    Get PDF
The main reasons for students’ lack of interest in study history is on the one hand the distance they experience between their own history and the past, and on the other hand the limited capacity for deeper exploration resulting from the traditional teaching methods. On this background, a useful dialogue can be established between school, history teaching and technological tools. Methods that, if they have already achieved full credit in the film medium, still struggle to find suitable conditions in the educational application of historical or history-themed video games

Studies, from different approaches, point to the emergence of nationalism in Argentina at the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century. Two fundamental issues have eluded them all. First, in the public education system, patriotic education is invoked —notions of homeland, patriotism are recorded— and the use of the concept of nationalism is discussed; and second, All this public battle of officials from education areas occurs at a time when laws have imposed compulsory schooling since the end of the 19th century, but it is not verified in schools

Public History and Wellbeing: A Comparative Analysis of the Impact of Digital and In-Person Engagement on Visitors’ Subjective Wellbeing at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, UK

    Get PDF
Over the last two decades, there has been an emergence of research pertaining to the impact of in-person engagement with historical sites on visitor wellbeing. Yet, despite this increasingly prolific research into the impact of historic places on individual visitors’ or participants’ wellbeing, the impact of digital online engagement with historical places on user wellbeing has been largely overlooked. This research sought to investigate and compare the impact of digital engagement versus in-person engagement on wellbeing at the heritage site Elizabeth Gaskell’s House (UK). The quantitative and qualitative evaluation is based on public health care accredited measures (PANAS), previously piloted wellbeing measures designed for use in a heritage context (MWS), and visitor/user commentary. These methods enabled this study to begin to determine the differential wellbeing impact when engaging with heritage online or in-person and conclude that digital engagement provides an opportunity for historic places to lessen wellbeing inequality and support wellbeing

The Public History Turn in History Education Seen Through the Lens of the Polish–German History Textbook

    No full text
This article presents the changes in history education that bring school history closer to public history and discusses the potential of a textbook as a tool for fostering public history. The analysis of the chapters dealing with the Second World War from the Polish–German history textbook, Europe – Our History, provides arguments in support of the claim that history education may become history for the public – by engaging pupils, not just providing them with knowledge; with the public – by letting the pupils reflect on the lesson content, not take it for granted; about the public – by focusing on ordinary people’s fates, not on political and military operations; and by the public – by referring extensively to people’s memories and letting primary sources speak for themselves, not just illustrate the historiographical narrative

Public Debates, Public History, and School History Curricula: The Greek Case

    No full text
Public debates about school history curricula meet the interests of public historians and educators in many different ways because they raise questions such as: “What history or whose history do we teach in schools?” “How can we make school history more public?” “How can the school history subject move toward a critical consumption and production of public representations of the historical past?” The withdrawal of the 2018–2019 history curricula in Greece and their replacement in 2021 with the updated history curricula of 2015, added another link in the long chain of educational reform and counter-reform in Greece, and demonstrated, once again, the close relationship between school history and public education policy. Moreover, in the Greek case, the revealing comparison between the withdrawn history curricula and those that replaced them brings to the fore the ways in which public history approaches can significantly contribute to the meaningful engagement of pupils in school history and, more generally, to an open, flexible, learning-centered, and inclusive education

    No full text
The contribution dwells on Directive 2016/800/EU, put in the context of the measures adopted in the field of judicial cooperation in criminal matters and with an impact on juvenile criminal proceedings. The instrument, which is without prejudice to the principle of non-regression and which must be examined in the light of its implementation in the different Member States, presents several profiles of interest with respect to the fundamental rights of the minors enshrined in international and European sources. In the Italian legal system, the national legislation was already innovative and in line with the provisions of the Directive. However, the application practice does not always correspond to international standards. Moreover, there are discrepancies between the different judicial districts. Hence, the need to examine the outcomes of the European Union’s action on the legal basis of Article 82 TFEU, with a view to improving mutual trust between the criminal justice systems of Member States and creating a child-friendly criminal justice system.

Language contact, variation and change across the Italian communities of Bedford, Peterborough and Loughborough in the post-Brexit era

    Get PDF
In the wake of previous research about the Italians in the uk (Balirano & Guzzo, 2011; Guzzo, 2014; Di Salvo, 2012), the present contribution investigates the multi-layered relationship between migration, identity and linguistic diversity in England and starts questioning the complexities of self- and otheridentification as well as belonging of members of a heritage community in the uk in light of a more overt rise of anti-immigration sentiments since the eu referendum. The analysis draws upon a corpus consisting of a set of 12 ethnographic interviews, collected by means of audio recording as well as qualitative data elicited by means of a questionnaire survey distributed to second and third generation Anglo Italians of Bedford, Peterborough and Loughborough from July to December 2017. Data are analyzed by using a combination of variationist sociolinguistics and deductive content analysis; comparable data from previous research are used to contrast the present corpus. The findings provide mixed and multi-layered behaviors which act as a reflection of their identity construction as well as throw light on their level of integration
