В процессе онтогенеза постепенно формируется структура кожи, оптимальное обеспечение большого количества функций осуществляется кожей. У исследовательских млекопитающих, в том числе экспериментальных животных, строение кожи имеет фундаментальное и практическое значение и в определенной степени особенности эмбрионального развития млекопитающих повторяют этап формирования тканей человека. Многие вопросы, касающиеся временной фазы изменений формирования таких компонентов кожи, как фиброзная основа дермы, волосы и жировая ткань, в онтогенезе остаются дискуссионными.
