\u27I feel an urgent need to understand how AI will affect my life\u27 – Chris Armstrong The UK e-information Group management committee was saddened that our chair David Ball passed away recently, only weeks after the loss of Douglas Veal, a great information scientist who co-chaired with David our prestigious international Tony Kent Strix information retrieval award panel. It dredged up thoughts of the movers and shakers past and present who have supported us over the years, since our inception as a special interest group of the Institute of Information Scientists in 1978 and now as a core part of the CILIP community

Our profession is renowned and respected for adhering to common values and ethics

My name is Megane Quelvennec, I’m Evidence & Knowledge Librarian at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. I was fortunate enough to receive a UKeiG bursary to attend the CILIP Conference 2024 in Birmingham. As a new professional in the library, knowledge and information world, it was an educational experience hearing from speakers from diverse sectors, not just healthcare

In November 2023 CILIP hosted its inaugural digital transformation event ‘Libraries Rewired’ – rebranded as Rewired for 2024, in London. ‘Tech-curious’ library, information and knowledge professionals converged on the capital for a day that embraced everything from AI and data to advocacy and value proposition. The predominating theme was that the LIS community is not at the forefront of fundamental paradigm changing developments and needs proactively to set the agenda for the future, not respond to it. Here are just a few personal takeaways

    A digital revolution in education

The disruptive AI tsunami looms large across the education sector from schools, through Further Education and Higher Education. The potential benefits are huge. AI continues to dominate the media with extensive debate on the implications for the future of education. The common mantra has been “don’t fear it… embrace it and reap its benefits”, and the sector is buzzing with discussions on what those benefits might be. To temper any enthusiasm for Ed Tech innovation, there has also been a rally cry not to throw the baby out with the bath water to “ensure that the vital human elements of education are preserved”

    Keep calm and recalibrate

AI was a striding colossus of an elephant in the keynote room at CILIP Conference 2023 back in July. During CEO Nick Poole’s closing remarks, a colleague leaned over and asked what I thought. “Keep calm, but don’t carry on as normal”, was my take on the event. I’ve chosen five encapsulating key words to explain why. "Business as usual" has left the building. It’s time to refuel in mid-air, take stock and reflect on a perpetually morphing library, information and knowledge landscape. Relentless change is the new normal, and adapting to it, managing it and initiating it should be our raison d’etre

Leadership, shifting digital landscapes and the impact of AI - personal reflection on the 2023 CILIP Conference

The key theme of the 2023 CILIP Conference was leadership, providing a platform for voices across the sector to share their knowledge and skills with delegates eager to learn more about the constantly shifting landscape of information. I was lucky enough to be one of the recipients of a UKeiG conference bursary and am incredibly thankful that I had the opportunity to add my own voice to the mix of discussions that were held over two days

AI is omnipresent; some would say omnipotent. Everybody’s talking algorithms, rushing to create strategies and mourning the demise of boring, unintelligent mankind
