Adaptive storytelling based on personality and preference modeling

    No full text
In almost all forms of storytelling, the background and the current state of mind of the audience members predispose them to experience a given story from a uniquely personal perspective. However, traditional story writers usually construct their narratives based on the average preferences of their audience, which does not guarantee satisfying narrative experiences for its members. When a narrative aims at providing pleasurable entertainment, having some information about the preferences of the current user for the narrative's content is vital to create satisfying experiences. This paper explores personality modeling and proposes a novel approach to generate individualized interactive narratives based on the preferences of users, which we model in terms of the Big Five factors. This paper presents and evaluates the proposed method in a web-based interactive storytelling system that explores the Little Red Riding Hood folktale. The results show that the proposed method is capable of correctly recognizing the preferences of users for story events (average accuracy of 91.9%) and positively improve user satisfaction and experience

An IoT-based healthcare ecosystem for home intelligent assistant services in smart homes

    No full text
Home Intelligent Assistants (HIAs) typically integrate several types of healthcare and well-being solutions that include mobile applications, sensors or wearables. These solutions are usually connected to the HIA through the Internet designing an Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. This paper presents an IoT healthcare ecosystem for smart home environments that considers both indoor and outdoor scenarios. The main goal is to monitor in a pervasive way habitant vital signs, such as heart rate, temperature, and respiration, while sleeping or any other indoor and outdoor activity. A breast sensor band and smartwatch were used as wearable sensors of the ecosystem. Furthermore, smartphones and tablets were used has interfaces of the HIA. The service-oriented architecture that integrates all the IoT solutions was constructed and a secure authentication model was implemented to maintain health data privacy. This framework’s main goal is to allow the integration of other IoT-based solutions regardless of its hardware or software. The proposed ecosystem and integrated solutions were validated both in terms of features and communication through a series of experiments on real devices through a Wi-Fi network

    No full text
The evolution of technologies stimulates the e-commerce market. Recently, augmented reality has been creating significant value in the retail sector. This study aims to analyse an application, IKEA Place, which allows consumers to shop online using augmented reality technology without the need for a marker to identify the surface (Markerless Augmented Reality). The model to evaluate this study was based on the constructs of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and other models. The sustainability of the study is exploratory and involves identifying whether this application aims to create more confidence and convenience in the acquisition of a product through the support of this technology. The study was carried out in the North of Portugal, obtaining a convenience sampling in the Porto and Braga regions. The results concluded that there are no significant differences based on sociodemographic data, the operating system used, familiarity with the organization related to the intended use. In contrast, technology changes have been found to offer consumers more confidence and convenience of purchase. Significant results were also obtained in terms of user experience, the preference of this application to make online purchases over existing channels, the future use of such technologies by users to purchase a product and the attraction of purchase regarding perceived ease of use of the application under analysis

Websites as spaces of confluence: Narratives and the pursuit of legitimacy

    No full text
Narratives are important means through which entrepreneurs can present rationales for their activities and influence assessments of their company’s plausibility. The purpose of this research is to understand how can websites be engaged in the construction of entrepreneurial marketing narratives. To this end, we have followed a company operating in the fashion industry for over a year. As the initial fieldwork evolved, websites emerged as critical in the articulation of the company’s narrative. Consequently, this research was driven by the goal to develop an understanding on how websites can be employed in the construction of narratives. The results allowed developing two main contributions. First, we suggest that websites can gain a central role in the construction and dissemination of narratives, enabling to make them tangible and persistent over time. Narratives in websites can become reference points for companies, influencing internal stakeholders and feeding further accounts. Second, we identify and explore five qualities of narratives in websites that influence how these narratives can be constructed and disseminated: (1) tangibility; (2) persistence; (3) ubiquity; (4) multimodality; and (5) hyper-intertextuality

Comparing psychopathological symptoms in Portuguese football fans and non-fans

    No full text
The present study aims to characterize football fans and non-fans and to compare their psychopathological symptoms with the latest normative values for the Portuguese population from Canavarro in 2007. Results showed that football fans and non-fans are mostly male, have an affective relationship, are childless, have secondary education or a high degree, and are employed or students; fans are more likely to be male, dating, unemployed, to have elementary education and be younger than non-fans. Football fans present significantly higher psychopathological symptoms than non-fans in somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, hostility, paranoid ideation and psychoticism and all psychopathological indexes. Football fans present values very close to those of populations with emotional distress in hostility and are above the mean of the general population in obsession–compulsion, hostility, paranoid ideation and psychoticism

Temporal Layers in Heritage Tourism: Christianity and Islam in an Algarvian Chapel

    No full text
The worldwide expansion of cultural and heritage tourism presents several opportunities for destination development, but also poses significant challenges in terms of management. This is especially true when different, overlapping, and potentially conflicting meanings coexist in the same location, as when distinct layers of the history of a site are unearthed by archaeology. Considering faith as confidence in the perpetuation of identities, an element common to both heritage and religion, this paper presents the results of a study of the heritagization process of a Christian chapel in Loulé (Algarve, Portugal), where traces of the city’s Islamic past were uncovered, and of the strategies implemented considering the site’s overlapping meanings. The results indicate that the embracement, rather than the suppression, of dissonant layers of significance in the heritagization of a religious site can contribute to a community’s richer sense of its enduring memory through a new dialogue with its multifaceted past and the validation of previously disregarded traces of its identity

Directions towards sustainability through higher education

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to contribute to associating higher education in design towards meeting the challenge of global sustainability [1]. Ideas from several models and from within several disciplines as design are integrated to construct a framework through the challenges can be examined and then transacted into learning outcomes, expressed as graduate attributes. The focus of design education for global sustainability has been on encouraging consumers to modify patterns of resource consumption and waste management. To actualize this potential requires that higher education curricula in design offer experiences, which develop graduate attributes of self-efficacy, capacity for effective advocacy and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as raise awareness of social and moral responsibilities associated with professional design practice It is important to consider the practicality of developing programs of study, which can prepare graduates with the necessary knowledge and values. Higher education in design must develop the capacity in graduates to prioritize actions after balancing all the social, environmental and economic costs and benefits [2]. So, the curriculum in design should include experiences, which lead to a greater awareness of social and moral responsibilities. Especially, in a larger self-awareness of personal value systems and a willingness to revise them is required to prepare design graduates for work towards sustainability

    No full text
This paper discusses tourism innovation developed by hosts of sharing accommodation, based on the outcomes of guests’ value co-creation. In this process, relationship marketing is a central aspect of peer-to-peer business models, analysed as a catalyst of innovation. The authors conducted thirty in-depth interviews with Portuguese hosts of Airbnb accommodations in order to understand the integration of guests’ value co-creation through relational mechanisms in the innovation of their businesses. The results evidence that it is established a close relationship marketing with guests during their stay. This fact is considered critical for the co-creation of the tourism experience and to increment innovation in the accommodation services. The main innovation outcomes are incremental and connected to the provided facilities, amenities and partnerships with other businesses. This happens not only through the user generated contents of online reviews, but also with the constant interpersonal contact established between guests and hosts
