The Search for Information and the Net Generation
No full textSupporters of the Net Generation theory claim that children born after 1985 have an in-depth grasp and almost ‘intuitive’ knowledge of how to use technology, simply because they have never known a world without the Internet and technological change. This theory contradicts traditional information theory which contends that information-seeking behaviour is a complex activity that is affected by cultural, educational and social contexts. Anecdotal evidence from schools and public libraries has long suggested that while young people actively use technology, they do not use it as described by the Net generation theorists. In recent years there has been an emerging body of research on the Net Generation that largely debunks the myth of an intuitive user who is capable of using electronic resources to find information, a fact many teacher librarians have long suspected. The Study of Reading Blog in High School Library: Using Taipei Municipal Cheng Yuan High School as an Example
No full textBlog is one of a new method of information circulation and the popular internet application at the present. There is a marvelous increase in blog numbers and users around the world. Many school libraries use this new technology to publicize new resources, services, or events. The purpose of this study is to build a reading blog in high school library and design a series of purposive reading activities, and then, using ‘the Unified Theory of Acceptance and use of Technology’ (known as ‘UTAUT’) to explore the students’ acceptance after implement this plan. The research contributes to construct reading blogs in high school and design a series of purposive reading activities to foster students’ interest in reading and discuss on this blog. Results of the evaluation will be used as the basis of further development
A Study on Inquiry-based Learning in a Primary School through Librarian-Teacher Partnerships
No full textThis case study investigates into the role of the school librarians and their collaboration with other subject teachers in guiding primary four (P4) students through inquiry-based learning (IBL) group projects. To maximize the learning supports that students can get from doing the projects, the researchers of this study promote a close partnership between the school librarian and three other kinds of teachers (General Studies, Chinese, and Information Technology / IT) who can contribute to P4 General Studies’ group projects. The study tries to understand: (1). the effectiveness of the librarian-teacher partnership approach in helping students to learn from their project works, and (2). the issues and challenges encountered by students and teachers in the process of implementing such teaching and learning model
A Training Course for Guizhou Teachers for the Establishment of Schools Libraries: Experience Sharing
No full textIn the past two decades, under the economic reform, in The Mainland China, the annual economic growth(GDP) is more than 10%, but in general ,in the western part of China most of the people are lived in poverty and uneducated. As a result, there are lots voluntary and charitable agencies in Hong Kong which help the Chinese people to get rib of poverty and let the kids in the villages receive education. They support the rural area to build schools and set up school libraries in order to enhence the educational standard in the rural area. In December, 2006, the Hong Kong Teacher-librarians’ Association was invited by the JIAN XING CHARITABLE FOUNDATION LIMITED, one of the charitable agencies to organise a four and a half days training course for the school teachers in Guizhou province, who will be responsiblefor the operation of the school libraries in future. With the help of the Jiangsu provinces Mr. Cheung Jing Wo, the course was successfully helded in Jin Sha of the Guizhou province
Research on Improving Teaching Qualities by Using Metadata to Recognize Plants
No full textMetadata plays a vital role in the development and implementation of the National Digital Archives Program (NDAP). We’re now developing an online database for teaching plant recognition, providing students and other users with an access to recognizing all plants possible. While digitalizing the above-mentioned database, this study focuses on “subject and community oriented” metadata kernel set. By using the exact searching and result revealing interface over the same data as well as cross-database retrieval, we aim at uttering convenience and user-friendliness. In view of the ever-increasing data and the need for future integration, we’ve tried to analyze the content and features of possible plants, made comparisons over various metadata standards, constructed a user-friendly database system and designed the plant-related metadata in the dedication of research references at home and abroad. The assistant learning mechanism of this interactive digital archive includes two vital aspects. They are, respectively, student-learning circulation and database-learning circulation, which are worth developing into further application on teaching. Learners of all levels are able to use the system freely and spontaneously. For the exchange of the digital archives, this study constructs a Chinese metadata format and integrates XML technique in the hope of helping students retrieve their data precisely, acquire an integrated concept of plants and learn to appreciate and cherish all plants in their campus.

Creating A Reader-based Digital Gallery: A Case Study on NEHS Library
No full textSchool libraries are knowledge centers and platforms for teachers and students in campuses. Readers can be resource takers also producers under the implement of school knowledge management strategy. The NEHS library created a reader-based digital gallery to catch readers’ eye ,to inspire their participation , trying to make a Library 2.0 platform for 3000 k-to-12th readers, to make them not only readers but also writers, not only resource takers but also producers and sharers. Action Research is the approach to practice with for 2 years. Changes happened to readers. Precise evidence and criteria need more efforts and further research
Work and Progress Together to Create a Reading Paradise for High Schools: Remarks of Retrospection and Prospects of "Senior High School Library Guidance Committee (SHSLGC)
No full textDuring 1990s, traditional senior high school education encountered challenges of social transitions, information explosion while entering a learning-oriented society. Educational reforms and policies were conducted and enforced nation-wide. School libraries was situated in a turning edge to cope with the education reforms. Two major projects have impacted heavily on the development of high school (including vocational high schools) librarianship. One was the subsidy for collection development from the Ministry of Education that enriched the high schools’ library holdings, the other one was the establishment of “The Senior High School Library Guidance Committee (SHSLGC)”. SHSLGC consists of scholars of Library and Information Science Education, educational administrators, and selected high school library directors. The SHSGC Team started consulting jobs by selecting high school libraries as demonstrative models in different regions of the Island, conducting library symposiums, having published “The Handbook for Senior High School Libraries”, hosting forums for high school principals and chief librarians, establishing professional courses for chief librarians, and paying on-site visits to high school libraries around the Island. The on-site visits created inter-library cooperation and exchange of professional experiences among high schools and vocational high schools.
Efforts continued and when the “ Library Law” was effected in year of 2002, SHSLGC gained its legal stands and became a regular organization to officially provide its services to senior school libraries. In addition to its original services 2 during the years, SHSLGC expanded its services to conduct researches on current-status of senior school libraries, posting e-Paper on the Internet, composing a high school e-learning data bank, helping high school libraries to delivery services to communities. This paper addresses the development of SHSLGC, the history, milestones, the implementation, and its impact as well

School Libraries as Learning Environments: Examining Elementary School Students\u27 Perceptions
No full textThis paper presents preliminary results from a 2008/2009 research study examining the application of a learning environment paradigm to the school library setting. With a focus on Grade 5 science classes, we examined the relationships among student perceptions of science programs and library programs. From a practical point of view, this study presents a new model for considering the contribution of school libraries to the field of education, specifically science education. From a research point of view, this study makes a unique contribution to the field of learning environments by evaluating school library programs and their relationship to classroom environments. The research will continue at other grade levels and be extended to assess the relationship between learning environments in the school library setting and student achievement
