Higher Education Focus: Meeting the Reading List Challenge
Get PDFTwo beneficiaries of the UKeiG student and early career professional grants programme report back on conferences they attended earlier in the year. Their focus is on higher education: the emerging skills set required for effective collection development in universities, and the complex cultural (even political) considerations that have to be borne in mind before launching electronic reading list projects as part of the wider technology-enhanced learning agenda. Claudio Svaluto, Graduate Trainee at the Albert Sloman Library, University of Essex writes: “The reading list conference in Loughborough in April was closely related to e-resources, accessibility and the user experience, all subjects I have a personal interest in. Being in contact with professionals from different institutions has helped me choose how to develop my career, including affecting my choice of a postgraduate course next year. UKeiG has provided an excellent opportunity to publish in eLucidate. Sharing knowledge via publications and networking is a powerful way to give back to the community and acquire new creative ideas.

Get PDFNowadays, Wikipedia is so ubiquitous that when you use the Web, you don’t even have to look for it – Wikipedia comes to you. It is well known that Google search is deliberately adjusted to ensure that hits from Wikipedia are shown high up in search results, in fact so high that SEO experts wonder how it is achieved. (See, for example “Why Wikipedia is top on Google: the SEO truth no-one wants to hear.”) But not so well known is the process that goes on in the background to create Wikipedia content. You may think that this work is largely manual, and there are indeed tens of thousands of enthusiastic and committed volunteers who maintain and compile Wikipedia entries, but there is also an increasing amount of automation providing ways in which the process can be speeded up, and, as you might expect, some disagreement over the best route that automation should take.

How are they grappling with curricula changes and the transition to and interface with higher education and the workplace?
Reflecting on the use of e-resources in schools, this article outlines some of the challenges and opportunities schools face when engaging with the digital world. We look at how we have used e-resources within this setting and conclude by considering some new opportunities to explore in the coming year.
The following thoughts on using digital resources in schools arose from a discussion reflecting on Amy’s first year in her new post as Librarian at Wimbledon High School. Throughout the discussion we considered what has worked well, the challenges we are currently facing and looked ahead to possible new opportunities and developments. Having previously worked together, we then thought about our current different working contexts and changes over the last year, which reinforced the importance of adapting our service to the specifics of each organisation
