Types of affiliation in the hotel sector–an insight into the Portuguese experience

    No full text
This study analyses the types of affiliation in the hotel sector and identifies the factors that affect the choice of affiliation. Accordingly, this study’s objectives are: i) to analyse managers’ perceptions regarding the most appropriate type of affiliation; and ii) to uncover the factors that influence the type of affiliation they choose. Data was collected through a questionnaire. Findings show that management contracts and marketing consortia are adequate affiliation types for four-and five-star hotels. The terms of the contract, followed by the chain’s affiliation strategy, were the most important factors that most influence this choice. Limitations, theoretical and managerial contributions are presented in the end

The highly sensitive person (HSP) and online shopping behavior: The impact of visual stimuli on attitude towards the ad and purchase intention

    No full text
In the digital world, consumers are constantly being exposed to an overwhelming number of visual stimuli. Online advertisements are the big new showroom for brands – all are striving for attention and attract the right customer. Generally, advertisements combine vivid colors and strong movements to encourage and capture the consumer attention, but is this always the right strategy? Literature shows that people could react differently to similar stimuli, depending on their personality traits – specifically, the visual stimuli embedded in online ads are not an exception. Thus, brands could eventually be repelling (rather than enticing) potential customers by using vivid colors, high dynamism, and information overload. The aim of this research is to assess how people with a higher sensitivity to external stimuli, commonly defined as Highly Sensitive Persons (HSPs, Aron and Aron 1997) react when exposed to ads with excessive visual stimuli (i.e., vivid colors, dynamic imagery, complex layouts). Additionally, participants’ biometric responses (heart rate variability and time-response), attitude towards the ad, and purchase intention will be measured. A quantitative methodology will be used, involving an experimental design and lab data collection. Theoretical implications are discussed, and hypotheses are presented

Integrated risk monitoring in the quality management system

    No full text
Context: The digital transformation has led to higher market competitiveness, allowing organisations to have competitive advantages over prominent installed players. However, it led to a greater exposure of organisations to new threats, which reinforces the need for integrated monitoring of risk. This approach has particular significance when the Quality Management System (QMS) implementation of the ISO 9001:2015 standard requires integrating Risk Management (RM) into the organisation’s business processes. This article explores and analyses how this approach is rooted in the Portuguese business fabric. The paper presents the Model of the Integrated Risk Monitoring (MMIR), a model developed according to ISO 31000 standard of RM, having an alert mechanism in the face of risk situations in organisations. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted on a descriptive and content analysis of scientific articles published from the B-on database (www.b-on.pt ). An online survey, based on questionnaires, was implemented to get insights into the organisation’s perception of risk. The questionnaire was sent, by email, to 3599 organisations certified in Portugal under the ISO 9001:2015 standard. Results: The response rate of the online survey (6.4%) allowed to emphasise the importance of the organisation implementing a formal RM process and applying risk techniques to QMS (ISO 9001:2015). The idea of using the RM model should not be limited to specific departments or business sectors. MMIR provides an agnostic approach to the market activity in which the organisation operates, integrating the RM process with different RM techniques (strategic and operational) and considering a set of reference Key Risk Indicators (KRI) for QMS. This document helps remind organisations to use integrated risk monitoring processes in business planning and operations

Now I can see: How brand interactions influence channel loyalty and purchase intention in optical physical stores

    No full text
Purpose: This study aims to analyse the effect of brand interactions such as personal interaction, problem-solving, reliability and store physical appearance on channel loyalty and purchase intention in optical physical stores. Design/methodology/approach: The hypotheses are tested through quantitative research based on a questionnaire with a sample of 414 respondents. Researchers conduct multiple regressions to analyse the data. Findings: The findings reveal that channel loyalty and purchase intention are positively influenced differently. Person-to-person interactions play a vital role in both constructs (dependent variables). This study also offers relevant managerial implications and future research avenues. Originality/value: Despite the relevance of purchase intention in the literature, almost no studies have been published about the intention to buy glasses in the optical physical stores, a relevant contribution this paper offers to the literature. The finding that the store’s physical aspect did not prove to be influential for channel loyalty is also an innovative and relevant contribution of this research

The Poetics of sensational forms: Azorean art, religion, and popular culture

    No full text
This article seeks to analyze the drift of elements of Azorean popular religion into the domain of art orchestrated by two Azorean artists, Catarina Branco and Sofia de Medeiros. The change brings unlikely marriages into fruition, uniting the humor of pop art and the solemnity of the arches of the high choir in a church, the spirit of revelry and a sign of the cross, representing the unfathomable-death, the dread of emptiness to the feeling of unity in communitas. The presentation, together with the strangeness of decontextualization provoked by this change, invoke the walk of the visitor, during which different senses are awakened, in which the poetic imagination of the observer is called forth to complete the different meanings. In this thesis I shall argue that the elements of popular religiosity carried by these artists into the domain of art constitute sensory arrangements, in the sense given to this term by Meyer, providing structure to a collective religious experience particular to Azorean culture where the sacred intertwines with the profane. The mediation of the transcendent through these sensory arrangements leads, on one hand, to contamination and reciprocal intensification of the spheres of art and religion and, on the other hand, to a renewed look at the contemporaneous and its connection to the spiritual

    Memorable experiences in language travel

    No full text
Language tourism is an important component of the global tourism market with an estimated two million travelers annually. Language travelers are a potentially lucrative segment of the travel market for tourism destinations; therefore, understanding their unique characteristics and behaviours is important. This study employs qualitative methods to explore the memorable experiences associated with language travel. Participants' most memorable experiences were associated with social interactions, cultural interactions, conquering language skills, and finding themselves in risky or challenging situations. This study addresses a gap in the literature as it relates to understanding the memorable experiences of language travellers. The findings may be of value to destinations and businesses who seek to attract language travellers

    Sustainable entrepreneurship: A literature review

    No full text
These days, issues such as environmental degradation, the wealth gap, and unequal access to opportunities and resources are increasing. These concerns have increased the need for sustainable entrepreneurship, defined as sustainable business practices. Entrepreneurship is central in transi-tioning towards a more sustainable future, whereas aligning the social, economic, and ecological objectives and ecological entrepreneurs plays a role. This scoping literature review analyzes the field of sustainable entrepreneurship and the extent of the holistic integration in the global business arena, therefore filling a gap in the existing literature. It aims to analyze the depth of existing pieces of literature on sustainable entrepreneurship, its definitions, and its applications in business practices. The analysis relies upon a literature search on the SCOPUS database around the keywords ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Sustainable Entrepreneurship’. The scientific software VOSviewer is used to better illustrate the linkage of major categories and correspondent trends, related with both business growth and maintenance of ecological systems. It concludes that the desired levels of sustainability require col-laborations between all stakeholders, while the transition towards service-oriented business models has contributed to the growth of sustainable entrepreneurship. Nevertheless, existing institutional structures favor current unsustainable businesses and systems over the newer sustainable ones, demanding ecopreneurs to initiate institutional changes

Developmental assets and positive youth development: An examination of gender differences in Spain

    No full text
Positive Youth Development (PYD) model is a strength-based perspective of transition to adulthood derived from developmental systems theory. Developmental assets (DAs) framework describes the individual and contextual resources that may promote PYD. This work aims to analyze the associations between internal and external DAs and PYD, as well as examining gender differences, in Spanish youth. Data of students enrolled in 10 high schools and universities, collected in the PYD Cross-National Project in Spain through a selfreport instrument, were used. Structural equation modeling showed that DAs were positively related to PYD. Some gender differences were observed in PYD, such that male students presented higher scores in confidence and competence, and female students showed more connection, caring, and character. Results of partial mediation modeling indicated that these gender differences in PYD may be partly explained by gender differences in DAs

Image philosophy for reading glitch art

    No full text
This paper investigates to what extent it is possible to establish an image philosophy to read digital images, in this specific case, applying the concepts in the areas of glitch art. Through a narrative literature review, we sought general definitions regarding the terms of the image and developed a possible approach for reading digital images that have intrusive aesthetic data from the operation of technical apparatus. The study takes place as a theoretical reflection that does not aim to “solve” all the questions about reading images, but it can bring up the possibility of interpreting the images that inhabit the digital universe
