History Education and Public History – Introduction
The articles in this section of International Public History prove that the issues arising from a dialogue between public history and history education[1] need to go far beyond the cooperation between school teachers and museum educators, are much more complicated and multifaceted, and that both dialogue and critical reflection remain a postulate rather than reality. The examples from three countries: the United States, Greece, and Poland (with Germany), leave no doubt that the interactions between public history and history education do happen whether we want it or not, but they do not necessarily take the forms that we as academics involved in international exchange would desire. My hope would be not to associate public history in history education with politician’s dictating what should be taught in school history lessons and how it should be taught. In the ideal world, history education could use the methods and strategies of public history in gaining the public’s attention and engagement in order to better educate more open, critical and understanding publics for future public history projects. Still there is a long way to go. Sometimes there are steps forward (see the academic literature in history didactics or the Polish-German textbooks) but sometimes backward (see the populist demands of the protectors of traditional national narratives)
Memoryscapes: The Evolution of Sri Lanka’s Aragala Bhoomiya as a People’s Space of Protest
The ‘aragalaya’ or the ‘people’s struggle’ was perhaps one of the most important and successful movements of Sri Lanka’s long history of democracy. In 2015, democracy prevailed, unexpectedly and against all odds, when Sri Lankans, unsatisfied with their political representation, ‘voted out’ a government. In 2022, just as unexpectedly and for the first time in its history, the people of Sri Lanka ousted a government through mass protest and uprising. The protesters, cutting across socio-economic class and arguably many other barriers, came together and marched to Colombo’s Galle Face Green, in parallel to each other and to each other’s goals. This time, they came to do more than simply oust a government but for an idea of justice, equity, democracy, and system change. This article explores the memories and perspectives of those who ‘lived’ on the protest site and the relationship between memory, place, and the social construction of space, as they reconvened for a memory-mapping exercise in co-creating public histories of the aragalaya (struggle) and the aragala bhoomiya (site of struggle)
Spatial Histories: Geography, Memory, and Alternative Narratives of the Iranian Revolution of 1979
In distinction from the overwhelming tendency to conceive history primarily in terms of its temporal chronologies, this paper considers the spatiality of history and historical memory. Engaging with seven Oral History interviews with diasporic Iranians in Toronto on the Iranian Revolution of 1979, we show that narratives of historical events are deeply shaped by the geographical location of narrators: those emplaced in differing geographical locations at the time of the Revolution not only remember disparate events, but also associate distinct temporal points with the Revolution. For instance, while those remembering the Revolution from the capital city of Tehran produce narratives that closely align with the official historiography of the Revolution (such as in recounting street protests and the culmination of the Revolution on February 11th, 1979), others remember events and dates that are only peripheral to official accounts (such as the arson at Cinema Rex on August 19th, 1978, or the hostage crisis that lasted from November 4th, 1979 to January 28th, 1980). In other words, both the content of memories (what narrators remember) and their temporal associations (which dates narrators recall) are informed by the embodied geography of memories. Hence, those whose geographical locations diverge from the largely capital-focused vantage point of official histographies produce narratives that diverge from these accounts. In short, geography and embodied emplacement are central to historical narrative, whether authoritative or narrated form geographical margins

Author of masterpieces that denounce the contemporary (from capitalism to war, passing through Nazism and
Fordism), Chaplin stands as an anomaly in the narration of the self-made man dear to American ideology. The
essay intends to reconstruct the political figure of Chaplin, through the biographical notes and the investigations
by the American secret services for subversive activity linked to the Communist Party

Molecular mechanisms of TFF1-Helicobacter cross-talk
2021 - 2022Helicobacter pylori is one of the most important pathogenic bacteria associated with
various gastric diseases, including cancer. This pathogen induces an acute mucosal
inflammatory response and, if not eradicated, it could lead to chronic infection and
eventually, in a subset of individuals, to gastric cancer. In response to the infection,
the gastric mucosa releases several protective factors, including TFF1, which binds
Helicobacter in the mucus layer and reduces inflammation caused by the infection.
TFF1 is a gastro-specific tumor suppressor gene upregulated in the acute phase of the
Helicobacter infection but silenced during the chronic infection. This Ph.D. thesis
project aimed to evaluate the role of TFF1 in the context of infection.
First, TFF1 was assayed for its effects on Helicobacter at molecular and morphological
levels. The results showed that H. pylori is more prone to aggregate in a TFF1-
concentration-dependent manner and as consequence its motility through a
physiological mucus layer is compromised.
Since Helicobacter chronic infection promotes TFF1 silencing impairing the mucosal
protection and contributing to the development of malignant transformation, the
second aim of this thesis was to investigate the molecular pathways involved in this
silencing. Our hypothesis was that the cytokines secreted by activated immune cells
during H. pylori chronic infection would cause the silencing of TFF1 in gastric cells.
Based on our results, IFNγ plays the major role in the TFF1 downregulation.
Moreover, examining the TFF1 promoter, this phenotype seems to occur via C/EBPβ
that works as a negative regulator during IFNγ stimulation. According to our evidence,
IFNγ induces the expression of C/EBPβ and favors its binding to the TFF1 promoter,
repressing its transcription. In addition, the involvement of DNA methylation in this
process was evaluated, suggesting that this epigenetic mechanism is also involved in
IFNγ-dependent TFF1 silencing. [edited by Author]XXXV cicl
Digital Depth: A Volumetric Speculation
Counter commonplace associations with superficial mediation and networked flatness, the digital seems to have its own peculiar depths, which range from the infrastructural (deep sea cables, deep packet inspection, crawl depth) to the metaphorical (Deep Web, deep learning, deepfakes). This article reviews recent discussions of digital depth and argues that this concept is central to understanding multiple aspects of digital media ranging from folk theorizations to technical expertise. What is digital depth? What is deep about digital media? How does this depth interface with volumes and scales beyond the digital? Through this effort, depth emerges as an underlying feature of deeply mediatized societies
Tecnologia blockchain e diritto di voto nelle società di capitali
2021 - 2022The aim of this paper is to study, also from an interdisciplinary perspective, the effects
that the revolutionary Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) may have on
voting rights in Italian and European corporations, especially listed ones.
The benefits of the application of the new technology are identified in the increased
speed of decision-making, as well as the transparency and accuracy of voting outcomes,
instances present in the recent Directive 2017/828/EU, which amended Directive
2007/36/EC, on shareholder activism; no less important are the repercussions in terms
of reducing the possibilities for directors to manipulate the results and, reflexively, with
respect to the increased likelihood that blockchainvoting may motivate shareholders to
participate more intensively in corporate management thus fostering, with greater
frequency, the convergence of consensus on matters of crucial importance for corporate
management.
A dutiful introduction, of an IT nature, regarding the functioning of the technology under
consideration is followed by an analysis of the formation and expression of the will of
shareholders, having regard to the functioning of the assembly body of closed and open
companies, and then compares the collegial system with that of digital technology,
highlighting points of convergence and confluence.
The analysis focuses, in particular, on the confacency of the blockchain system with
respect to principles related to shareholder identification and legitimacy, shareholder
intervention and active participation in the assembly, and transparency and stability of
voting rights.
The assembly is also examined in light of the recent emergency regulations, particularly
having regard to Decree-Law, Feb. 23, 2020, No. 18, which, on the subject of Measures
to strengthen the National Health Service and economic support for families, workers
and businesses related to the epidemiological emergency from COVID-19, converted with
amendments by Law No. 27 of April 24, 2020, in Article 106 provides that the entire
course of the assembly proceedings shall take place by telematic means.
This comparison is a necessary step in assessing the possible permanent continuation of
the digital assembly model, i.e., in analyzing the phenomenon of automated decision-
making in business activity, including from a compartmental perspective, having regard
to the French system and the German reform.
In conclusion, the topic of digitization of the legal system and the social adaptability of
blockchain is addressed, first through a listing of possible and prospective uses of the
system in general, and then by highlighting its limitations and criticalities, with
particular regard to issues of corporate law including contributions having as their object
real estate or registered movable property and the circulation of the share of s.r.l.,
reporting the Spanish experience, harbinger of the overcoming of the barriers of
regulatory formalism, with the conclusion of the first entirely online purchase and sale. [edited by Author]XXXV cicl
