Governing poverty and migration in European nation-states – keywords revisited
This article introduces a collaborative publication exploring the intricate interplay between poverty governance, migration control, and welfare provision. Adopting a ‘keywords’ approach, we investigate the terminology and concepts around which academic discussions revolve when addressing poverty and migration. Central to this examination is the figure of the ‘poor migrant’, whose experiences of inclusion and exclusion intersect along lines of race, gender, and legal status. Using an intersectional lens, the publication dissects key terms and concepts : Welfare State, Welfare Governance, Citizenship, Solidarity and Deservingness, Suspicion and Surveillance, Discipline, and Banishment. We thus aim to conceptualise and critically discuss the constant renegotiation of state power and the nation-state induced in ex/inclusionary aspects of welfare and migration policies and law. The contribution reveals how notions of belonging shape access to rights and services, particularly along racialized and classist lines. Moreover, it explores how migration policies exacerbate scrutiny and exclusion faced by non-citizen populations within contemporary welfare systems. tru
Roadmap towards the redefinition of the second
This paper outlines the roadmap towards the redefinition of the second, which was recently updated by the CCTF Task Force created by the CCTF in 2020. The main achievements of optical frequency standards (OFS) call for reflection on the redefinition of the second, but open new challenges related to the performance of the OFS, their contribution to time scales and UTC, the possibility of their comparison, and the knowledge of the Earth's gravitational potential to ensure a robust and accurate capacity to realize a new definition at the level of 10−18 uncertainty. The mandatory criteria to be achieved before redefinition have been defined and their current fulfilment level is estimated showing the fields that still needed improvement. The possibility to base the redefinition on a single or on a set of transitions has also been evaluated. The roadmap indicates the steps to be followed in the next years to be ready for a sound and successful redefinition
This article examines how a famous sonnet by Góngora combines topics present in Tasso and Virgil (the snake in the grass, Eclogues, III, 93) with the image of the golden cup, sym-bol of temptation that stems from the Apocalypsis and that our letters relate to poison since fray Luis de León’s “Oda IX” (“Las Serenas”). After examining fray Luis’ poem, its classical inspiration, and uses of the topic in Lope de Vega, Barrionuevo, and Calderón, we study it in the Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea (vv. 281-288) and three sonnets by Góngora: “La dulce boca que a gustar combida», “¡Oh, niebla del estado más sereno!”, and “En el cristal de tu divina mano”.tru

Artifactual Functions: A Dual, Realizable-Based View
In this paper we provide an ontological analysis of so-called “artifactual functions” by deploying a realizable-centered approach to artifacts which we have recently developed within the framework of the upper ontology Basic Formal Ontology (BFO). We argue that, insofar as material artifacts are concerned, the term “artifactual function” can refer to at least two kinds of realizable entities: novel intentional dispositions and usefactual realized entities. They inhere, respectively, in what we previously called “canonical artifacts” and “usefacts”. We show how this approach can help to clarify functions in BFO, whose current elucidation includes reference to the term “artifact”. In our framework, having an artifactual function implies being an artifact, but not vice versa; in other words, there are artifacts that lack an artifactual function.tru
A cold-atom Ramsey clock with a low volume physics package
We demonstrate a Ramsey-type microwave clock interrogating the 6.835~GHz ground-state transition in cold \textsuperscript{87}Rb atoms loaded from a grating magneto-optical trap (GMOT) enclosed in an additively manufactured loop-gap resonator microwave cavity. A short-term stability of 1.5×10−11~τ−1/2 is demonstrated, in reasonable agreement with predictions from the signal-to-noise ratio of the measured Ramsey fringes. The cavity-grating package has a volume of ≈67~cm\textsuperscript{3}, ensuring an inherently compact system while the use of a GMOT drastically simplifies the optical requirements for laser cooled atoms. This work is another step towards the realisation of highly compact portable cold-atom frequency standards
This article examines how Fernando de Herrera adopted in his lyrical poetry a model that he commented in Garcilaso de la Vega's sonnet XXXIII and that he forged or at least contributed to consolidate in his Anotaciones a la poesía de Garcilaso (1580). We review what critics understand as ruins poetry in Golden Age poetry in general and in Herrera's production in particular, after which we propose adapting Herrera's corpus: in the first place, we propose to define it more precisely, reducing it in order to clarify what inspired Herrera, how he understood ruins poetry, and how he adapted it in different genres and stages of his career; in the second place, we propose to largen it metaphorically in order to analyze what moved Herrera to export to other contexts a system that he decisively contributed to shape
Exploring substitution random functions composed of stationary multi-Gaussian processes
Simulation of random felds is widely used in Earth sciences for modeling and uncertainty quantifcation. The spatial features of these felds may have a strong impact on the forecasts made using these felds. For instance, in fow and transport problems the connectivity of the permeability felds is a crucial aspect. Multi-Gaussian random felds are the most common tools to analyze and model continuous felds. Their spatial correlation structure is described by a covariance or variogram model.
However, these types of spatial models are unable to represent highly or poorly connected structures even if a broad range of covariance models can be employed. With this type of model, the regions with values close to the mean are always well connected whereas the regions of low or high values are isolated. Substitution random functions (SRFs) belong to another broad class of random functions that are more fexible. SRFs are constructed by composing (Z = Y◦T) two stochastic processes: the directing function T (latent feld) and the coding process Y (modifying the latent feld in a stochastic manner). In this paper, we study the properties of SRFs obtained by combining stationary multi-Gaussian random felds for both T and Y with bounded variograms. The resulting SRFs Z are stationary, but as T has a fnite variance Z is not ergodic for the mean and the covariance. This means that single realizations behave diferently from each other. We propose a simple technique to control which values (low, intermediate, or high) are connected. It consists of adding a control point on the process Y to guide every single realization. The conditioning to local values is obtained using a Gibbs sampler
