Abstract | The visual essay is based on research carried out between 2010 and 2015 under the title “Bodies of Crisis—Remembering the German Wende.” The project mainly consisted of oral-history research and a series of performance events presented in the UK and Germany. In 27 interviews, women from East Germany recollected their embodied quotidian experience amidst the political transition from a socialist to a capitalist state in 1989 and thereafter. Live performance opened up access points for a transcultural translation of this experience involving practitioners from diverse cultural and creative backgrounds. The performance work extended the culturally specific experience beyond the East German case by pointing toward global struggles for existence, acceptance, and emancipation.

The giallo, an Italian genre of horror film that peaked in the 1970s, is infamous for peddling shock and slaughter. Under the graphic sex and violence, however, the giallo expresses popular anxiety surrounding the transgression of social and sexual norms in modern Italy. Superficially, the giallo seems to suggest that social and cultural turmoil necessarily produces death. Yet the giallo foregrounds the obvious excitement and attraction of transgression, allowing that transgression could in fact be generative of positive, invigorating difference.

The Factories of the Past Are Turning Into the Data Centres of the Future

Abstract | This essay traces the history and geography of data’s materiality by examining the transformation of industrial building stock in Chicago to serve the needs of the data industry. Using contemporary and archival photographs as entry points, the paper unpacks the rise of an information-based economy in relation to the decline of an industrial economy. Buildings where workers once processed checks, baked bread, and printed Sears catalogues now route packets of information and host servers engaged in financial trading. Thus, contained within the physical transformation of some of Chicago’s buildings is a larger historical and geographical narrative about the uneven development of capitalism. This historical view reminds us that infrastructure is, and always has been, political.

The “Gentle Lie”: Women and the GDR Medical System in Film and Literature

Abstract | Within the context of medical-historical research, this article compares the depiction of female patients in GDR and post-GDR fictional texts: Lothar Warneke’s Die Beunruhigung (1982), Christa Wolf’s Nachdenken über Christa T. (1968) and Leibhaftig (2002), and Kathrin Schmidt’s Du stirbst nicht (2009). This approach highlights the idiosyncrasies of GDR medicine, which demanded patients’ collaboration in therapeutic measures and hid from them the truth about their conditions. This custom, known as the “gentle lie,” as well as other top-down practices echo the state’s patriarchal attitude towards its citizens, particularly women, evidencing that the GDR claim of gender equality was not practiced in key areas of women’s lives. Furthermore, there is evidence that hierarchical structures denying patients’ agency persist today in eastern Germany.

If the issue has already inspired a number of thinkers in France (Michel Serres, Jean Baudrillard, Régis Debray) and in Canada (Derrick de Kerckhove, Pierre Lévy), this essay approaches the question under new light, in relation to contemporary visual arts. By studying three exhibitions: Vision trouble d’Annie Briard, Our Land. Contemporary Art from the Arctic and Superimposition: Sculpture and Image opened in Saint-Boniface and Winnipeg, Manitoba (2016-17), it outlines the current relevance of McLuhan’s concepts, such as: the sensory experience, the mosaic and the global village. After all, how do visual arts, new media and critical thinking contribute to redefining Marshall McLuhan’s theories today
