Alcazarquivir y los límites de la osadía: la “Canción I” (Algunas obras, 1582) de Fernando de Herrera
This article examines how Herrera adapts the metaphorical system of Algunas obras to deal not only with gallant themes, but also with the heroic subject matter proper to the epic and, according to him, also to the canción. After recalling the critical approaches to the theme of daring in Herrera, which have concentrated on love poetry and its metaliterary echoes, we turn to the question of Herrera’s epic. To do so, we will examine both the traces of his epics (frustrated or lost) and, above all, his eagerness to elevate lyric poetry to a higher status, as perceived in his war-themed songs. The texts we have chosen to analyze date from after the 1570s, the decade in which the event in question took place: the defeat of Alcazarquivir (1578). This battle is the subject of several poems that we will examine in detail: the «Canción I», printed in Algunas obras (1582) and in Versos (1619), and five sonnets, four from Versos and one from Algunas obras. In these texts, we will study how Herrera employs the semantic field of daring, mixed with references to pride and some biblical echoes, in order to exalt the past and future victories of the Hispanic Monarchy and to elevate its stature to levels worthy of the subject.tru

This thesis examines the evolution of the practices and decision-making processes of the United Nations Security Council’s sanctions committees. These subsidiary organs, entrusted by the Security Council with monitoring and verifying the implementation of measures under Article 41 of the UN Charter, have significantly transformed their mandates and working methods since their inception.
Drawing on confidential UN archives, official documents, and existing scholarship, this study analyses core trends in the changing structure, functioning, and activities of the sanctions committees. It reveals a progressive informalisation of decision-making processes, as well as a gradual outsourcing of responsibilities to other subsidiary organs, such as expert groups or the Ombudsperson’s office. This transformation unfolds against a backdrop marked by the advent of targeted sanctions in the 1990s, more recent tensions among Permanent Members of the Security Council, and a shifting international architecture.
In conclusion, the thesis proposes reforms aimed at enhancing the committees’ effectiveness, transparency, and legitimacy. It advocates for better integration of their technical and political dimensions to ensure that these organs maintain a central role as a key policy instrument of the UN Security Council to maintain and restore international peace and security
Transformative social innovation in, of and by the city: Beyond mission-driven policy rationales
Transformative social innovation policy encompasses more than the idea that policy defines directions about the expected outcomes of innovation. It also promotes new forms of governance and rationales based on more intersectional and decentralized processes of innovation. Such policy has thus to be studied primarily as a perpetual process of redefinition, rather than as an end in itself to achieve societal missions. Through an examination of the ‘G’innove’ _program implemented by the City of Geneva, we explore how a new social innovation policy can stimulate new types of innovation projects in the city, how these projects can change the established policy rationales of the city, and how innovation policy and policy innovation intertwine in the transformation of society by the city. Beyond this exemplary policy, we attempt to propose complementarities between transformations in, of and by the city in order to promote new policy agendas and rethink their underlying rationales.tru

ASBAR: an Animal Skeleton-Based Action Recognition framework. Recognizing great ape behaviors in the wild using pose estimation with domain adaptation
To date, the investigation and classification of animal behaviors have mostly relied on direct human observations or video recordings with posthoc analysis, which can be labor-intensive, time-consuming, and prone to human bias. Recent advances in machine learning for computer vision tasks, such as pose estimation and action recognition, thus have the potential to significantly improve and deepen our understanding of animal behavior. However, despite the increased availability of open-source toolboxes and large-scale datasets for animal pose estimation, their practical relevance for behavior recognition remains under-explored. In this paper, we propose an innovative framework, ASBAR, for Animal Skeleton-Based Action Recognition, which fully integrates animal pose estimation and behavior recognition. We demonstrate the use of this framework in a particularly challenging task: the classification of great ape natural behaviors in the wild. First, we built a robust pose estimator model leveraging OpenMonkeyChallenge, one of the largest available open-source primate pose datasets, through a benchmark analysis on several CNN models from DeepLabCut, integrated into our framework. Second, we extracted the great ape’s skeletal motion from the PanAf dataset, a large collection of in-the-wild videos of gorillas and chimpanzees annotated for natural behaviors, which we used to train and evaluate PoseConv3D from MMaction2, a second deep learning model fully integrated into our framework. We hereby classify behaviors into nine distinct categories and achieve a Top 1 accuracy of 74.98%, comparable to previous studies using video-based methods, while reducing the model’s input size by a factor of around 20. Additionally, we provide an open-source terminal-based GUI that integrates our full pipeline and release a set of 5,440 keypoint annotations to facilitate the replication of our results on other species and/or behaviors. Beyond Procedural Ethics A four-level architecture of research ethics in qualitative research
Qualitative research raises original ethical questions, strongly connected with epistemological and methodological issues. This chapter will first introduce the limits of procedural ethics and briefly present four attempts to overcome them. In so doing, we will a) argue that procedural ethics, with its focus on compliance with rules, is insufficient to meet the ethical issues of qualitative research in practice and b) suggest that a dialogical epistemology offers resources to expand ethics in qualitative research. We will then introduce an integrated, multilevel perspective on research ethics, suggesting questions to foster ethical research practice. We will conclude by discussing how to better support ethical research practice within academia. We will argue that it may be unethical to let researchers face the difficult ethical dilemmas of fieldwork alone, caught between constraining rules and real-time decisions, and suggest offering (and continuously developing) collective and institutional resources to support individual researchers and research teams in their reflections and actions.tru
