Investigation of the Syntactic Function of [te21] in the Chengdu Dialect

    Get PDF
application/pdfIn Chinese, a morpheme has various syntactic functions and can represent various meanings. [te21] in the Chengdu dialect is one of them. [te21] can be used as an auxiliary verb before a verb, and as a postpositional particle after a verb. It also can be used as a modal particle at the end of a sentence, and has a syntactic function as a verb. In this paper, I examine [te21] of the Chengdu dialect to clarify its syntactic function. Also, its meaning and grammatical usage are examined in contrast with Putonghua (Standard Mandarin).journal articl

Revisiting a Nearest Neighbor Method for Shape Classification

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe nearest neighbor method is a simple and flexiblescheme for the classification of data points in a vector space. It predictsa class label of an unseen data point using a majority rule for the labels ofknown data points inside a neighborhood of the unseen data point. Becauseit sometimes achieves good performance even for complicated problems, several derivatives of it have been studied. Among them, the discriminantadaptive nearest neighbor method is particularly worth revisiting to demon-strate its application. The main idea of this method is to adjust the neigh-bor metric of an unseen data point to the set of known data points beforelabel prediction. It often improves the prediction, provided the neighbormetric is adjusted well. For statistical shape analysis, shape classificationattracts attention because it is a vital topic in shape analysis. However, be-cause a shape is generally expressed as a matrix, it is non-trivial to applythe discriminant adaptive nearest neighbor method to shape classification. Thus, in this study, we develop the discriminant adaptive nearest neighbormethod to make it slightly more useful in shape classification. To achievethis development, a mixture model and optimization algorithm for shapeclustering are incorporated into the method. Furthermore, we describe sev-eral helpful techniques for the initial guess of the model parameters in theoptimization algorithm. Using several shape datasets, we demonstrated thatour method is successful for shape classification.journal articl

Effect of Interlocutors’ Discourse Strategies on Language Mixing by Japanese- Arabic Bilingual Children : An Examination of the Parental Discourse Hypothesisx

    Get PDF
application/pdfLanguage mixing is a linguistic phenomenon often seen in children who grow up in a bilingual environment. A considerable number of studies on this phenomenon have already been published. However, the actual reasons why bilingual children use language mixing, and the role played by the interlocutors’ discourse strategies, are still controversial. The main purpose of this article is to examine the relationship between the strategies adopted by adult interlocutors when they react to children’s language mixing, on the one hand, and the children’s ways of responding to these interventions, on the other, with the aim to test the validity of the Parental Discourse Hypothesis (Lanza 1992). The participants in this study were four Arabic-Japanese bilingual children (siblings) all of whom acquired their Japanese language ability at the Japanese nursery they attended. The data was collected before all of the children entered elementary school. The parents of the children are Arabic native speakers; the father is also fluent in Japanese. All other Japanese interlocutors were native speakers. The analysis of the data shows that, with the exception of the Minimal Grasp strategy, there is a correlation between the interlocutors’ discourse strategies and the children’s overall rate of language mixing. However, a more detailed analysis of the children’s language use (Arabic, Japanese, or Language mixing) in response to their interlocutors’ discourse strategies shows results that do not match the assertions of the Parental Discourse Hypothesis.journal articl

Formulation of “Kyoin Ikusei Shihyo” in Japan : Practice and Problems

    Get PDF
application/pdfIn 2015, a report On Improving the Quality and Ability of Teachers in Charge of Future School Education was published by the Central Educational Council in Japan. And “Kyoin Ikusei Shihyo”, which means standards for the professional development of teachers, was proposed in the report. In response to an initiative in the report, the Law for Special Regulations Concerning Educational Public Service Personnel was revised in 2016. And formulation of “Kyoin Ikusei Shihyo” was stipulated by the law. This paper investigates the following questions: 1) What is “Kyoin Ikusei Shihyo” ? 2) How is “Kyoin Ikusei Shihyo” formulated in practice? 3) What are the significance and problems of “Kyoin Ikusei Shihyo” ?本論文は、平成29・30・令和元・2年度科学研究費補助金「基盤研究(C)」(課題番号17K04567、研究代表者 赤星晋作)による研究成果の一部である。journal articl

Population Migration in Hiroshima Prefecture before World War II : Analysis by national census and notification of residence

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe purpose of this paper is to investigate characteristics of the migration in Hiroshima Prefecture before World War II using data from the national census and kiryu-todoke (notification of residence) from the villages of Yamano and Miwa in Hiroshima Prefecture. Kiryu-todoke records include significant data such as migrant's destinations, dates, birthdates and occupations. The main points of this paper are as follows. First, before the Second World War, Hiroshima Prefecture was a population outflow prefecture. However, many people came from various areas to Kure city, which grew rapidly because of its importance to the navy. Second, both Yamano and Miwa are villages in Hiroshima Prefecture, but there was a considerable difference in the destinations of the migrants from these villages. About 40% of the migrants from Miwa went to the coal mining areas of Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Yamaguchi prefectures, and 14% went to Hiroshima city. On the other hand, Yamano's migrants went to a wider range of areas such as neighboring counties, cities in Hiroshima Prefecture, Okayama city, and Osaka city. Third, before World War I, most migrants from Yamano went to neighboring villages and towns. After World War I, many people left Yamano for distant big cities such as Osaka and Tokyo. The majority of the migrants were teenagers.journal articl

Generation of facial animations to express suppressed positive emotion using action units

    Get PDF
application/pdfExpressing emotion is important for communication on the Internet, and some avatars can express their facial expressions. However, it is difficult to create facial animations of an avatar to express complicated emotional states (e.g. happy but embarrassed) for non-expert creators because there is no formulated method proved scientifically. This paper proposes a method to create facial animations to express “suppressed positive emotion” so called “Tsundere” by using combination of action units. In order to apply two types of suppression methods, “neutralized” and “masked,” the action units are chosen by considering “suppressing or suppressed emotion” and “controllable or uncontrollable unit.” 18 facial animations are created and evaluated by Sheffé’s method. As a result, a combination of slight-happy action units and blushing and that of angershaped eyebrows and blushing were the most effective to express “suppressed positive emotion.”2019年度(第33回):2019年6月4日-6月7日:新潟県新潟市(朱鷺メッセ新潟コンベンションセンター) 4Rin1-14 本研究の一部は国立研究開発法人科学技術振興機構(JST)の研究成果展開事業「センター・オブ・イノベーション(COI)プログラム」の支援によって行われているconference pape
