Learning the History of Hesaka from “Geihantsushi”
Get PDFThis paper presents an example of a method for studying local history, with a focus on the Edo-period Hesaka area in Hiroshima. It discusses the insights that can be gained from “Geihantsushi,” a geographical survey of the Hiroshima domain. The old Sanyodo (the ancient Sanyo road) passed through Hesaka, and at Hesaka, the Sanyodo crossed the Ota River and passed through to the west. Thus, it can be said that Hesaka has been a kind of hub in terms of transportation since ancient times. When considering the development of Hesaka, the Ota River cannot be ignored. As the course of the Ota River changed, the shrine area of Kurumegi Shrine also changed. Kurumegi Shrine was the guardian deity of Hesaka, Higashihara and Nishihara. However, Higashihara and Nishihara were eventually separated due to the change in the flow of the Ota River and they are now on the opposite bank of the Ota River. As Hesaka developed, the Miyake Shrine was built, and Hesaka was divided into two shrine areas, one in the east and one in the west.
