Propaganda in Popular Japanese Songs in Manchuria
Get PDFapplication/pdfAs is well known, Manchukuo (1932-1945) is said to be a "puppet" state born in northeastern China ruled (controlled) by Japan. In order to establish the legitimacy of the Manchukuo administration not only within the territory, but also in Japan and other parts of East Asia, Manchukuo government authorities were eager to propagate copious amounts of visual media such as posters, postcards, stamps, and movies produced by Japanese authorities. In regards to this propaganda media, little scholarship has focused on popular songs about Manchukuo. Although there is already much research on Manchukuo both in Japan and China, the majority of such research focuses on Manchukuo movies and Li Xianglan (Yamaguchi Yoshiko), one of the top stars in Manchurian films. This paper focuses on popular Japanese-language songs based on Manchuria and their role to establish the legitimacy of the Manchukuo regime among Japanese expatriates and residents of other ethnicities in Manchuria who somewhat understood basic Japanese and how those songs contributed to Manchukuo propaganda.journal articl
