Evaluating the Feasibility of Hydrologic Parameter Transferability to Ungauged Domains Under Data-Sparse Conditions in Nigeria
Hydrologic modelling has become a vital tool for formulating policies to plan and manage water resources sustainably. However, inadequate or non-available hydro-meteorological datasets significantly hinder its application in ungauged basins. This issue has highlighted critical research gaps and deprived such regions of the advantages of continuous hydrologic modelling for understanding and mitigating hydrologic extremes and developing and managing water resources infrastructure. The major objectives of this study are to: (1) evaluate the ability of remotely-sensed precipitation products to capture rainfall dynamics across different locations in Nigeria, (2) assess the mesoscale hydrologic model (mHM) streamflow simulation within a multi/uni-variable calibration framework, driven by gridded precipitation datasets, (3) evaluate the regionalization of mHM parameters from donor to ungauged basins for streamflow predictions, and (4) model actual evapotranspiration and soil moisture across Nigeria using mHM parameters acquired when constrained using only streamflow data. The ability of several gridded precipitation products (CHIRPS, PERSIANN-CDR and TAMSAT) to replicate rainfall characteristics at 24 climatic stations distributed across Nigeria was evaluated against in-situ measurements. The results indicate that all products well captured the observed annual cycle and spatial trends across selected locations. Statistical assessment reveals that the CHIRPS dataset was consistent with observations across most climatic stations, accurately reproducing local rainfall characteristics. Next, various gridded precipitation products within a uni- and multi-variable calibration framework were employed to evaluate the performance of the mHM across four different data-scarce basins in Nigeria. This model utilizing CHIRPS and ERA5 rainfall datasets as input, consistently generated acceptable Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE) values (0.5 0.5) across all modelling domains compared to using mHM default parameters. Subsequently, the optimized model parameters were transferred to three independent basins for streamflow prediction. Acceptable streamflow simulation using regionalized mHM parameter sets was shown only in one basin, presenting a KGE of 0.54. Lastly, optimized mHM parameter sets derived from distinct basin-precipitation configurations were utilized to simulate actual evapotranspiration (aET) and soil moisture across three agro-climatic zones in Nigeria. Spatial patterns of mean annual aET for all mHM configurations exhibited similar trends with observations (GLEAM and FLUXNET). CHIRPS-driven aET simulations demonstrated satisfactory correlation scores (r > 0.5) with the GLEAM datasets. Similarly, all mHM setups showcased comparable trends in the annual aET cycle, with acceptable model fits (KGE > 0.7) observed in the Sahel region. The monthly temporal variation of soil moisture anomaly exhibited acceptable agreements (r > 0.8) across all agro-climatic zones. This study represents the first evaluation of mHM under sparse input data constraints in Nigeria. The results of this study not only align with the objectives of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences initiative on prediction in ungauged basins but also address the challenges of hydrologic modelling in Nigeria (and in regions with similar climatic conditions)
Quality Management Outweighs Pandemic : Retrospective Analysis Shows Improved Quality of Care for <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em> Bacteremia Despite SARS-CoV-2
Background: Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) is of great clinical relevance, as it is the most common type of bacteremia. Several studies show that the quality of care and thus the outcome can be positively influenced by the involvement of infectious disease specialists and structured programs like Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS). In 2020, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic occurred, which dominated the healthcare system and global events during this time. At the same time, a standard operational procedure (SOP) for SAB quality management (SABQM) was introduced in a German maximum-care hospital with 500 beds. Additionally, voluntary AMS team consultations were introduced in June 2021. This work addresses whether the introduction of SABQM has led to an improvement in the quality of care for SAB, despite the possible negative influences of the pandemic. Methods: Retrospective statistical analyses were conducted on all 145 cases coded as SAB at this hospital during the "pre-pandemic2 period (2017 to 2019, 75 cases) and the pandemic period (2020 to 2022, 70 cases). Population parameters and quality management parameters were extracted from the clinical patient documentation. In a first analysis, the SARS-CoV-2 status served as a discriminatory parameter to determine its influence on the quality of care within the "pandemic period". In a second analysis, the period served as a discriminatory parameter to determine its influence on the quality of care. In a third analysis, the use of AMS team consultation served as a discriminatory parameter to determine its influence on the quality of care in a subgroup of 42 cases from June 2021 to 2022. Results: The SARS-CoV-2 status had no influence on the population parameters or the quality management parameters. Between both analyzed periods, there was an improvement in the quality management parameters, with statistically significant higher rates of follow-up blood cultures, transthoracic echocardiography and adequate antibiotic therapy. AMS team consultation led to a relevant, but not statistically significant improvement in the quality management indicators. Conclusions: An SOP for SABQM leads to an improvement in the quality of care, even under the possible negative influences of a pandemic. AMS team consultations further strengthen this positive influence, even if this is not statistically significant due to the small number of cases in the subgroup analyzed
The increasing demands from politics and society as well as the already noticeable consequences of climate change pose ever greater challenges for arable farming. These developments make it necessary to rethink existing methods and integrate innovative approaches into practice. A key factor here is soil cultivation, which offers great potential for optimisation. One promising method could be ultra-shallow tillage with a working depth of 0 to 2 cm.
Soil tillage methods can be categorised according to operating principles, objectives and tillage depth and intensity. Depending on the method, specific equipment is used. The effects of different tillage systems on ecological, economic and agronomical parameters are complex and depend on other factors such as weather conditions, crop rotation and intercropping. Extensive methods help to protect the soil and the environment, for example by reducing susceptibility to erosion by wind and water.
Stubble cultivation after winter oilseed rape and winter cereals is particularly demanding. After the winter oilseed rape harvest, volunteer oilseed rape and high residuel nitrogen content in the soil pose major challenges. After the winter cereal harvest, it is primarily harvest residues and volunteer cereals that require attention. The previous intensive, mixed tillage method has disadvantages. A promising alternative is ultra-shallow, full-surface and non-mixing tillage with a working depth of 0 to 2 cm. The requirements for ultra-shallow tillage cannot yet be fully met by conventional tillage implements. A new implement has therefore been developed: a 6 m wide rotary cultivator that is carried in the tractor's three-point linkage. The device consists of two beams, each with eight parallelogram-guided rotors, which are inclined along the X and Y axes. Due to the forward speed, the rotors rotate around the Z-axis so that the tools mounted on them can work the soil precisely at a depth of 0 to 2 cm.
The rotary grinder was tested, validated and further developed in extensive field trials between 2022 and 2024 together with a straw harrow, a short disc harrow and a spring tine cultivator. The results show that ultra-shallow stubble cultivation can stimulate the germination of volunteer oilseed rape better than cultivation at a depth of 5 cm with the short disc harrow. However, the latter proved to be more effective in stimulating the germination of volunteer cereals and was more effective overall in controlling volunteer oilseed rape and cereals. One advantage of ultra-shallow cultivation is the better maintenance of soil cover with crop residues, which is reduced to a lesser extent compared to the short disc harrow. In addition, the process costs are lower for ultra-shallow cultivation with straw harrow and rotary grinder. However, it was found that the rotary grinder does not cut the entire surface under certain conditions, which is why further technical optimisation is required.
Stubble cultivation harbours numerous conflicting objectives, for example between the effective control of volunteer seeds and plants and protection against erosion. Alternative approaches such as the complete abandonment of stubble cultivation or the use of total herbicides are only suitable to a limited extent. On the other hand, the cultivation of cover crops and the implementation of conservation agriculture are very promising.
Overall, the methods tested proved to be practical and valid. However, there were differences in terms of time, costs and feasibility within the extensive trials
Global structures of digital dependence and the rise of technopoles
What are the global structures of digital dependency, and to what extent do the US and China dominate them? How can patterns of digital dependency be understood theoretically and measured empirically? These questions are crucial for both policymakers and academics. Our paper contributes to ongoing debates on the implications of increasing asymmetries and power concentrations driven by digital transformation and the rise of platforms. Building on insights from international relations (IR), international political economy (IPE), and scholarship on (infra)structural dependencies and the weaponisation of interdependence, this article draws on a comprehensive dataset from the Digital Dependence Index (DDI) to offer a framework for mapping and theorising the global structures of digital dependency. Across three dimensions – hardware, platforms and patents – we show that high and increasing levels of digital dependence have emerged, and that the US and China can be characterised as technopoles with significant technological autonomy and great potential to weaponise infrastructure and technologies. Such a structural perspective can be used to further explore and conceptualise the nexus between digital infrastructures, dependency and autonomy on the one hand, and the emergence of a new techno-geopolitical world order on the other
Clustering Trajectories: Detecting Patterns in Spatio-Temporal Data
In this thesis, we study the detection of patterns in spatio-temporal data sets in the form of trajectory data. Many application areas collect unstructured trajectory data. Applications for the analysis of such data range from gait analysis of human movement to traffic-flow analysis, epidemiological hotspot detection, and Lagrangian analysis of particle simulations. Trajectory data is typically modeled as a sequence of points that defines a polygonal curve via linear interpolation between consecutive points. One of the most fundamental ways of detecting patterns in any kind of data is clustering, which aims to partition the data into groups where points from the same group are 'close' to one another and those from different groups are 'far apart'. The clustering of polygonal curves is the main focus of this thesis.
The first clustering problem we study is the (k, l)-median problem for polygonal curves, which asks for k center curves, each with at most l points, minimizing the sum of dynamic time warping (DTW) distances from each input curve to its closest center. Numerous classical results for clustering problems have been extended to many different settings. A common assumption made is that the distance function is a metric, which DTW is not. Despite this, we provide a polynomial-time approximation algorithm with an approximation factor of O(m l), where m is the maximum number of points in any input curve. This is achieved by extending known algorithms for coreset construction—i.e., problem-specific input condensations—from metric spaces to the non-metric space of polygonal curves under DTW.
The second clustering problem we consider is Subtrajectory Covering, motivated by the need to detect patterns within a single curve by segmenting it into its constituent semantic parts. This is formulated as a set cover problem based on the continuous Fréchet distance. Given a polygonal curve with n points, the goal is to compute the smallest set of center curves, each with at most l points, such that every point on the input curve is covered by some center. A point is considered covered if it lies on a subtrajectory of the input curve whose (continuous) Fréchet distance to some center curve is at most Δ. We provide bicriteria approximation algorithms for arbitrary curves as well as for a subclass of realistic curves. Both algorithms approximate the required number kΔ of centers by a factor of O(log n) and the distance threshold Δ by a factor of O(1). For arbitrary curves, the algorithm runs in roughly O(√kΔn5/2) time. For the subclass of realistic curves (or more formally, c-packed curves whose arc length inside any ball of radius r is bounded by cr), the algorithm runs in roughly O(kΔcn2) time. We demonstrate the viability of both the problem formulation and the algorithm on real-world data.
Additionally, we investigate two related questions. First, given a clustering of trajectory data, a natural question is how to classify a new trajectory which is not part of the input. To this end, we design a data structure that answers approximate nearest neighbor queries: Given n input curves of complexity m and a query curve q, compute the closest input curve to q w.r.t. the continuous Fréchet distance. Our data structure answers such queries in roughly O(F(m, Φ) log n) time, where F(m, Φ) depends only on m and the spread Φ of vertices and edges. Second, we analyze the detection of erroneous patterns within a curve: Given two curves, how can we optimally modify one curve by replacing pieces of the curve with line segments so as to minimize the continuous Fréchet distance to the other curve? We show that this problem is not fixed-parameter tractable in the number of modifications and give a polynomial-time O(1)-approximation algorithm for its decision variant
Fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (<em>FGFR2</em>) genetic polymorphisms contribute to fused roots in human molars
Fibroblast growth factors (FGFRs) signaling are required for human tooth development. Its dysregulation affects tooth formation and patients with FGFR2 mutations often present dental anomalies in the spectrum of the syndrome. This study aimed to investigate whether genetic polymorphisms in FGFR2 are associated with molar fused roots. The null hypothesis is that genetic variations in FGFR2 are not associated with isolated cases (non-syndromic) of molars fused roots. Panoramic radiographs of non-syndromic patients were used to assess the occurrence of fused roots in molars. Genomic DNA analysis was performed to investigate polymorphisms within the candidate gene. The association between fused roots and genetic polymorphisms was analyzed using allelic and genotypic distributions, and haplotype frequencies. Odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were calculated to assess the chance of presenting fused roots. The significance level was set at p FGFR2 were associated with fused roots in human molars
Evaluation of personalized video gaming therapy in patients with depression - motivational, behavioral, and neuronal mechanisms
This thesis examines the efficacy of personalized video game-based cognitive training (VGT) as an adjunctive treatment in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), focusing on its motivational, behavioral, and neuronal effects. MDD is characterized not only by emotional disturbances but also significant cognitive deficits, notably in visuospatial memory, executive functioning, and attention, impairments that frequently persist even after remission of mood symptoms. This research evaluates the impact of a commercially available 3D video game training (VGT) using "Super Mario Odyssey" on cognitive performance, depressive symptoms, motivation, and neuroplasticity in the entorhinal cortex (EC), a relevant brain area for spatial memory and navigation.
In three separate research phases, participants with moderate to severe MDD were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: a 3D video gaming group ("Super Mario Odyssey"), an active control group ("CogPack"), or a treatment-as-usual (TAU) control group. Participants underwent cognitive assessments, motivational evaluations, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure cognitive and neuronal changes pre- and post-intervention.
Results demonstrate that participants in the VGT group experienced a significant reduction in depressive symptoms over time. Moreover, the VGT group demonstrated a significant higher mean level of training motivation compared to the control groups. Exploratory analyses indicate trends of within-group improvements in visuospatial memory, but VGT does not show statistically significant superiority over CogPack. Furthermore, VGT does not significantly improve executive functioning, attention, verbal working memory, or psychological quality of life beyond traditional training methods. Moreover, contrary to initial hypotheses no significant structural or functional neuroplastic changes are observed in the EC following the VGT intervention.
These findings highlight the therapeutic potential of VGT as an engaging and motivating adjunctive treatment capable of reducing depressive symptoms and enhancing engagement in cognitive training. However, the absence of broader cognitive benefits and measurable EC neuroplasticity suggests the need for longer training durations, larger sample sizes, adaptive gaming mechanics, and consideration of game-specific cognitive demands. Despite these challenges, the increasing accessibility of video game-based training presents an exciting opportunity for innovative, cost-effective, and engaging mental health interventions that could benefit individuals with MDD
Simulating Soil Moisture Dynamics in a Diversified Cropping System Under Heterogeneous Soil Conditions
Agro-ecosystem models are useful tools to assess crop diversification strategies or management adaptations to within-field heterogeneities, but require proper simulation of soil water dynamics, which are crucial for crop growth. To simulate these, the model requires soil hydraulic parameter inputs which are often derived using pedotransfer functions (PTFs). Various PTFs are available and show varying performance; therefore, in this study, we calibrated and validated an agro-ecosystem model using the Hypres PTF and the German Manual of Soil Mapping approach and adjusting bulk density for the top- and subsoil. Experimental data were collected at the "patchCROP" landscape laboratory in Brandenburg, Germany. The daily volumetric soil water content (SWC) at 12 locations and above ground biomass at flowering were used to evaluate model performance. The findings highlight the importance of calibrating agro-ecosystem models for spatially heterogeneous soil conditions not only for crop growth parameters, but also for soil water-related processes—in this case by PTF choice—in order to capture the interplay of top- and especially subsoil heterogeneity, climate, crop management, soil moisture dynamics and crop growth and their variability within a field. The results showed that while the impact of bulk density was rather small, the PTF choice led to differences in simulating SWC and biomass. Employing the Hypres PTF, the model was able to simulate the climate and seasonal crop growth interactions at contrasting soil conditions for soil moisture and biomass reasonably well. The model error in SWC was largest after intense rainfall events for locations with a loamy subsoil texture. The validated model has the potential to be used to study the impact of management practices on soil moisture dynamics under heterogeneous soil and crop conditions
