GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS AND LABOUR: NEED FOR BROADENING THE BOUNDARIES AND FRONTIERS OF LABOUR LAWS
This paper makes an attempt to assess the impact of the globalfinancial crisis on both the Indian economy and the Indian labour force.Recession set off with the collapse of the US investment bank, LehmanBrothers leading to heavy losses in Asian stock markets. The turmoil in theUS credit markets has affected other countries too, including India. Therehave been major job losses in the banking, financial, insurance segmentand the IT–BPO sector. On the whole about 1.5 million job losses havebeen recorded for the year 2009. The global financial crisis has causedobvious issues in the private sector as to discharge, retrenchment,redundancy, closure, the rights of workers against insolvent companies andprogrammes dealing with unemployment. The labour laws in India, enactedto protect the interests of the labour, have been ineffective as illustrated bytheir implementation in the BPOs and SEZs in India. The Critical Need for School-Based Interventions to Safeguard Children Against Sexual Abuse
In conjunction with the constitutional guarantees, India has a sturdy legalapparatus and commitment to a multitude of international covenants toaddress and ensure child protection. However, it is contemptible thatincidents of child sexual abuse are rampant across the country. This paperargues that schools, as pivotal social spaces for children, can play a key rolein sensitizing children, parents, teachers and communities to this seriousand much stigmatized issue. It is suggested that teachers should becapacitated and trained to provide age appropriate sexual health educationto children as well as to recognize the warning signs of any kind of sexualassault or abuse on children
The Student Police Cadet Project in Kerala: A Transformative Model for Adolescence
The Student Police Cadet (SPC) Project is an innovative model of smartcommunity-based proactive policing, designed by the Kerala Police in 2010.This study aims to understand how the SPC Project was implemented andthe changes in values, skills and behaviour experienced by the cadets inthe capital of Kerala. In this cross-sectional study, the data was collectedfrom former student police cadets and Community Police Officers whofacilitated the movement, by administering questionnaires and in-depthinterviews. It was found that the objectives and programmes of the SPCProject successfully reached its targeted population
