Assessing Teachers’ Readiness to Teach Peace Education in a Philippine State University
Anchored to the theory of transformative education, this study determined the teachers\u27 readiness to teach peace education in terms of knowledge, attitude and values, and skills. This paper employed the quantitative research design particularly the descriptive-comparative approach. The respondents were the total enumeration of 55 state university teachers. It was responded to using a validated and reliability-tested questionnaire and was analyzed using descriptive and inferential tools. The results revealed that the teachers possessed a high readiness level to teach peace education. In sex, both male and female possessed a high readiness level to teach peace education. Likewise, in educational attainment, the result was a consistently high readiness level for both bachelor\u27s and postgraduate degrees. In campus affiliation, both campuses had teachers with high readiness to teach peace education. Meanwhile, there was no difference in their readiness when grouped by sex, educational attainment, and campus affiliation. However, a difference was revealed in skills when grouped to campus affiliation, in favor of teachers on the main campus who possessed a higher readiness level compared to teachers from the external campuses. Nevertheless, this did not affect the general result. Hence, the teachers\u27 readiness is essential in materializing peace education. Here, the researcher recommends the inclusion of Peace Education as a stand-alone subject, and that the university administration should give formal training to teachers. In addition, the university, in line with mainstreaming peace education through curriculum innovation, should promote harmonized curricula and pedagogical standards toward an effective peace education program in state colleges and universities. Finally, to be abreast with this innovation, the university must also be established as a center for peace education
The Epidemiological Impact of Diet and Nutrition on Non-communicable Diseases: Insights into Over Nutrition and Undernutrition
Aims: To revisited the diet and nutrition based non-communicable diseases (NCD) with emphasize on undernutrition and over nutrition with its related factors
Discussion: The condition of weight related derangement such as unintentional weight loss or underweight, overweight and obesity are still a major NCD related health problem because these are rapidly emerging derangement in nutritional status from the epidemiological perspective. The paradox of nutrition transition shifts for global nutritional status due to excessive intake with sedentary lifestyle which occur since very early in life causing overweight and obesity, but on the other hand, undernutrition or even malnutrition due to insufficient intake and perhaps in combination with prolonged and persistent infection also happen. The burden persists, even keep raising, especially among vulnerable group of the community, namely women and children. Mostly, it is related to unhealthy dietary habits consists of overconsumption in sugar, saturated fat and cholesterol, and also salt, with restricted dose of vegetables and fruits. Once again, malnutrition is a silent but deteriorating condition which cover from undernutrition, overweight, and obesity. Nutritional imbalances can precipitate series of events consisting of insulin sensitivity which leads to insulin resistance, chronic oxidative stress, and its related inflammation- usually also happen chronic systemic and low grade, which can lead to NCD development.
Conclusion: From the epidemiology perspective, the persistent and even emerging diet and nutrition based NCD are important to tackle immediately because their effect, short and long term, which can affect the well being of vulnerable individuals, their community and even their country. Every preventive effort must be practiced by all stakeholder
Physicochemical Properties of Soils from Dumpsite in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria
Aim: To assess the physiochemical properties of Dumpsites soils from Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO).
Study Design: This was a simple randomized sampling study technique.
Methodology: Soil samples were obtained from three different dumpsites located within the school namely Girls’ hostel dumpsite, Ihiagwa dumpsite and Eziobodo dumpsite. The soil\u27s physicochemical characteristics were ascertained by air drying it and then sieving it through a 2 mm sieve. The Bouyoucos hydrometer method was used to determine the soil\u27s texture. A pH meter was used to measure the pH of a 1:2.5 soil-water suspension, and a conductivity meter was used to measure the extract electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon using the wet digestion method of Walkley and Black. Available phosphorus by Bray and Kurtz method; total nitrogen by micro Kjeldahl procedure, as explained by Horneck and Miller (20). Following extraction with ammonium acetate, exchangeable bases were identified. Potassium (K) was measured using a flamephotometer, while calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) were assessed using the EDTA titration method.
Results: Results obtained from the study, revealed that values between waste dumpsite and control site were significantly different. Findings showed that the pH value in sampled soils from studied dumpsites ranged from 6.38±0.10 and 7.11±0.10 while the mean pH value for controlled site was 3.98±0.08. Data obtained show that the values of pH; Cation Exchange Capacity (cmol+kgG1); Calcium (mEq/ 100 g);4.50; 4.24; 4.76, Potassium (mEq/ 100 g) 0.59; 0.48; 0.79 and Nitrogen (mEq/ 100 g) were. 0.98; 1.84; 0.73 respectively among the sampled dumpsites. Furthermore; Results showed that there was an increase in the pH, potassium, nitrogen content value at each dumpsite than their corresponding control. The mean soil porosity indicated higher porosity in the control sites. The soil particle size distribution indicated that the control site is sandier than the various dumpsites and the dumpsites on the other hand had more slit and clay component than the control site.
Conclusion: According to the study, trash from the dumpsite under investigation may have an impact on the distribution of grain sizes or the soils beneath them. It also showed a significant contribution to elevated pH, EC, OC, OM, Av. P, ON, basic cations, and CEC values. The soil at the study site has a higher proportion of sand fraction and a lower percentage of clay fraction, as evidenced by the relative increase in the pollutant leaching potentials of municipal solid waste
Familial Hypomagnesemia with Secondary Hypocalcemia: A Challenging Medical Affair
Familial or genetic hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia is a disease typically presenting with epilepsy and characterized by low blood levels of magnesium and calcium and metabolic bone disease, and is caused by mutations in the TRPM6 genes. Various factors such as low dietary intake and poor absorption of magnesium in the gut, affect magnesium balance. Hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia is rare, and therefore there are no large epidemiological studies reflecting the global distribution of these conditions. We report in this article a case of a female infant with a diagnosis of congenital hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia. In daily clinical practice, one can usually see it in connection with neonates. According to the literature, mutations of TRPM6 account for about 40–50% of hypomagnesemia patients with secondary hypocalcemia

This paper examines the application of mathematical tools—numerical sequences, derivatives, and differential equations—that have important uses within economic analyses on population modeling, investment growth, and population cost. Numerical examples shall be used to illustrate how such a mathematical approach helps in financial decision-making and long-term forecasting. It\u27s expected that this work will provide insight into the benefits of mathematical models in addressing complex economic challenges and make a case for interdisciplinary approaches in economics
Comparing the Performance of Physical, Chemical and Biological Treatment in Waste Water Remediation
This study is aimed at comparing the performance of physical, chemical and biological treatment in wastewater remediation using standard sampling methods of APHA (1999). Grey wastewater samples were collected from wastewater collection generated from the student’s hostel at Chukwemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Uli, Anambra State. Wastewater remediation involves treating contaminated water to remove pollutants before it will be reused. This process typically includes physical, chemical and biological methods. Physical method involves filtration, sedimentation and adsorption to separate solids from water. Chemical method uses coagulants, flocculants and disinfectants to neutralise contaminants. Biological method employs microorganisms to break down organic matter through processes like activated sludge or bio-filtration. The supernatant was then subjected to physicochemical analysis. The physicochemical analysis carried out in the cause of this study includes; determination of temperature, pH and conductivity, determination of phosphate, determination of chloride, determination of dissolved oxygen, determination of chemical oxygen demand, determination of total dissolved solid, determination of total hardness of the water and colour determination, which from the result obtained it was discovered that grey waste water has the highest values in pH (7.45), turbidity (356.79 NTU), chloride (151.2 mg/mL), colour unit (77.28 CU), total hardness (500 mg/mL), COD(500 mg/mL) and phosphate (50.0 mg/mL). While grey wastewater plus photocatalyst plus moringa extract has the highest value in temperature (279⁰C), Conductivity (418 µS/cm), TDS (313.50 mg/mL), and TDO (25.00 mg/mL) respectively. A thorough review of the purification processes been used in this study alongside literature, indicated that none of the treatment options can be used alone safely to treat wastewater to make them save for home use. It is therefore recommended that a combination of the performance of physical, chemical and biological treatment in wastewater remediation is needed to achieve a greater and better result
Quality Assessment of Surface and Groundwater from Eleme Communities in Rivers State
This study assessed the suitability of surface and groundwater for irrigation and domestic purposes in Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria. Several studies have reported that contaminations from nearby petrochemical and industrial activities have raised concerns about water quality in the region. Parameters such as Soluble Sodium Percentage (SSP), Magnesium Adsorption Ratio (MAR), Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC), Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Permeability Index (PI), Kelly’s Ratio (KR), and Water Quality Index (WQI) were analyzed for both dry and rainy seasons. Results indicated that while Onne groundwater (Rainy season: SSP (31.0±4.9%), MAR (35.2±10.7%), RSC (0.5±0.6meg/l), SAR (0.7±0.2meg/l), PI (41.5±8.2%), KR (0.5±0.1meg/l); Dry season: SSP (35.2±10.7%), MAR (5.6±2.1%), RSC (1.7±0.9meg/l), SAR (0.9±0.4meg/l), PI (65.5±12.9%), KR (0.6± .28meg/l) and Aleto River surface water (Rainy season: SSP (30.3±3.12%), MAR (25.8±11.42%), RSC (-60.3±12.31meg/l), SAR (5.0±0.62meg/l), PI (84.9±18.62%), KR (0.4± 0.06meg/l); Dry season: SSP (33.2±3.67%), MAR (21.4±7.02%), RSC (-52.0±6.29meg/l), SAR (5.5±1.08meg/l), PI (85±24.1%), KR (0.5±0.09meg/l) remain suitable for irrigation, most water sources in other communities exceed recommended thresholds, particularly in SSP and KR. Seasonal fluctuations notably affect parameters like MAR and PI, highlighting the need for continuous monitoring. Elevated heavy metals, especially lead, nickel, and cadmium, were identified in some groundwater samples, likely due to industrial pollution, thus further impacting water safety. The findings underscore the necessity for remediation and regular water quality management to safeguard agricultural sustainability and public health in the Eleme communities
Measurement of Traffic Noise and Traffic Volume on Major Junctions along East-West Road, Port Harcourt, Nigeria
This study investigated noise pollution level during peak and low traffic hours in six junctions along East west road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria with specific objectives to identify peak(rush) and low (non-rush) traffic period, measure the traffic noise level during peak and low traffic hours, to compare the noise level with international best standards and determine the variation in noise level at peak and low traffic periods across all junctions hence touch lighting the adverse effect of too much or unwanted sound on the environment and also human well-being as generated by vehicular movements. An integrated noise level meter (MEXTECH-805) was used to measure the equivalent continuous noise level (Leq) for a period of six days between 8a.m to 9a.m and 12pm to 1pm. A vehicle count was done to determine the number of vehicles per hour passing through each junction at the early hours and in the mid-day which made evident the low and peak traffic periods and that vehicle flow affects traffic noise considering results of noise measured. Results showed noise level during peak traffic period were all above the recommended exposure threshold for both WHO and FMEnv standard. The range in values of the Leq at peak traffic were, for Eleme junction (90dB- 97.1dB), Rumuodara junction (89.2dB -96.4 dB), Eliozu junction (89.9dB - 98.8dB), Nkpolu junction (92.8dB-101dB), Choba junction (92.8Db-99.3Db) and Alakahia junction (90dB-99.6dB). However, for the low traffic period from (12pm to 1pm), the result showed a drastic reduction in the level of noise generated from traffic at later hours of the day. Eleme junction recorded an equivalent (Leq) noise level range of (60dB-70.4dB), Eliozu junction (59.9dB-70dB), Nkpolu junction (61.9dB -78.8dB), (59.8dB-70.1dB) for Choba junction and (63.2dB - 69.2dB) for Alakahia junction. Mean noise generated in all junctions during low traffic period were below the threshold level for the World Health Organization and other regulations. The mean equivalent noise level for peak traffic reveals that Eleme is the least with 64.2dB then Eliozu junction with 65.8dB followed closely by Choba junction with 65db while Nkpolu, Rumuodara and Alakahia junctions had 66dB, 66.3dB and 67dB respectively. For peak traffic, Rumuodara junction proved to have the least of noise generated at 92.1dB followed by Choba with 93.9dB and Alakahia with 94.5dB while Eliozu, Eleme, and Nkpolu junctions had the highest noise generated with 95.2dB, 95.5dB, and 96.9dB respectively
Prevalence, Cysts Distributions, Associated Risk Factors and Economic Importance of Cysticercus Tenuicollis in Small Ruminant Slaughtered at Jigjiga Municipal Abattoir, Somali Regional state, Ethiopia
A cross-sectional study was done between November 2019 and April 2020 with the goal of identifying the prevalence of cysticercus tenuicollis in small ruminants, evaluating possible risk factors associated with it, and estimating the amount of the direct economic losses associated with condemned organs. A total of 545 small ruminants slaughtered at Jigjiga municipal abattoir were randomly selected and managed through ante-mortem and post-mortem examinations. From the total inspected shoats, 98 (17.9%) were recorded to be affected with C. tenuicollis. From the 349 inspected goats, C. tenuicollis was found in 71 (20.3%), and from the 196 inspected sheep, 27 (13.8%). The prevalence of C. tenuicollis according to their sex was higher in male sheep 16 (14.9%) and goats 51 (22.6%) than female sheep 11(12.35%) and goat 20 (16.12%). The infection rate of C. tenuicollis in regards to age group revealed that a higher incidence was recorded in adult goats 60 (22%) and sheep 20 (14.3%) than young goats 11 (14.4%) and sheep 7 (12.2%). Goats 27 (26.2%) and sheep 8 (20.5%, originated from Babile were more infected compared to goats and sheep from Jigjiga (23.7%, 17.3%) and Kebribayah (10.8%, 7.3%) respectively, with a statistically significant variations (P<0.05) among goats coming from various areas. Related to body condition scores and the disease, higher prevalence was noted in poor body condition of sheep and goat (18.6%, 27%) than medium (13.7%, 19.6%) and good (10.6%, 14%) body scores respectively, with significant difference in goat (P<0.05). Anatomical distribution of Metacestode revealed the highest proportions of C.tenuicollis in omentum followed by liver than any other organs. During the active abattoir investigation, a total of about 385,621.236 ETB (10,810.8 USD$) were lost due to organ condemnation. The findings imply that C. tenuicollis is widespread, may cause health Problems for shoats, and may lead to economic loss for the country. This indicates that the problem must be controlled by reducing the number of stray dogs, deworming dogs, avoiding backyard executions, and properly disposing of infected viscera
Empowerment Strategies for the Community in the Mangrove Ecotourism Area through Creativity in Sei Nagalawan Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency, Indonesia
This research aims to explore the potential and empowerment of the community through creative economy in the ecotourism area of Sei Nagalawan Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency. By employing a triangulation data approach, various perspectives were obtained, including insights from experts in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Sumatera Utara. The ecotourism area offers natural attractions like mangroves, unique processed products, and the phenomenon of shifting sands. The central role in community empowerment is held by the Mangrove Conservation Group of Muara Baimbai. Through SWOT analysis, the study identified several influencing factors, such as group institution support, limited government assistance, and underutilization of technology in marketing. The research findings indicate that ecotourism has a positive impact on the local economy and community well-being, but there are still obstacles to overcome. The significance of this research lies in providing support for ecotourism management through empowerment strategies, including technological utilization, expanding partnership networks, and enhancing human resource competencies. The conclusion emphasizes the need for greater government support, effective technology utilization, and a holistic approach to environmental conservation and community empowerment for sustainable development in the ecotourism area
