A Comparative Study of Disposition Related Vocabulary in Chinese and Japanese
Get PDFapplication/pdfThis study is a comparative examination of the phrase ‘good at communication’ in Chinese and Japanese, and has two significant findings.
Firstly, the results indicate that the Chinese language may have a greater amount of vocabulary and vocabulary production than Japanese, as well as a more varied vocabulary.
Secondly, although “good at communication” would seem a positive evaluation, the data in this study shows that it is also associated with a considerable number of negative evaluative phrases in both Chinese and Japanese, most notably in Chinese. This may indicate both the negation principle within both Chinese and Japanese cultures, and that
being “good at communication” may not always play an important role in interpersonal relations in these two cultures.journal articl

South Korea’s Perception of North Korea and Taiwan’s Perception of Mainland China : Comparing Correspondences between Domestic Cleavages and Perception of the Divided Parts
Get PDFapplication/pdfSouth Korea and Taiwan achieved salient economic growth and outstanding democratic transition which have attracted attention of many scholars as well as policy makers around East Asia. At the same time,there have been contrasts in the development of these nations' relations with the other parts of the divided nations, North Korea and Mainland China, since the late 1990s.
South Korea’s progressives set forth cooperation called “the Sunshine Policy” toward the North, on the other hand conservatives bore conflict against it. In contrast, Taiwan’s progressives advocated for Taiwan’s independence withstanding mainland China’s hostility, whereas conservatives managed cooperation and exchanges based on “the 1992 Consensus” despite domestic controversy over its existence.
The paper traces the process of national division, civil war or war, democratization, and the end of the cold war, and compares development and changes in political actors’ perception of each South Korea and Taiwan to illustrate contrasts between Inter-Korean and Cross-Strait relations.journal articl

Service Quality and Strategic Behaviors of Non-profits and For-profits in the Quasi-Market : The Case of Long-Term Care Group Home Services
No full textapplication/pdfThis paper examines the differences in behaviors between nonprofit providers and for-profit providers of Long-Term Care Services (LTCS) for the elderly in Japan by analyzing whether providers compromise on quality and engage in strategies to maximize profits. The quasi-market was introduced to improve the efficiency of the former public welfare service, which was limited to serving the public and nonprofit organizations. However, there is considerable doubt about LTCS’s ability to balance the market mechanism with the fairness or equality of public services.
Therefore, I examine the possibility of service quality compromises and the tendency toward strategic behaviors, e.g., the selection of users and service locations, economies of scale, and economies of scope. The results indicate the service quality of nonprofit providers may be better than that of for-profit providers. For-profit providers also seem to select profitable users and service locations and seek the scale and scope of economies more positively than nonprofit providers.journal articl
CTBT : Legal Questions Arising from Its Non–Entry into Force Revisited
Get PDFapplication/pdfProhibition of testing of nuclear weapons has been considered an effective measure of the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation because it constrains the development and qualitative improvement of nuclear weapons and also ends the development of testing advanced new types of nuclear weapons. Therefore, the international community has prioritised prohibition as part of their agenda in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, for which the Partial Test Ban Treaty (PTBT) and then Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) were egotiated and agreed for this purpose.
Although the CTBT was considered as an important element for the nuclear
disarmament and non-proliferation, the CTBT cannot enter into force even after 20 years since its adoption by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In this situation, this article examines current legal status of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Preparatory Commission (CTBTO PrepCom), whether it can be an international organisation. This article further examines possibility of provisional application of the CTBT and the provisional operation of the CTBT verification regime in pursuit for the realisation of its object and purpose before entry into force.
Then this article concludes that, even before the CTBT’s entry into force, the provisional application of the CTBT is feasible as some part of the CTBT verification regime, which is operated provisionally by the CTBTO PrepCom, within the competence conferred by PrepCom Text and that it is an only option during the CTBT’s non–entry into force, which is expected to be long, without additional 'agreement’ by States Signatories.journal articl
