    Natural Language Dialog System Considering Speaker’s Emotion Calculated from Acoustic Features

    application/pdfWith the development of Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems, people can not only operate computer systems through task-oriented conversation but also enjoy non-task-oriented conversation with the computer. When an IVR system generates a esponse, it usually refers to just verbal information of the user’sutterance. However, when a person gloomily says “I’m fine,” people will respond not by saying “That’s wonderful” but “Really?” or “Are you OK?” because we can consider both verbal and non-verbal information such as tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures, and so on. In this paper, we propose an intelligent IVR system that considers not only verbal but also non-verbal information. To estimate a speaker’s emotion (positive, negative, or neutral), 384 acoustic features extracted from the speaker’s utterance are utilized to machine learning (SVM). Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML)-based response generating rules are expanded to be able to consider the speaker’s emotion. As a result of the experiment, subjects felt that the proposed dialog system was more likable, enjoyable, and did not give machine-like reactions.This paper was previously accepted at the 7th International Workshop on Spoken Dialogue System (IWSDS2016), Saariselkä, Finland, January 13-16, 2016.     An Observation on Taste Related Expressions of Native English Speakers : With Some Reference to Japanese

    application/pdfIn this study, we aim to elucidate a universal principle based on the physiologic universality of human beings in their taste expressions and in the linguistic elements of the Japanese and English languages by investigating similarities and differences of expressions relating to taste. It is hoped that these similarities and differences can be used in future studies. Ohashi (2010) listed and provided 220 Japanese taste expressions. Seto (2003) classified these taste expressions in a "taste words classification list" and categorized them into 37 different kinds. We argue that it is possible to classify the expressions found in other languages by using Seto's list. Additionally, it is expected that there are different taste expressions which are absent in the Japanese language but present in other languages. We seek to describe what type of expressions these are in the English language and how Native English speakers use them. This study investigates taste expressions in English as used by 50 native English speakers. Respondents wrote freely about possible English expressions they use to describe the taste of about 240 foods. From the survey, we received 1,240 kinds of different taste expressions. (The total number of answers was 10,124). We classified about 1,183 kinds of taste expressions on the basis of Seto's "taste words classification list." Two points became clear in this investigation: First, taste expressions in the English and Japanese languages differ in both number and kind. Second, plural metaphor expressions of synesthesia exist in English but not in Japanese.     Establishing a Treaty Implementation Regime : The Case of the ATT

    application/pdfThe Arms Trade Treaty (hereinafter referred to as “ATT”) was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 2 April 2013 and the ATT was opened for signature after two rounds of diplomatic conferences, which failed to agree on the treaty text. As the ATT entered into force on 24 December 2014, the first session of the Conference of the States Parties was held between 24 and 27 August 2015 and an extraordinary session was held on 29 February 2016. These conferences adopted a series of important decisions about the seat of the secretariat, rules of procedure, financial mechanisms, etc. Thus implementation of the ATT has fully begun. This article tries to evaluate the process to establish a treaty implementation regime focusing on whether the relevant decisions were pertinent for implementing the ATT from the viewpoint of the secretariat functions, strengthening implementation, universalisation of this Treaty, all of which are vital for the Treaty to function effectively.本稿は2016年度広島市立大学特定研究費(1030301)による研究成果の一部である。journal articl

    “Face” and Consumer Behavior in the Chinese Market

Based on various discussions in the literature, the framework of face, as it relates to consumer behavior, is defined as the psychological satisfaction obtained from the results of an individual’s image management. The purpose of image management is to extract a desired response or evaluation from others, and can be achieved through consumption. Chinese people tend to have strong face consciousness.     Dispersed fluorescence spectroscopy of the SiCN ˜A2Δ – ˜X2Π system : Observation of some vibrational levels with chaotic characteristics

    application/pdfThe laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectrum of the ˜A 2Δ – ˜X 2Π transition was obtained for SiCN generated by laser ablation under supersonic free jet expansion. The vibrational structures of the dispersed fluorescence (DF) spectra from single vibronic levels (SVL’s) were analyzed with consideration of the Renner-Teller (R-T) interaction. Analysis of the pure bending (ν2) structure by a perturbation approach including R-T, anharmonicity, spin-orbit (SO), and Herzberg-Teller (H-T) interactions indicated considerably different spin splitting for the μ and κ levels of the ˜X 2Π state of SiCN, in contrast to identical spin splitting for general species derived from the perturbation approach, where μ and κ specify the lower and upper levels, respectively, separated by R-T. Further analysis of the vibrational structure including R-T, anharmonicity, SO, H-T, Fermi, and Sears interactions was carried out via a direct diagonalization procedure, where Sears resonance is a second-order interaction combined from SO and H-T interactions with ΔK = ±1, ΔΣ = ∓1, and ΔP = 0, and where P is a quantum number, P = K + Σ. The later numerical analysis reproduced the observed structure, not only the pure ν2 structure but also the combination structure of the ν2 and the Si–CN stretching (ν3) modes. As an example, the analysis demonstrates Sears resonance between vibronic levels, (0110) κ Σ(+) and (0200) μ Π12, with ΔK = ±1 and ΔP = 0. On the basis of coefficients of their eigen vectors derived from the numerical analysis, it is interpreted as an almost one-to-one mixing between the two levels. The mixing coefficients of the two vibronic levels agree with those obtained from computational studies. The numerical analysis also indicates that some of the vibronic levels show chaotic characteristics in view of the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator (2D-HO) basis which is used as the basis function in the present numerical analysis; i.e., the eigen vectors for some of the observed levels have several components of the basis, and we have not been able to give precise vibronic assignments for the levels, but just vibronically labeled, referring the largest component in their vectors. (To emphasize this situation, we do not use the word “assignment,” but prefer to use “label” as the meaning of just “label,” but not “assign,” throughout this paper.) The latter shows that the vibronic labels of the levels are meaningless, and the P quantum number and the order of their eigen states in the P matrix block derived in the numerical analysis only characterize the vibronic levels. Comparing the constants obtained for all of the interactions with those of species showing Sears resonance and studied previously, it is found that none of them are strong, but are moderate. It is thus concluded that the chaotic appearance is not derived by any strong interaction, but is induced by complex and accidental proximities of the vibronic levels caused by the moderate interactions.     United States Cultural Property Policy and Occupied Japan : the Role of American Experts from the Roberts Commission to the Arts and Monuments Division

    application/pdfEven before the American Occupation of Japan (1945-1952) was official, an internal telegram to the then U.S. Secretary of War had outlined its overarching policy for the protection of the defeated enemy’s cultural property. By October 1945 a cluster of American scholars and experts were already in Tokyo, later coalescing into the Arts and Monuments Division of the Civil Information and Education Section, at the General Headquarters of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. Initially led by George L. Stout, a Harvard curator known for his work to salvage cultural treasures on the European war front, the group quietly spearheaded an orderly effort to revive or establish protective measures and laws for Japan’s cultural property. That this could be done amidst so many other pressing priorities was remarkable but not surprising, the consequence of early and far-sighted work by American scholars and policy planners started already in 1940. From the Harvard Group, the American Council of Learned Societies, and especially the American Commission for the Protection and Salvage of Artistic and Historic Monuments in War Areas (The Roberts Commission), a long and systemic preparation for the post-war period could thus lead to a meaningful and credible cultural policy under the Occupation.journal articl
