A Vocabulary Analysis of the Personal Statement Section of Japanese Job Application Forms Written by International Students
This study aims to identify essential vocabulary for writing the personal statement section of Japanese job application forms, with particular focus on the “self-PR” and “Gakuchika” (experiences students devoted significant
effort to during their school years). Data were collected from 53 international students with advanced Japanese proficiency, and 43 of them also provided Gakuchika responses. These texts were segmented into morphemes and
analyzed using KH Coder.
Three vocabulary lists were created based on the analysis. The first list contains frequently used basic vocabulary for the personal statement section of job application forms found in the final drafts. Although there were
very few words with a high level of difficulty, some words specific to job hunting were included. The second list was created for words that students struggled to produce independently - these appeared only in the final draft and not in the first draft. It predominately includes proper nouns, loanwords and compounds not typically covered in Japanese language education. The third list categorizes vocabulary by specific scenarios to support students in expressing their experiences more effectively. These lists are intended for both classroom instruction and self-study
