Integration of educational technology during the Covid-19 pandemic: An analysis of teacher and student receptions

    No full text
This study analyzes the integration of an educational technology platform and relates the difficulties faced amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially, we sought to identify the chief barriers educators face when considering the adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Factors influencing primary and secondary education teachers’ (n = 15) and students’ (n = 335) perspectives on ICT integration for mathematics instruction were identified and analyzed from the perspective of different contexts (school vs home) and circumstances (in-person vs remote learning). Although we acknowledge the need for immediate decisions by educational stakeholders to facilitate online learning, our findings indicate the necessity of (a) careful examination of the features of potential platforms or tools and (b) a trial of such features prior to integration within an educational system. From an instructional design perspective, educational technologists should pay special attention to the degree of gamification, especially beyond the primary school level, as it may negatively impact incentives for student interaction and engagement. Where possible, the integration of technology should be driven by pedagogical goals and not technological pressures

Cork as a relevant material in fashion: A study of socio-cultural trends and a semiotic reading of the cork-a-tex yarn

    No full text
The main objective of this research is to understand the symbolic and cultural readings that the Cork-a-Tex yarn can have as a new fashion design textile. The methodology is divided into two parts: literary review and analysis. The literary review contextualizes the main themes of this paper and the analysis approaches both semiotic and trend methods, framing the case study as a ‘cool signal’ of socio-cultural trends. Both analyses contribute to a cultural reading of meanings behind the case study and promote a better perception of contexts and mindsets. Through this combination of methods, we understand the framework of meanings imprinted on the object. Understanding its cool nature and association with trends reinforces the need for developments of new materials from cork and stimulates research on socio-cultural trends

Consumer marketing strategy and e-commerce in the last decade: A literature review

    No full text
E-commerce is deemed as the sale and purchase of goods and services through the internet in exchange for money and data transfer to complete the transactions. E-commerce is at the forefront of transforming marketing strategies, based on new technologies, and facilitates product information and improved decision-making. In this way, marketing strategy increasingly require large amounts of information to better understand client needs, which raises the question of choosing the right marketing strategy to better fit consumer expectations. This literature review aims to shed light on both the recent growth of e-commerce literature and its interplay with consumer marketing strategy. Extant research has examined this change in human interaction due to social network building, mostly through the themes of online marketing and social media marketing, also comprehending issues such as cost efficiency, information quality and trust development towards online shopping. Nevertheless, existing research has not shown in full all the research streams, how they interact with each other and its potential knowledge development. Thus, a literature review on consumer marketing strategy for e-commerce in the last decade is opportune. This paper aims to identify research trends in the field through a Systematic Bibliometric Literature Review (LRSB) of research on marketing strategy for e-commerce. The review includes 66 articles published in the Scopus® database, presenting up-to-date knowledge on the topic. The LRSB results were synthesized across current research subthemes. The following findings are presented: Amidst the current competitive global business environment, companies tend to respond with strategies for e-commerce and online businesses that resort to e-commerce platforms and social networking to better understand consumer needs, facilitate consumer marketing strategy and share innovative information. The originality of the paper relies on its LRSB method, together with extant review of articles that have not been categorized so far

Return on Investment of display Advertising: Google Ads vs. Facebook Ads

    No full text
This research compares the effectiveness of display advertising using Google Ads and Facebook Ads, regarding the outcomes both in digital interaction and conversion metrics. The business manager's perception of profitability is also studied and compared with digital analytics. The authors selected the case of a specific company and researched the attraction of consumer attention of display advertising using both tools in two different markets – Portuguese and Argentinean. The authors conducted digital analytics of the outcomes of advertising campaigns and analyzed an interview with the manager of the studied company. Findings illustrate that Facebook Ads is the most profitable platform for the company, and Argentina is the market that generates higher return in this tool, comparing with the Portuguese market. However, both platforms complement each other in different conversion metrics. Manager's perceptions may not be aligned with the evidences of digital analytics, leading to incorrect decisions

Attitudes of food consumers at universities towards recycling human urine as crop fertiliser: A multinational survey dataset

    No full text
We present here a data set generated from a multinational survey on opinions of university community members on the prospect of consuming food grown with human urine as fertiliser and about their urine recycling perceptions in general. The data set comprises answers from 3,763 university community members (students, faculty/researchers, and staff) from 20 universities in 16 countries and includes demographic variables (age bracket, gender, type of settlement of origin, academic discipline, and role in the university). Questions were designed based on Ajzen's theory of planned behaviour to elicit information about three components of behavioural intention—attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control. Survey questions covered perceived risks and benefits (attitudes), perceptions of colleagues (injunctive social norm) and willingness to consume food grown with cow urine/faeces (descriptive social norm), and willingness to pay a price premium for food grown with human urine as fertiliser (perceived behavioural control). We also included a question about acceptable urine recycling and disposal options and assessed general environmental outlook via the 15-item revised New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale. Data were collected through a standardised survey instrument translated into the relevant languages and then administered via an online form. Invitations to the survey were sent by email to university mailing lists or to a systematic sample of the university directory. Only a few studies on attitudes towards using human urine as fertiliser have been conducted previously. The data described here, which we analysed in “Willingness among food consumers at universities to recycle human urine as crop fertiliser: Evidence from a multinational survey” [1], may be used to further understand potential barriers to acceptance of new sanitation systems based on wastewater source separation and urine recycling and can help inform the design of future sociological studies

    Portugal

Portugal is highly dependent on tourism and the country has established a strong organization, Tourism of Portugal (Turismo de Portugal), to manage this industry. Tourism of Portugal has the role of promoting Portugal in international markets. Nonetheless there is no single structure that manages the Portugal brand for tourism as well as for other industries in an all-inclusive way. Moreover, there has been no discussion with society at large as to what Portugal should represent and the direction it should take. Without a structure in place to manage the Portugal brand, and little discussion or involvement of different stakeholders, it is difficult to say that Portugal has a nation brand strategy

The relevance of food for the development of a destination brand

    No full text
A positive destination brand image depends on a number of factors. Food consumption is one of these. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate and clarify the relevance of food for destination brand management. To do so, this investigation employs a qualitative method of research: exploratory research. Using the Algarve (Portugal) as the empirical destination brand, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 58 participants from the UK. This article concludes that consumers use both local cuisine and its availability (through restaurants) to define and evaluate a destination, and that both influence that destination’s brand image. These two variables are part of the dimension called food, which fulfils both a physiological and a social need, since eating can be considered a pleasurable social activity. Therefore, food is a destination brand dimension that should be taken into account when developing a brand strategy. Destination brand managers should act on this dimension to communicate brand values by management licensing and implementing educational programs and systems of quality control to improve the supply side

"I Still Love Them and Wear Them" - Conflict Occurrence and Management in Wearer-Clothing Relationships

    No full text
The reasons why people use their clothes for longer are complex, but essential to understand how to promote longer clothing lifetimes. We conducted an online survey with open-ended questions, asking 170 female participants to write about one of their oldest garments still in use. When analysing our qualitative data, we found that many participants reported going through some mishaps with their item, a situation which is identified in existing literature as a reason for garment disposal. Following ongoing research which compares wearer-clothing relationships with human relationships, we analysed our qualitative data in the light of theory on interpersonal relationships to understand why conflict did not lead participants to dispose of their garments. The findings suggest that the way people manage conflict with their clothes is more critical for garment longevity than the conflict per se, which is bound to happen at some point in time. This paper presents different approaches to conflict in wearer-clothing relationships and illustrates them with testimonies from our survey. We discuss our findings through relevant literature and their implications to specific strategies for garment longevity
