Phylomemetics as a framework for bibliographic synthesis

    No full text
The description of texts based on their title, author, publisher, and with appeals to authority records, has been a cornerstone of bibliographic description as practiced in library catalogues. There are also many parallel or alternative descriptive projects from other fields. Examples of these include fairy tale motifs, literature tropes, character archetypes, story patterns, subject headings, semantic features, citations, allusions, musical influence, theater family trees, and more. Each of these projects represent understandings of texts that are valued by people and could enhance the library catalogue. What is needed is a framework for synthesizing a diversity of descriptions into the catalogue

Search engine paths not taken: Revisiting early insights and exploring future challenges to enrich search methods curriculum

    No full text
This ongoing study builds on previous work that established a theoretical model for developing search expertise; this model then guided the design of an MLIS course on advanced search methods. To further enrich the course content, the design included a look-back at 1970s design decisions affecting search engines and a look-forward from challenges in today’s information landscape, such as algorithmic bias, filter bubbles, and market-driven results ranking. The study is evaluating the new course by analyzing peer-to-peer discourse in online discussion forums, using template analysis methodology. This paper reports on the analytical processes being used, preliminary results, and next steps
