    Cuba: at a glance

    No full text
Cuba finds itself in a unique position in the field of ECP. On the one hand, it is relatively low-income and internationally isolated, limiting its international appeal. On the other, it retains remarkable strengths—such as impressive scientific and educational prowess and an image of fighting for the developing world—which boost its international profile. At the same time, it is also torn between the desire to shield itself from US influence and the need to allow culture to flourish freely without burdensome government interference. These tensions define Cuba’s ECP, which is divided between seeming like a Cold War relic and an important model for current international cooperation

    No full text

This study contributes to an understanding of the topic of ‘gaming’ and its derivatives and to developing a practice-oriented, qualified extended gaming literacy for actors in foreign cultural and educational policy with the help of interdisciplinary, theory-led overviews, models and recommendations for action. Extensive technical or technological expertise is not a prerequisite. Especially in the field of inter-national cooperation, this study can serve as an inspiration through its various practical examples and their academic contextualisation. The first part of the study highlights the potentials of gaming while, at the same time, looks at the latest developments such as ‘the Metaverse’. An action-leading model provides the tools to be able to assess different dimensions of gaming and its impacts. Different aspects of the model are explained by means of ten short case studies. The study con-cludes with recommendations for action and a critical outlook, particularly with respect to open research questions

The Missing Foundation: Culture's place within and beyond the UN Sustainable Development Goals

    Get PDF
In the 2020 publication The Missing Pillar - Culture’s Contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the British Council sought to present relevant evidence of their programmes’ impact and to position culture as a missing pillar in the wider debate of culture’s role in processes of sustainable development. The response to that original Missing Pillar report and its resonance for a range of organisations prompted us to commission this further piece of research. This report is not only a dynamic follow up to our Missing Pillar report, it brings a cultural perspective to the debates about development initiated by 2015 World Development report 'Mind, Society and Behaviour'. Part one of this new report will look at more recent conversations in the culture and SDG field, exploring who talks – and who doesn’t – about culture in sustainable development, what ideas are being favoured, and what rationales tend to dominate the conversations. Part two is an in-depth analysis of 10 British Council culture programmes and how they relate to the UN SDGs throughout their programme cycles, from design all the way to evaluation. The evidence will help us understand culture’s actual contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Part three questions whether the SDGs are the best framework for culture to align itself to, situates culture in various other development logics, and presents an alternative hybrid concept for cultural actors to consider when working in relation to sustainable development

    Brazil: at a glance

Since the fall of the military dictatorship in 1981, Brazil has strived to use its ECP to shape a new multipolar geopolitical and economic system around the concepts of based on three guiding concepts of development, universalism, and autonomy. At the beginning of the 21st century this took the form of the “BRICS,” a group comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Although it once appeared to be a growing economic force that could shape this new order and provide a stronger basis for ECP, economic growth and political turmoil have threatened these efforts
