THE TRANSLATION OF POLITICAL DISCOURSE IN DAILY ONLINE NEWSPAPERS IN KOSOVA: WITH A FOCUS OF WAR IN UKRAINE
Gjikolli, Master ThesisThis study investigates the complexities of journalistic translation in the context of political discourse, focusing on English-to-Albanian translations of war-related articles about the Ukraine conflict. Grounded in Skopos Theory, the research analyzes eight translated headlines from international online newspapers to evaluate accuracy, cultural adaptation, and translational strategies. A mixed-methods approach combines textual analysis of translated headlines, such as "G7 leaders condemn Putin for attacking Ukraine" and "North Korean troops in Kursk a ‘significant escalation’", with insights from a former translator’s professional experience and literature on journalistic translation challenges. Findings reveal recurring difficulties in: preserving rhetorical force in politically charged statements, balancing fidelity to source texts with target-audience readability, and handling culturally loaded terms. The study contributes to translation theory by refining Skopos principles for crisis reporting, demonstrating how translators prioritize audience impact over literal accuracy. Practical recommendations include: adopting hybrid human-machine workflows for time-sensitive content, developing glossaries for conflict-related terminology, and training translators in political discourse analysis. Limitations include the narrow focus on headlines and the Albanian context, suggesting future research on full-text translations across languages. Ultimately, this research underscores journalistic translation’s pivotal role in shaping international perceptions of war

Theodor W. Adorno’s Criticism of the German Concept of Bildung
The question of how to conduct oneself in the world is arguably as old as mankind itself. Ancient Greek philosophy, namely the sophists, identified a problem which shaped the world since it was first articulated – the negotiation of internal truth and external application. While neither can truly guide one’s way – epistemological relativism and ethical utilitarianism await at the extrema – dialogue of all kinds seems to be a way to prevent the drift and shift towards these extremes. After having framed the philosophical problem, this paper will exemplarily examine Germany’s concept of Bildung with regard to these extremes. The analysis will focus on the end of the 19th century (fin-de-siècle) as this has been the phase of Bildung which can, at least in part, be held accountable for the horrors of the 20th century. Bildung was and still is a central aspect of German culture and has been the matter of analysis and discussion ever since. One of the most potent criticisms has been uttered by Theodor W. Adorno who analyzed Bildung after the Second World War and exemplarily outlined traits of fascist societies. However, Adorno was also influenced by the zeitgeist and did not grasp the problem at the deepest possible level of analysis. Based on but not limited to the intellectual accounts of Theodor W. Adorno, it will be tried to identify commonalities among totalitarian systems and reconnect these with the aforementioned philosophical problem of ethical utilitarianism and epistemological relativism
Lexical and Grammatical Interference in Translation from Albanian into English
This study aims to investigate lexical and grammatical interference in translation from Albanian into English. The study raised the questions: To what extent students rely on their mother tongue when learning a foreign language grammar? In which cases does mother tongue interfere in translation from first into a foreign language? To reach the objective of the study and answer these questions, the research examined students’ errors in translated sentences from Albanian into English. Results demonstrated that the problems that occur from interference are lexical and grammatical. The results also proved that these kinds of interference occur as a result of students’ lack of knowledge of the source and target languages. For the purposes of this study it was designed a translation test and it was used with students whose native language is Albanian. The aim is to show that native language interferes to a high extent in learning L2 grammar, especially when the two grammars differ in structure
Face masks in education: The cases of Greece and Singapore
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, governments across the world implemented practices and rules related to masks in educational settings and beyond. Through a desktop analysis and systematic literature review, leveraging educational, governmental and journalistic sources, this article provides an extreme comparison of two nations’ intra-period responses on the use of face masks in education. Taking the examples of two different countries (Greece and Singapore), we discuss their contrasting approaches to face mask use in education, ranging from pre-schools to universities, while taking into account the macroenvironmental dissimilarities of their educational systems and technological capabilities. There are significant opportunities to learn by examining the governmental, pedagogical, and community reactions of different countries about mask use, in order to strengthen educators’ collective response to COVID-19 now and into the future. These various threads could then be pulled back together in a discussion across borders
Zhuangzi: The Complete Writings
This brief article is a review of Zhuangzi: The Complete Writings, which was published in March of the last year by Hackett Publishing. Subsequent to a concise explanation about the contextual circumstances in which the new and full translation of the ancient Chinese text ought to be perused, I, in order to give an instance of its possibility, pointed out that one of its famous passages could be interpreted as an allegorical vignette that symbolically but straightforwardly communicates the same truth which contemporary French philosopher Quentin Meillassoux has proved, i.e., that the primordial principle framing the whole world is contingency
Expectations, challenges and achievements of primary school teachers during their first year of work, in Kosovo
The first year of work in the teaching profession is characterized by many dynamics, which can be best understood by the voices of the teachers themselves who have passed the first year of work. This qualitative research conducted through semi-structured interviews with 10 primary school teachers, from different places of Kosovo, reflects the expectations, challenges and achievements that they have experienced throughout their first year of work. The findings show that the teachers have had expectations to be supported, to be given help and cooperation from their colleagues, school board and from the parents and students. They have expected from their students to be polite, committed to lessons and disciplined. There is a difference between the expectations and the reality that these teachers have faced. Teachers have experienced many challenges during the period of the first year of work, difficulties in building relationships of cooperation and understanding with the school leadership, parents of students, classroom and student management but also achievements in relation to these
Unmasking the Exception: Covid and the Creation of Enemy in India
In the contemporary political context, a state of exception refers to the ways by which the major liberal democracies are driven by the growing accretion of discriminatory executive power, increasingly evading existing legislative and juridical institutions. Italian thinker Giorgio Agamben’s work becomes more relevant here. Agamben theorizes the state of exception and claims that it has become a dominant paradigm of government in contemporary politics. Agamben challenges the responses the state had while immediately dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, which is merely normalizing the state of exception as it actually produced a policification of the municipalities and areas in the guise of tackling the virus. The Indian state like others has upholded the concept of lockdown as the only measure to fight the pandemic but the interesting aspect is the designing of enemies to deal with the problem. The paper argues that the Indian state has used the pandemic to blatantly create the “other” in a way pursued the agenda of exception. The method is qualitative, especially focusing on discourse analysis. The conclusion demonstrates that the measures taken by apparently the largest democracy in the name of fighting Covid establishes Agamben’s argument that the world is transforming into a gigantic concentration camp
