatus aims to facilitate the comprehension of the impact of light on the human circadian rhythm and provide accessible measurements through cost-effective tools. Results show that the developed monitoring prototype can collect and transmit environmental and human data. Therefore, the low-cost equipment developed can be reproduced and used by research institutions to collect data in different environments and improve the understanding of the influence of light on human activities. The cross-sectional analysis of the collected data revealed evidence of the significant influence of light on regulating the human circadian rhythm in tropical and Antarctica case studies. The collected information makes it possible to predict human reactions to the light environment, correlate these responses with seasonal periods, and comprehend how various forms of artificial and natural light interact with individuals and their living spaces. This prototype offers a non-invasive tool for assessing sleep quality and daytime activities, providing knowledge of how lighting conditions can impact overall well-being

    In this manuscript we present the results of a four-year monitor among a representative panel of Dutch citizens on the knowledge, awareness and opinions regarding hydrogen. Hydrogen has the potential to play an important role in the energy transition and therefore receives a growing attention. At the start we wanted to know how the Dutch population felt upon hydrogen and its applications. By knowing how the Dutch feel about hydrogen, we could design campaigns to inform the public better and make these campaigns more tailored on the questions or worries the public has regarding hydrogen.     Dit deskonderzoek gaat in op de kansen die inwoners van de dorpen en buurtschappen rondom de Eemshaven en de haven van Delfzijl zien voor behoud en verbeteringen van de leefbaarheid van hun dorp of wijk. Hierbij is voor zo ver mogelijk geput uit beschikbare dorpsvisies, omdat daaruit vooral blijkt wat dorpsinwoners belangrijk vinden als het gaat om de toekomstige leefbaarheid van hun dorp. Echter, niet ieder dorp beschikt over een dorpsvisie en ook een aantal worden nog geactualiseerd. Er is ook gebruikgemaakt van (dorps)websites en andere relevante rapporten die voor de bredere regio interessant zijn.<br/
