The study was conducted to assess the human factors responsible for accident causation in the oil and gas companies in the Niger Delta region. Human factors (HFs) were operationalized using personal level factors (PLF), management level factors (MLF) and National Level factors (NLF) while accident causation was conceptualized using rate of accidents (RA) and rate of incidents (RI). Cross-sectional and inferential designs were adopted and population comprised of field-workers of six sampled oil and gas companies in Niger-Delta from which 440 samples were obtained using Multi-stage sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaire designed based on 5-point Likert and data analysis were done with descriptive statistics and regression model using XL-STAT version-20.1. The results of the descriptive statistics using weighted average (WA) revealed that human factors which include PLF. MLF and NLF are substantial accident causation factors with WA of 3.44. 3.18 and 3.09 > 3.00 respectively and there is high level of accident occurrence which includes RA and RI with WA of 3.92 and 3.99 respectively. The regression model analysis revealed that: there is positive and significant relationship between human factors and total accident prevalence in the oil and gas companies in the Niger-Delta (coefficient of determinant = 0.528, p-value = 0.000). The study concluded that human factors are substantial causalities of accident in oil and gas firms in Niger-Delta. The study recommended that Management of the oil and gas companies in this researched region should also be very intentional and also committed to designing and developing proper and flexible safety management practices such as safety training policies, safety awareness programs, safety rules and procedures etc. as such would also help workers to align with safety policies of the firms and by extension reduce accident occurrences

FIRE RISK ASSESSMENT OF THE SEPARATION UNITS IN SELECTED OIL AND GAS COMPANIES IN RIVERS STATE

This study focused on fire risk assessment of the separation units in selected oil and gas companies in Rivers State. Analytical and descriptive research designs were adopted. Separation unit which is among the most fire vulnerable units was considered in this study. Twelve fire-related hazards associated with the separation units were ascertain using Fire and Explosion Risk Assessment (FERA) (2020) guideline and the hazards were grouped into flammable sources and heat/ignition sources. The risk assessment was conducted by ranking of the hazards based on their risk score using Conventional Risk assessment (CRA) and Weighed Risk Assessment (WRA). The risk score of the fire-related hazards were evaluated using their severity and likelihood. The severity and likelihood of the hazards were determine using questionnaire administered to four hundred field-workers in three selected oil and gas firms in the study area and a predetermined factor (response weight) was assigned to field-workers based on their safety-related experience. The results revealed that fire-risk hazards in the separator unit were mostly classified under “High risk and Extreme risk” using Risk Assessment Matrix because their risk scores were greater than the 12.00 threshold for low risk hazard. The fault tree analysis (FTA) revealed that “Leakage of Hydrocarbon due to failure from high pressure flow” and “Failure of temperature controller” are unique fire-risk hazards with most devastating fire effect that must not be allowed to co-exist in the separation units. It was concluded that separation units of the oil and gas companies are high-to-extreme risk to fire accidents. It was therefore recommended that management of the oil and gas companies should pay a closer attention to the fire-safety of the separation units because it is one of most vulnerable unit to fire incident in the oil and gas companie

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent a significant occupational health challenge in the construction industry, leading to substantial productivity losses. This cross-sectional study investigated the prevalent risk factors associated with the development of musculoskeletal pain (MSP) among 285 road construction workers in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Data were collected using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire across seven (7) construction sites. The overall 12-month prevalence of MSP was 62.8%. Lower back pain was the most frequently reported (34%), followed by shoulder and upper back (6.3% each). Other affected areas included the knees (4.2%), hips (3.9%), wrists/hands (3.2%), ankles/feet (2.8%), and neck (2.5%). 17.2% of the respondents had mild pain, 17.2% had moderate pain, and 19.6% had severe pain, respectively. The Chi-square tests revealed a significant association between age (p<0.001), daily work duration (p<0.001), working posture (p=0.024), and job task (p=0.006) with the occurrence of musculoskeletal pain among construction workers (p < 0.05). The majority of workers experiencing pain (57.9%) were treated with medication, while only a small portion (6%) received physiotherapy. The study concluded that musculoskeletal pain is highly prevalent among road construction workers in Port Harcourt
