The Key to Fostering Transdisciplinary Research Collaboration: Finding the Connections
No full textHow to foster collaboration among researchers is an enduring issue facing university administrators. Homophily, the tendency that people like to work with those similar to themselves, has been found as a fundamental mechanism behind scientific collaboration. When similarity breeds connections, collaboration becomes conceivable. In a multidisciplinary context, like a university, how can a homophily mechanism be applied to facilitate research collaboration? This paper proposes a co-word analysis approach which can be used to process a large volumes of data. The aim is to identify and reveal hidden connections between university faculty members and contribute towards cultivating transdisciplinary research collaboration.Comment favoriser la collaboration entre chercheurs est un problème permanent auquel sont confrontés les administrateurs universitaires. L’homophilie, la tendance selon laquelle les gens aiment à travailler avec ceux qui leur ressemblent, a été reconnue comme un mécanisme fondamental derrière la collaboration scientifique. Lorsque la similarité engendre des connexions, la collaboration devient concevable. Dans un contexte multidisciplinaire, comme une université, comment un mécanisme d\u27homophilie peut-il être appliqué pour faciliter la collaboration en recherche? Cet article propose une approche d\u27analyse de co-occurence de termes qui peut être utilisée pour traiter de gros volumes de données. Proficient Use of Open Data Requires These Core Information Skills: An Open Data Community Perspective
No full textExpanding access to open data, such as government data and research data, requires that we consider how citizens and stakeholders can best access the value these data hold. Should individuals rely on an intermediary to create information products from the data, or should they dive in and work with raw data? Building on previous work defining a core set of data literacy skills, we convened a workshop with 34 open data professionals to define the core set of skills for working with open data: "open data literacy". Analysis of their perspectives reveals a focus on non-technical skills, like creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking, as a priority over technical skills like coding and visualization. We describe their perspective in detail, and reflect on the significance of our findings for information professionals.Élargir l\u27accès aux données ouvertes, telles que les données gouvernementales et les données de recherche, exige que nous examinions comment les citoyens et les parties prenantes peuvent le mieux accéder à la valeur de ces données. Coming to our senses: considerations for studying sensory information
No full textEveryone uses information gathered through the senses to understand and navigate dailylife. Despite this ubiquity, some types of sensory information have received littleattention within library and information studies (LIS). This CAIS paper analyzes onesense as an example, the sense of smell, in order to identify cultural, linguistic, andmethodological considerations for bringing it into greater focus within our discipline.This paper illustrates the complexities of studying sensory information, and argues thatdoing so will contribute to richer examinations of people’s information practices
Interviews that attend to emplacement: the “walk-through” method
No full textWithin library and information studies (LIS), there is growing awareness of the role ofthe body and its surroundings in people’s information and knowledge experiences.Predominant data collection methods, such as the sit-down interview, should bereexamined in light of this awareness. This paper examines interview methodstheoretically and empirically. First, this paper introduces the concept of emplacement, theinterrelationship of body, mind, and place, as a useful lens for challenging conventionalinterviewing practices. Portrait of the Incarcerated Woman as a Reading Mother: Revealing the Perceived Impact of a Shared Reading Program
No full textThis research explores the perceived impact of a shared reading program on incarcerated women and their families. Several former members of the Mother-Child Read Aloud program offered at Nova Institute for Women in Truro, Nova Scotia will be interviewed to determine what elements of the program, if any, strengthen family relationships, build family literacy, foster empowerment, and ease re-unification and re-entry into their communities. Insights gained from this research will assist policy-makers andpractitioners in determining how to co-create meaningful programs that produce positive outcomes for incarcerated women, their families, and our communities
Whither Physics? Publication Data and the Future of Research in Physics
No full textThe discipline of physics is an extraordinarily lively one, producing a huge literature. Since physics, as is the case with any science, is based on the answers to questions, it is a worthwhile endeavor to explore what fundamental areas are being studied. The exploration of what is published is valuable in its own right, since it helps to define what types of questions are being asked and the extent to which the literature reflects the questioning. Beyond that purpose, there is something of an ethical nature to the exploration. That ethical basis could, if one has sufficient hubris, be expressed as, what should the research field be. The proposed paper examines the publication landscape of sub-fields in physics and investigates the possibilities inherent in the largest body of literature—string theory.La discipline de la physique est extraordinairement vivante. Elle produit une énorme littérature. Du fait que la physique, comme c\u27est le cas pour toute science, est fondée sur les réponses à des questions, il est utile d\u27explorer quels sont les domaines fondamentaux étudiés. L\u27exploration de ce qui est publié est utile en soi, puisqu’elle aide à définir les types de questions qui sont posées et la mesure dans laquelle la littérature reflète le questionnement. Au-delà de ce but, il y a un aspect éthique à cette exploration. Cette base éthique pourrait, si l\u27on est suffisamment affecté d\u27hubris, s’exprimer comme ce que devrait être le domaine de recherche. Thirty-one Years of the Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science: A Content Analysis
No full texthis paper presents results of a content analysis of the Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science/ La Revue canadienne des sciences de l’information et de bibliothéconomie. All articles published since 1986 were analyzed for language of publication, number of authors, authors’ geographic location, article subject matter, and research methods used in empirical work. Longitudinal trends are noted. These data are compared with earlier descriptions of Information Science in Canada, and with analyses of the work of Canadian scholars in Information Science, to paint a fuller picture of the field as it has matured over the past 31 years.Cet article présente les résultats d\u27une analyse de contenu de la Revue canadienne des sciences de l\u27information et Bibliothéconomie / Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science. Tous les articles publiés depuis 1986 ont été analysés pour la langue de publication, le nombre d\u27auteurs, la situation géographique des auteurs, le sujet de l\u27article et les méthodes de recherche utilisées dans les travaux empiriques. Knowledge Mobilization: Useful to Grassroots Organizing?
No full textMy presentation focuses on the movement of information and knowledge to create social change. I explore whether Knowledge Mobilization (KMb) units could assist grassroots movements in sharing their goals and information with a broader audience. I do so through a textual analysis of a KMb unit social media and publications. Findings suggest that while a KMb does provide a variety of services, they are focused on supporting academics. Thus, it is unclear if connecting with a KMb unit would help a grassroots movement.Ma présentation porte sur le mouvement de l\u27information et du savoir pour créer un changement social. J\u27examine si les unités de mobilisation des connaissances (KMb) pourraient aider les mouvements locaux à partager leurs objectifs et leurs informations avec un public plus large. Je le fais à travers une analyse textuelle des médias sociaux et des publications d’une unité KMb. Les résultats suggèrent que bien que les KMb fournissent une variété de services, elles se concentrent sur le soutien aux universitaires. Balancing Socio-Emotional and Informational Considerations in Social Q&A: The Case of Academia Stack Exchange
No full textMany frequent social Q&A sites to share information, with social and emotional support often important in continued use of these sites as resources for both information and socialization, but balancing these is not easy. We explored the socioemotional motivations of users of Academia Stack Exchange and the influence of these on community coherence. Findings identified seven categories of socio-emotional motivations contributing positively or negatively to coherence. Academia SE focuses on being an information resource and on acculturation, learning, and translation, akin to legitimate peripheral participation, but empathetic concerns stress the necessity of further balancing socio-emotional and informational considerations.Beaucoup de gens fréquentent des sites sociaux de questions/réponses pour partager des informations, avec un soutien social et émotionnel souvent important dans l\u27utilisation continue de ces sites en tant que ressources à la fois pour l\u27information et la socialisation, mais équilibrer ces aspects n’est pas facile. Nous avons exploré les motivations socioémotionnelles des utilisateurs de l’Academia Stack Exchange et leur influence sur la cohésion des communautés. Les résultats ont identifié sept catégories de motivations socioémotionnelles contribuant positivement ou négativement à la cohésion. L’Academia SE vise à être une ressource informationnelle, et sur l\u27acculturation, l\u27apprentissage et la traduction, s\u27apparentant à une participation périphérique légitime, mais les préoccupations d’empathie soulignent la nécessité d\u27équilibrer davantage les considérations socio-émotionnelles et informationnelles
