The role of sexuality in tourism businesses from the perspective of women managers
This study investigates to what extent women managers in tourism perceive sexuality to play a role in the tourism sector, with a focus not only on their perceptions but also on their experiences. Twenty-four women in high level management were interviewed. Almost a third of the research participants experienced sexual advances at work. Despite not feeling threatened by such advances, they considered these advances as unpleasant. Practically all women had developed coping strategies to avoid such advances, and some underlined the importance of carefully managing such situations so as not to offend
Stick or twist—The rise of blockchain applications in marketing management
The adoption of blockchain technology by companies can change the way they interact with stakeholders, redefining communication strategies and other marketing processes. In this study, we investigated the relevance of blockchain applications for marketing management from the perspective of marketing-related professionals. Answers about blockchain technology application in the marketing arena were collected from the social platform Quora. The data were analyzed through text mining and Spearman’s correlation coefficient to assess the degree of association, inherent intensity, and the association significance between the variables payments, supply chain, loyalty programs, digital marketing, credential management, and marketing management, using Quora-specific metrics, namely, upvotes, shares, and views. The results posit blockchain technology as being an asset for marketing, with greater relevance in supply chain and internal management among marketing operations. Professionals will be able to potentially improve internal management systems and marketing campaigns, which will enhance companies’ competitive advantage
The Relationship Between EFQM Recognition System and Management Maturity
The EFQM recognition system is an acknowledged method of assessing business excellence understood as the degree of implementation of quality management in an organization. The paper aims to examine whether a high rating under the EFQM recognition system simultaneously means a high general management maturity level. The investigation covers the 35 organizations that won EFQM awards in Portugal. The study is based on points awarded to organizations under the EFQM recognition system and on questionnaires/interviews with managers responsible for quality management in the studied organizations. The results indicate a positive and robust correlation between the quality management implementation (rating under the EFQM recognition system) and general management maturity. The study helps to close the gap in the literature regarding the relationship between quality management and management maturity in an organization
Industry 4.0 and marketing: Towards an integrated future research agenda
Industry 4.0, or the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is driven by innovative technologies that have profound effects on both production systems and business models. This revolution is characterized by the addition of disruptive technologies and methods. These aspects of Industry 4.0 have a significant impact on marketing, and have led to an evolution to ensure that marketing activities align with technological advancements and address consumers’ current needs. The purpose of this paper is to formulate and discuss future research avenues for marketing considering the changes brought about by Industry 4.0. The approach taken in the paper is to review the relevant literature and focus on the key themes which are most important for future research on Industry 4.0 and marketing. Therefore, a Systematic Bibliometric Literature Review was conducted based on the SCOPUS indexing online database of scientific articles, the most important peer-reviewed journal database in the academic world. The paper finds that there are a number of research avenues for marketing researchers to conduct investigations in, but the most important areas are five marketing principles in Industry 4.0: cooperation, conversation, co-creation, cognitivity, and connectivity. Future research should focus on the quantitative study of these five principles
Systematic mapping of methods used to evaluate the usability and UX of learning management systems
LMS (Learning Management System) platforms have become relevant in the last two decades and their adoption by educational institutions around the world increased considerably, which shows the importance of developing systems with proper usability and user experience (UX). In the context of the current pandemic, in which long distance education is no longer a matter of choice, but a necessity, having LMS that meet usability standards becomes even more important. These platforms should contribute to an efficient and effective learning process. Identifying the main usability problems found in existing LMS is a key step towards improving the experience they provide to their users. This paper presents a Systematic Mapping (SM) of the existing literature on the subject, which identifies the most common approaches followed over the last decade (2010–2020) to evaluate the usability and UX in LMS. Close to 80 publications were analyzed, and our preliminary results show that the vast majority of them follow approaches that are either based exclusively on Jakob Nielsen’s heuristics or use them in combination with other methods. While there are reasons to believe Nielsen’s heuristics provide a robust approach for usability, their overwhelming use raises the question of whether there are alternative methods (including the ones that resort to automation) to guarantee that LMS and other digital products meet usability standards
The impact of digital technologies on marketing and communication in the tourism industry
The growing openness between regions accompanied by the rising of the tourism industry enhances its importance and the ensuing search for competitive advantages in terms of communication, marketing, and technology. It, therefore, gave rise to the concept of integrated marketing communication (IMC) that together with information and communication technology (ICT) could highlight tourist experiences. This literature review (LR) attempts to unveil how digital technologies determine marketing and communication in the tourism industry and, conversely, what industry areas should be targeted by those digital technologies. The study employs a scoping review approach based on a search of literature through the SCOPUS database. Ten articles were selected. On the one hand, this LR concludes that digital technologies are filling the gap concerning the needs of tourists through, for instance, mobile marketing. On the other hand, it discloses that digital technologies are essential for the tourism industry as it improves marketing communication by diverse means
No place for pointless jobs: How social responsibility impacts job performance
We address the question of how organizations’ practices of social responsibility impact their employees’ job performance. Independent studies have shown that job performance is influenced by how employees perceive the organization they work for and how they perceive the work they perform for the organization. Moreover, studies on the relationship between social responsibility and job performance have shown that employees’ perceptions of their organization mediate the relationship. What is thus far neglected, however, is whether and how their perceptions of work itself mediate the relationship as well. We derive a sequential mediation model according to which social responsibility improves job performance by contributing to a supportive and trustworthy work context (employees’ perceptions of the organization they work for), in turn promoting work meaningfulness and engagement (employees’ perceptions of work itself). We collect survey data and test the sequential mediation model against a series of alternative models, each of which challenges a specific assumption of the proposed model. Our model provides the best tradeoff between the accuracy and the parsimony with which it describes the data collected, and is, therefore, expected to generalize best to other data
Cybersecurity in the Internet of Things in Industrial Management
Nowadays, people live amidst the smart home domain, while there are business opportunities in industrial smart cities and healthcare. However, there are concerns about security. Security is central for IoT systems to protect sensitive data and infrastructure, whilst security issues have become increasingly expensive, in particular in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) domains. Nonetheless, there are some key challenges for dealing with those security issues in IoT domains: Applications operate in distributed environments such as Blockchain, varied smart objects are used, and sensors are limited, as far as machine resources are concerned. In this way, traditional security does not fit in IoT systems. The issue of cybersecurity has become paramount to the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in mitigating cybersecurity risk for organizations and end users. New cybersecurity technologies/applications present improvements for IoT security management. Nevertheless, there is a gap in the effectiveness of IoT cyber risk solutions. This review article discusses the literature trends around opportunities and threats in cybersecurity for IIoT, by reviewing 70 key articles discovered from a profound Scopus literature survey. It aims to present the current debate around the issue of IIoT rather than suggesting any particular technical solutions to solve network security problems
A semiotic and usability analysis of diegetic UI: Metro—Last Light
A Game’s narrative is perhaps one of the key components of creating player immersion. As technology advances, game developers increase their toolset for creating increasingly complex game worlds. The UI has a crucial role, providing the player with feedback about the various attributes and mechanics within the game. Some games sought to integrate the traditionally intrusive UI within the game’s narrative and art, by the means of Diegetic UI. The goal of this research paper is to understand how integrating the User Interface into the game’s art and narrative—creating what is called a Diegetic Interface—can increase the feeling of immersion for the player. To identify the processes through which meaning is observed in Diegetic UI, we’ve relied on the Discoursive Semiotics proposed by A. J. Greimas and to assess if these Diegetic Representations affect Usability, we employed Game Usability Heuristics proposed by Desurvire and Wiberg. The methodology proved to yield interesting results regarding the relationships between UI and Narrative as well as the Usability impact derived from such implementation in the game Metro: Last Light
