Allusions, Illusions and Learning: Integrating story into the broader curriculum
No full textThe workshop will be a visual presentation covering the rationale for a unit of research that involves integrated learning/curriculum and concentrates on critical literacy. The presentation will also involve a complete example unit and accompanying course booklet. Participants will be involved in a handson evaluation of the unit presented and assess its suitability to adapt to other “core literature genres”. The unit of work involves the “multiple faces of literacy: Reading. Knowing. Doing.” at the practical teaching level.
The aim is to show how to use texts from “classic fiction” in research units, as vehicles for learning, not only about the texts themselves, but also about their wider cultural significance and associated literary forms, as well as these stories represented in other media. The unit attempts to place everything examined in a meaningful context and to provide opportunities for students with diverse learning styles to enjoy the unit and to succeed. The objective is to make classic stories the integrating vehicles for learning, and so change them from literary “illusions” to “allusions” once more, therefore showing that the “critical literacy” approach can use traditional literature or story in teaching
The Design and Application of a Virtual Field Trip System
No full textThe goal of this research is to use information and communication technology (ICT) to develop so-called “virtual field trip” s ystem and the software follows the principles of the anchored instruction, whereby we can design a worksheet for outdoor education. The system combines the anchored instruction, worksheet, and image-based VR in order to make it as a supplementary tool for students before they have a field trip and to raise their learning motivation. Besides, the research also discusses the difference between traditional outdoor education and the model mentioned above
Educating and Integrating Minorities: The Added Value of the School Library
No full textVahl primary school in Oslo is Norway’s most multicultural school. 96% of the school’s 300 pupils belong to a linguistic minority (Vaagan & Enger 2004). The school library is seen and used as an extension of the class room. The range of library activities represent added value in relation to educating minority pupils and assisting in their subsequent integration in society. Some typical minority pupils are discussed, emphasizing in each case how the added value of the library comes into play

School Librarians, Informal Learning and Digital Reference Services
No full textDigital reference services support informal learning, and integrate it with formal education. Such services can promote the literacy of K-12 students by cultivating children’s desires to learn outside the classroom. Yet few school libraries offer digital reference services to students. This paper describes the use of formal,curriculum reflective, digital reference services that were used outside of school, by children who were seeking answers while pursuing informal learning. Findings and conclusions will be of interest to librarians who want to support informal learning through the use of digital reference services within their school libraries

Strategic Study of On-Line Reading Clubs in Senior High School Libraries of Taiwan
No full textIn this 21st century, information flow has already reached a matured level. It is the time to promote on-line reading clubs, as high school students generally possess the ability to study by themselves through the internet. In 1990, Taiwan Ministry of Education announced the plan to practice inter-schools on-line reading clubs for all high schools and constructed the students’ website to achieve a significant milestone for on-line reading clubs on campus. The on-line reading clubs are running through interactive web pages, electronic book stores, discussion boards, knowledge sharing etc. The essence of these clubs is the combination of key elements: reading, materials and communication. In this research, we first conduct with questionnaire and interview approaches to study their current situations, executive guidelines, resource requirements, performance evaluations and operating strategies of on-line reading clubs in Taiwan. Then we give a blueprint of well-function on-line reading club web environment to encourage students to involve in the clubs and cultivate inter-school reading. Finally, we propose strategic suggestions for practicing on-line reading clubs in senior high school libraries

Primary students’ reading habits of printed and e-books
No full textTechnological advancement has made books available not only in printed format but also in electronic format. To understand primary students’ reading habits of printed books and e-books and discover if differences can be found in students of different gender or different level of studies, 99 primary schools students were invited to complete a questionnaire. Results show that boys generally read more than girls regardless of the book format, while boys are more positive about reading e-books and using digital libraries for reading online books. Students who read more printed books also tend to read more e-books. Implications for boys’ positive attitudes towards e-books in developing their reading habits, as well as the potential development of digital libraries are drawn
