Words that Cause Word Order Differences in English-Japanese Translation: Words, their Parts of Speech, and their Functions in Sentence Patterns
application/pdfThe first half of this article focuses first on Zipf’s law, which suggests the existence of a small number of high frequency words and a large number of low frequency words in a vocabulary, and second on the development of the concepts of “parts of speech” and “sentence patterns” in the English language. The latter half of this article analyzes a nineteenth-century English self-study book, which has interlinear word-for-word Japanese translation with numbers indicating the order for translating English words into Japanese words. A simple computer script for the data analysis software called “R” was written to analyze the book. The results indicate that words closely related to word order differences have more high frequency elements than those not closely related to word order differences, and that the two types of words share most of the parts of speech and the functions in sentence patterns although the two types of words show different frequencies in terms of the parts of speech and the functions in sentence patterns.journal articl
