Level of Stress and Coping Mechanisms of Teacher Education Interns of the University of Bohol
Stress is a state of mental tension and worry that causes strong feelings. To overcome stress, there is a need to employ some strategies to mitigate threatening and stressful situations. These strategies are known as coping mechanisms. The study aimed to determine the level of stress and the coping mechanisms used by the University of Bohol (UB) - Teachers College student interns. The study utilized the quantitative method to gather data through an adapted survey tool. The data gathered were subjected to statistical treatment making use of simple percentage, weighted mean, composite weighted mean, and Pearson-Product Moment Correlation. The respondents were the Teachers College student interns of UB during the second semester of the academic year 2017–2018. The study revealed that the respondents’ level of personal-related stress was found to be “Slightly High” with a mean rating of 1.818. The study further revealed that the respondents’ level of school-related stress was discovered to be “Slightly High” with a mean rating of 1.9286. The level of the coping mechanism that the respondents used is described as “Moderately used” with a mean rating of 2.7054. The study suggests that females are more prone to stress compared to their male counterparts. Based on the results, intervention measures have been proposed to combat the stress experienced
Inclusivity in Education Among Sama-Bajaos in Bohol, Philippines: A Tracer Study
The Sama-Bajaos, a nomad ethnic tribe, came to Bohol from Zamboanga in western Mindanao. Known as “sea gypsies,” they lived in boat houses along Tagbilaran Strait while living as fishers and mendicants in the streets and ports of Tagbilaran City, Bohol. The community lives below the poverty line. This study aimed to look into the impact of the educational intervention program for the Sama-Bajao community initiated by the Provincial Government of Bohol in collaboration with the University of Bohol - Graduate School and Professional Studies in 2007. As qualitative research, this study stitches the narratives of high school students, college graduates, and their community leaders. The study made use of data analysis, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), In-depth Interview (IDI), and Key Informant Interview (KII). The study found that the beneficiaries of the program are now included in formal educational programs. The community has produced college graduates in recent years who are now working for their community. The study established that the program has made a significant impact on the lives of the beneficiaries, their families, and the community. Narratives of hope and success are integrated with the write-up to highlight the importance of inclusivity in education that provides equity in terms of knowledge acquisition, talent and skills development, and opportunities for gainful employment among cultural minorities
Personality Traits in Relation to Academic Performance of Accountancy, Business and Management Strand Students
This study seeks to determine the relationship between personality traits under the big five dimensions of personality theory and the academic performance of the students. This study intends to benefit not only the respondents but also the teachers, institutions, guidance counselors, and parents. There were 224 accountancy, business, and management strand students of the University of Bohol-Senior High School who were the respondents. Findings of the study revealed that under the big five dimensions of personality theory, the students obtained high in the following dimensions, namely, openness, extraversion, neuroticism, and agreeableness while very high in conscientiousness. The researchers concluded that there is no relationship between the personality traits and the academic performance of the students
Awareness of HIV/AIDS Among Pregnant Women
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is considered a potentially life-threatening virus that damages the immune system. HIV infection can lead to AIDS (or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), which is a complex illness with a wide range of complications and symptoms. AIDS is the final stage of HIV. When individuals reach this stage, they are at high risk for opportunistic infections due to their severely damaged immune system, which could lead to death. It affects everyone, including pregnant women. The primary objective of this study is to determine the level of awareness of HIV/AIDS among pregnant women in Manga District, Tagbilaran City. This study used a descriptive normative survey method with 19-item awareness questions to 36 expectant mothers. The findings revealed that the respondents were strongly aware of HIV/AIDS. There was a significant relationship between age and educational attainment to the level of HIV/AIDS awareness among pregnant mothers in Manga District. An HIV/AIDS Advocacy program should be implemented and cascaded to all women regardless of age, sex, and educational level to help prevent the spread of the disease
Social Skills and Academic Performance among Grade 10 Students of the University of Bohol – University High School
Social skills are a set of behaviors manifested by individuals in an interpersonal context in which they express feelings, attitudes, desires, opinions, or rights suitable for the situation, respecting the same action in others with the dimensions of self-control, empathy, assertion, and cooperation. Academic performance in this study is measured according to the general average of the second grading period of School Year 2017-2018 of the Grade 10 Junior High students of the University of Bohol - University High School (UB-UHS) in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines. This study intends to determine the level of social skills of the said students, in relation to their academic performance for the school year 2017-2018. This study made use of a quantitative method, specifically the descriptive-survey technique with the aid of the questionnaire to gather the level of social skills among the respondents. Results showed all respondents had a Moderate level of all the dimensions of social skills. Noteworthy to mention was their greater propensity to exercise Cooperation, followed by a tie in Empathy and Self-Control, and last was Assertion. There was a significant relationship between sex and academic performance. When comparing the four dimensions of social skills using ANOVA, there was a significant variance in the four dimensions. When further tested using Scheffe’s Test, the pairings revealed significant differences in Self-Control and Empathy, between Self-Control and Cooperation, between Empathy and Assertion, between Empathy and Cooperation and Assertion and Cooperation. However, an insignificant result was found between Self-Control and Assertion. Hence, a need to focus on more intensive programs on developing Social Skills for the students to develop and hone a well-balanced personality
Significant Life Events of Aging
Significant life events are bound to happen at any phase in life. The aging process alone reveals recognizable life events that are inevitable, which the different biological and social theories tried to come up with explanations for. Amid the changes, which one seemed to dominate? Understanding this phenomenon is essential not only for the elderly to prepare but as well as for the significant others and people in the health care arena to understand. This study aimed to assess the significant life events that affected change among elderlies. This research is qualitative and employed interpretative phenomenology, utilizing the Hermeneutic approach in the data gathering process. The informants were the seven elderlies from the first district of Bohol, aged 60 years old and above chosen through purposive sampling. An in-depth interview was conducted to gather the data which focused on the life events experienced by the informants and how they affected change. The data were transcribed, interpreted, and analyzed to come up with the common meaning of the lived experience. The findings of the study pointed out four themes; a.) Advancing age, declining health, and vanishing resources, b.) Retirement: the inevitable moment and uncertainty of what lies ahead, c.) the loss of a loved one and the accompanying pain, and d.) The moment of change and living with life’s changes. These four themes explain the conclusion that the aging process brings about significant events such as the decline in health, uncertainty in Retirement, and the possible loss of loved ones. These events affected changed the individuals’ lives
Exit Questionnaire Survey, University of Bohol, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines S.Y. 2016-2017
The practice and principle of assuring, understanding, and managing quality education have been embedded in higher education. In a scholastic institution, there are academic and non-academic endeavors designed to uphold the mission of the school. The University of Bohol implemented curricular and co-curricular activities on the premise of actualizing its mission to provide a holistic education anchored in the trinity of virtues: scholarship, character, and service. CHED CMO Order No. 09 Series of 2013 indicates that an educational institution should seek to develop an individual who will later become productive citizens of the country and the world. Its responsibility is not only confined to the teaching and development of job skills, but also the acquisition of life skills and values. These individuals should be able to contribute positively to the progress of his/her country, and the upliftment of human conditions. Higher education institutions must provide student-centered activities and services in support of academic instruction intended to facilitate holistic and well-rounded student development for active involvement as future responsible citizens and leaders. These institutions shall ensure full implementation of this policy and guideline and provide mechanisms for its monitoring and evaluation. Thus, to find out the attainment of its purpose and the effectiveness of the curriculum and support services, the University of Bohol through the Guidance Center, an integral part of the educational system creates programs for student development as well as monitoring and proper evaluation of such programs conducted an exit survey through the use of questionnaire in a web-based format to the graduating students of the academic year 2016-2017. The results are divided into three categories, namely: the general curriculum, skills acquired, and relationship with administration, faculty, and student services staff
Problems Encountered and Support System among Teenage Mothers in San Isidro, Tagbilaran City, Bohol
Pregnancy brings both physical and psychological changes in a woman. Teenage mothers are unprepared for pregnancy because of their young age and lack of experience. They encounter problems during their period, so they are highly dependent on their family, community, government, and non-government support. Their study aims to determine the problems encountered and support received by teenage mothers within the duration of their pregnancy. The study utilized a quantitative survey method of research. Random sampling is the selection of participants was used where there were seventeen (17) teenage mothers in the age range of 13-19 years who participated in the study. Data gathering was conducted in their respective homes with the use of a self-made questionnaire. The results showed that the level of problems encountered by teenage mothers regarding physical, psychological, and socio-economic was low as well as they have received support from their families, community, and the government and non-government sectors. However, there wasn’t ample support from the sectors mentioned in this study that was experienced by teenage mothers
It is Raining Tears: Voices of Women, Victims of Violence
Violence against women is a form of men’s expression of controlling women to retain power. These behaviors include physical, emotional, psychological, verbal, and economic abuse, threatened or actual use of weapons, and destruction of property. The study utilized a qualitative method of research using a phenomenological approach. Four selected informants were individually interviewed in the municipality of Carmen, Bohol, Philippines. The researcher used an interview guide with a voice recorder to safeguard the accuracy of the responses of each informant. Moreover, the members of the panel validated the interview guide. Research ethics clearance was secured from the Ethics Review Committee. Eight themes were created. Each subproblem had two themes which were: (1) Wounds from the Hand, Scars on the Mind, and Reasons Behind the Scene. (2) Sword Pierced Heart and Scars from Physical and Mental Cruelty. (3) The Living Martyr and Family Over Pain. (4) Caring Ears and Shield from the Defender. Recommendations were the following: strengthening the awareness of women on domestic violence, deepening stakeholders’ coordination, further training, and seminars on effective counseling to the PNP and DSWD, and allocation of public funds for temporary shelter and immediate needs of the victims
Compliance of Private Lying-in Clinics as Perceived by Midwives
Private Lying–the clinic is a primary-level health care facility for low-risk childbearing women who have normal status during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. In Bohol province, most Lying–clinics are owned and managed by private practicing registered midwives. Compliance in this study pertains to the capacity of the private Lying-in clinics as to facilities, equipment, and personnel. This study aimed to assess the personal and professional profiles of the respondents, and the compliance status of clinic managers and clinic staff to the DOH licensing and Phil Health Requirements based on the seven areas under study in the operation and management of private Lying- clinics. The researcher formulated survey questions adapted from DOH and Assessment Checklist for licensing birthing facilities. The respondents of the study were clinic managers and staff of the eleven private Lying-in clinics in Bohol which were managed by midwives. The study made use of a quantitative normative survey, and the responses were analyzed through frequency, percentile, weighted mean, and Scheffe’s test. Results showed that all clinic managers and clinic staff were registered midwives, trained, and were excellent in complying with the requirements in the operation and management of private Lying in-clinics. The outcome of this study may serve as the basis for a review of the accreditation requirements of a primary-level health care facility for administration
