Assessing Teacher and Librarian Collaboration: A Preliminary Report
No full textExploratory factor analysis was used to examine the structure of a 32-item teacher and librarian collaboration survey (TLC-II). The survey consisted of two scales with 16 items in each scale, Frequency and Importance to Student Learning. Scores from teacher surveys (N=194) were examined using principal axis factoring and oblique rotation to identify underlying constructs. A four factor interpretable structure of teacher and librarian collaboration emerged providing support for a proposed model of teacher and librarian collaboration. Internal consistency was high for the overall scale and for each of the factors. The results of this study provide a basis for further refinement of the instrument in preparation for broad distribution among teachers and librarians
Facebook: A School Librarian’s Tool for Building a Community of Readers
No full textIn this paper Facebook is examined as an educational tool that can be used to facilitate the development of literacy skills. The philosophical assumptions underlying the Social Development Theory by Vygotsky and the Social Learning Theory by Bandura were used to substantiate the benefits students can gain from learning in a social environment such as Facebook. Librarians can help students to develop their literacy skills, by using the Literature Circle on facebook. Assigning readers roles such as literary luminary, synthesizer, analyzer, and evaluator and rotating these roles will allow readers to develop the various literacy skills overtime and to avoid monotony
The Information Search Process of English Language Learner (ELL) Students in a Guided Inquiry Project: An In-depth Case Study of Two Korean High School Students in the United States
No full textThis study seeks to understand the information-to-knowledge experience of English Language Learner (ELL) students in a Guided Inquiry project undertaken by the librarian and subject teachers. As a pilot study, it provides an in-depth examination of two Korean 11th grade students in a biology class of a high school in New Jersey, U.S. During the project, data were collected through questionnaire, surveys, search journals, search sessions, observation, students’ papers, and interviews. The findings of this study will facilitate the understanding on the information seeking and knowledge construction process of ELL students so that school environments, including school libraries, can provide meaningful instructional and service interventions for them
The Core Values of Information Literacy in the Ubiquitous Information Society
No full textThis research aims to study the perception of school practitioners on the core values of information literacy in the ubiquitous information society. An information literacy framework has been proposed that includes four dimensions and eleven derived standards. Seventeen focus group discussion sessions were conducted to gain an understanding of the views of school practitioners. The research findings show that information literacy education should be designed with the humanistic rationale of guiding learners to develop information processing skills, which requires both cognitive capability and the associated affective elements. Students should further develop in the meta-cognitive and socio-cultural domains
Joint-use Libraries: Co-operation Between Public Libraries and School Libraries in Theory and Practice
No full textExploitation of school libraries by public libraries is strongly promoted by (local) politicians and decision makers. In the Netherlands this is influenced by a reform in the educational system in the 1990’s and the reconsideration of public libraries in the local area. The school library has become a marketing target. Public libraries and school libraries have varying roles. These roles are not similar but complimentary. Key factors for successful co-operation are the recognition of the role of the school library in the educational process and the competencies of the school librarian. As an example of a cooperation process, the establishment of a joint-use library in the brand new public library branch in the new district Ypenburg, will be described
Crossing the Educational Divide: Issues Surrounding the Provision and Use of Electronic Information Resources in Secondary and Tertiary Education
No full textThe school librarian is responsible for facilitating access to electronic resources, creating an awareness of these formats, and ensuring that the pupils and staff have the skills to exploit them effectively. Traditionally, these skills have been developed within the individual secondary and tertiary educational sectors. In the United Kingdom, skills acquisition and the implications of resource provision are being considered across secondary and tertiary education. The paper opens with an account of a study of the provision and use of electronic resources in tertiary education in the U.K. and then explores the implications of research into skills transfer between secondary schools and the tertiary sector. 
Lighting the Fire: Inspiring Boys to Become Readers

This paper looks at the importance of reading, some of the current thinking about boys and reading, and research carried out among students of St Andrew\u27s Cathedral School, where a reading culture has developed. What implications do these findings have for our profession - for school libraries and teacher librarians? What other strategies can we employ to encourage our students to develop a lifelong love of reading? Transforming Instructional Practice: Two Case Studies of Inquiry-based learning
No full textA comparison of case studies of two elementary schools in the United States, in two different Library Power project sites, reveals that the implementation of a new instructional approach such as inquiry-based learning is a complex and multifaceted endeavour. Provision of enhanced collections, improved facilities, full time librarians, flexible scheduling, and professional support was not sufficient for the transformation of instructional practice. Although the two schools appeared to have benefited from similar improvements in resources, only one of the schools demonstrated the transformation in instructional practice that is essential to improved student learning. The roots of this difference appeared to lie in the beliefs held by educators in the two schools about the nature of children, the nature of learning, and the nature of teaching
