Socioeconomic Profile of Learners in the Bangladesh Armed Forces: Insights from Open and Distance Learning
Bangladesh Open University (BOU) offers a specialized programme called HSC niche-1 that is intended for troops in the country\u27s armed services. This programme has been operating successfully since 2014, and throughout the past years, a sizable number of students have graduated. These students are the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force\u27s entry-level soldiers. This paper\u27s primary goal is to ascertain the socioeconomic profile of the HSC niche-1 learner’s families. The author has attempted to investigate the learners’ socioeconomic situation by looking at their home location, income, occupation, and level of education. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods have been used in this study. Interviews were conducted with 225 learners who successfully completed the niche-1 programme utilizing a standardized questionnaire. Three focus group discussions (FGD) have been conducted to gather qualitative data. In total, 25 students took part in the FGD. According to the report, the majority of armed forces students came from moderately solvent households. The study found that a substantial portion of the students come from low-income backgrounds. The learner\u27s families (parents) are not highly educated and not very wealthy. From a social standpoint, the majority of students come from middle-class and lower-middle-class backgrounds. Then, a sizable portion of the students were from households with poor socioeconomic status
Synchronous Granulosa Cell Tumor of the Ovary and Urothelial Carcinoma of the Urinary Bladder: A Rare Case Report
The incidence of secondary primary malignancies (SPM) has been reported to range from 1.33% to 5.8% according to the location of the primary cancer and follow up duration. The term \u27Synchronous Malignancy\u27 is used when two or more malignancies appear within 6 months whether presenting in same or different organ with a different histology or morphology. Synchronous malignancies like these always carry a diagnostic challenge for the physician. Radiographic imaging collaborated with Histopathology and Immunohistochemistry are mandatory to form final diagnosis. Here we present a case of 56 year old female, known case of urinary bladder presenting with synchronous granulosa cell tumor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of Urothelial carcinoma of the Urinary bladder presenting with synchronous malignancy of Granulosa cell tumor of the Ovary. Treatment in this case was done according to standard guidelines with acknowledgement of possible drug drug interactions
Bioremediation Potentials of Chlorella Vulgaris on Water Samples from Ikose Stream (Tributary of Oba River) Ogbomoso, Nigeria
Aim: The aim of the study is to evaluate the potentials of Chlorella vulgaris as a phycoremediation tools of water samples collected from Ikose stream, a tributary of Oba river in Ogbomoso.
Study Design: The study employed an experimental study design.
Place and Duration of Study: Samples were collected in November 2021 and the study was conducted between December 2021 to May 2022. The research was carried out in the Microbiology Central Research Laboratory of Pure and Applied Biology Department, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria.
Methodology: The water sample was collected from Ikose water reservoir in Ogbomoso and the dried biomass of Chlorella vulgaris for the adsorption study was obtained from microbiology laboratory, LAUTECH. Three different concentrations of dried biomass of chlorella vulgaris were prepared by weighing 10mg, 50mg and 100mg into 80ml of the water sample with pH 5.0 and 8.0 in different bottles, the contact time was at an internal of 24h, 48h and 72h. At the end of each time duration, heavy metal concentration was determined by inductively coupled plasma- Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS).
Results: The ICP-MS analysis which revealed the presence of five different heavy metals which are Manganese, Nickel, Zinc, Lead, Iron. Iron shows the highest concentration of 9.789mg/L while manganese shows the lowest at 1.0977mg/L.
Conclusion: The result obtained for the bioabsorption of heavy metals in this study shows that C. vulgaris was efficient in the bioabsorption of most of the heavy metals identified from the water sample collected from the reservoir patients. These predictors, however, need further work to validate reliability
Effect of Facilities in Public Secondary Schools on Pupils’ Academic Performance: A Case Study of Comprehensive High School, Ajowa Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria
The study investigates the provision of educational facilities and equipment in public Secondary School in Ondo State, Nigeria and its effects on the student’s frequency of use as related to the academic performances of the students. Physical assessment of the facilities provided in the study area was done to identify the available facilities and equipment meant for the students. Structured questionnaire was administered to the students to assess the level of satisfaction with the available facilities and equipment and its impact on the academic performance of students. Thus, for the purpose of the study area and the primary targeted audience, we applied percentage analysis of the collated data for ease understanding and result implementations. The findings shown that students in the surveyed secondary school exhibit good satisfaction with the facilities available in the school as it enhanced their frequencies of use of the facilities and exhibits positive impact on their academic performance. High percentage of the students examined with good satisfaction and frequent use of the available educational facilities and equipment recorded good academic performance as shown in Table 3
Impact of Visual Attention and Useful Field of View in Driving: A Review
Driving includes a complex task of visual information processing and cognitive functions. Two of the most studied and complex factors in this context are visual attention and the useful field of view. These visual tasks are interconnected and play a crucial role in driving safety and hence have to be incorporated in the comprehensive assessment in the evaluation of driving performances.
Aim of the review is to delve into the significance of visual attention and UFOV in driving, exploring their relationship with driving performance, factors that influence them, and potential interventions to enhance these cognitive abilities. Articles were selected based on the topic relevance and methodological rigor. Further articles were selected based on the cross-referencing from the relevant articles. The search included articles from the year 2003 and further. Articles in languages other than English were not included
Results show that Visual attention is important for viewing and reacting to relevant information from clutter. Problems with visual attention can lead to delayed reaction time in perception of hazards, hence resulting in accidents. Reduced Useful field of vision may lead to limitations on peripheral information processing that can impact driving related tasks.
This narrative review aims at providing the basic understanding of the existing literature on Visual attention and useful field of view. It also covers the impact of these factors on driving performance and safety, influencing factors, existing literature, and future scope. 
Performance Evaluation of a Low-cost Cold Storage System on Fruits and Vegetables in Rural Areas
This paper evaluates the performance of a low-cost cold storage system developed to preserve the quality and extend the shelf life of perishable agricultural produce, including fruits and vegetables. The low-cost cold storage system was constructed using locally available materials and energy-efficient components, the system aims to offer an affordable and accessible solution for small and medium-scale farmers in the rural areas of Nigeria. Internal temperature control and stability, the performance parameter was assessed under varying load conditions using selected produce. The system effectively maintained optimal storage conditions, significantly reducing post-harvest losses and maintaining the freshness of fruits and vegetables over an extended period compared to ambient storage. This is particularly critical in regions within the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone, where high ambient temperatures contribute heavily to postharvest losses, threatening food security and sustainability. The smart cold storage unit, designed with a capacity of 20kg and a temperature range of -17°C to 55°C, stored fruits (mango and pineapple) at 9°C and vegetables (cabbage and carrot) at 0°C, while control samples were left at ambient temperatures ranging from 31.4°C to 35.2°C. After 5 hours, produce stored in the system exhibited significantly lower weight loss: mango (0.7% vs. 1.9%), pineapple (0.75% vs. 2.75%), cabbage (1% vs. 3.5%), and carrot (2.1% vs. 7.6%). These results demonstrate the system\u27s effectiveness in reducing deterioration caused by high temperatures, slowing respiration rates, and extending shelf life. The cold storage unit\u27s consistent performance and minimal energy consumption make it ideal for rural or off-grid use, especially when powered by renewable energy. Overall, this study underscores the potential of smart, low-cost cold storage technologies as sustainable solutions for reducing food waste and enhancing food security in temperature-sensitive regions
Structural Performance of Reused GFRP Bars in Reinforced Concrete Beams: A Sustainable Approach to Concrete Reinforcement
Construction demolition waste is a growing environmental concern in developing countries like Ghana due to rapid urban expansion. Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars, known for their high tensile strength, full linear-elastic response, corrosion resistance, non-conductive and lightweight nature, offer a sustainable alternative to steel reinforcement. However, their disposal remains challenging due to their non-biodegradable nature. Reusing and recycling GFRP bars present a viable solution, minimizing waste and reducing the construction sector’s carbon footprint. This research focused on reused GFRP bars recovered from previously tested beams that failed due to concrete crushing, based on concrete controlled sections, while leaving the GFRP bars intact. The mechanical properties of the reused GFRP bars were evaluated to provide holistic data for this study. Five beam specimens with varying concrete strengths (23.1 N/mm², 15.6 N/mm², 16.90 N/mm², 16.02 N/mm², and 22.86 N/mm²) were reinforced with 12 mm reused GFRP bars at tensile reinforcement ratios of 0.71%, 0.94%, 0.86%, 2.11%, and 2.11%, combined with a fixed steel shear reinforcement (8 mm bars at 200 mm stirrup spacing) aimed at hybrid reinforcement respectively. These beams were subjected to four-point monotonic loading to assess their structural performance. Key parameters examined included ultimate flexural strength, deflection, cracking mode and failure mode. Experimental results revealed that the reused GFRP bars had retained their characteristic linear-elastic stress-strain behavior and high tensile strength without notable loss in mechanical performance. All reused GFRP-reinforced concrete beams exhibited linear-elastic behavior up to failure, with average experimental failure loads exceeding theoretical predictions by a factor of 1.47. Failure modes included diagonal tension failure and concrete crushing was predicted by theoretical analysis. Increasing the concrete compressive strength and tensile reinforcement ratio of reused GFRP bars improved structural behavior under bending loads, attributed to the high tensile capacity, improved stiffness, and bonding properties of the bars, similar to the findings observed in the virgin GFRP RC beams in their maiden form. These results highlight the superior durability and reusability of GFRP bars and their potential to enhance the sustainability of reinforced concrete structures, marking a significant step toward the practical reuse of composite materials in construction
Exploration of Chatbots in Mathematics Education for Innovative Learning Process
Aims: This study aimed to explore the potential of chatbots in mathematics education by introducing them as an innovative learning tool for Bachelor of Secondary Education Math students. Specifically, the study seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of how chatbots can be integrated into the mathematics learning process. Ultimately, this study aims to enhance the knowledge and understanding of chatbots’ capabilities and their impact on educational environments, thereby contributing to improved educational outcomes in mathematics.
Study Design: This study employed a mixed-methods research approach. This method is well-suited for this research as it combines both qualitative and quantitative methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of the experiences faced by mathematics students in integrating chatbots into their learning process.
Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at the University of Eastern Philippines, Laoang Campus, Laoang, Northern Samar, during the school year 2024-2025.
Methodology: The researchers included Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) Mathematics students from the University of Eastern Philippines, Laoang Campus, during the school year 2024–2025, who have actively used chatbots in their mathematics education.30 Participants were selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involved semi-structured one-on-one interviews and survey questionnaires. Thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data from interviews, while descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage) were used to analyze quantitative survey data on chatbot usage.
Results: Out of 30 mathematics students, Cici was reported as the most frequently used chatbot among mathematics students, followed by ChatGPT and Copilot. Other chatbots like Meta AI, Perplexity, and Math AI were also noted, with less usage reported for Gemini, Question AI, Gauth Math, Sizzling, and Quillbot. It also revealed that chatbots assisted students with problem-solving in mathematics, enhanced conceptual understanding, ensured accuracy and validity, expanded mathematical knowledge, improved accessibility and convenience, boosted student confidence and engagement, and provided a student-friendly and time-saving learning experience, issues like dependency on chatbots, subscriptions or paywall issues, lack of details or clarity, inaccurate or unreliable answers, and internet connectivity issues were commonly mentioned. In response, students recommended strategies such as cross-verification of answers, avoiding over-reliance on chatbots, using multiple chatbots, clarifying or specifying questions, improving access and free tools, responsible use, and student discipline.
Conclusion: Chatbots like Cici, ChatGPT, and Copilot play a growing role in mathematics education, aiding students in problem-solving and conceptual understanding. While they enhance accessibility and engagement, challenges such as dependency and accuracy concerns exist. Students advocate for responsible usage, cross-checking answers, and refining queries to ensure AI tools support independent learning rather than replace it
Prevalence and Risk Factors of Adolescent Depression in Urban and Rural Bangladesh: A Cross-Sectional Study
Aims: Adolescent depression is a significant concern in Bangladesh, as many young people experience depression without access to adequate treatment. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of depression and the factors contributing to this mental health issue among adolescents in urban and rural Bangladesh.
Study Design: Cross sectional study.
Sample: This study was conducted with 389 adolescents in grades 8 to 10 from Dhaka and Noakhali districts.
Methodology: Data were gathered through a questionnaire that included questions about socio-demographics, lifestyle factors, and mental health. X2 test and logistic regression model were used for analysis purpose. All statistical analysis were performed in STATA (16.0).
Results: A total of 35.21% of adolescents reported experiencing depressive symptoms, with a higher prevalence among females (36.8%) compared to males (32.9%). Socio-demographic factors such as gender, place of residence, and school grade were significantly associated with depression. Logistic regression analysis revealed that screen-based sedentary behaviors (SBSBs) like social media use (OR: 1.06; 95% CI: 0.45–2.72), high screen time (over 2 hours per day; OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 0.69-2.54), and sleep disturbances (OR: 1.33; 95% CI: 0.76-2.63) were significantly related to depressive symptoms.
Conclusions: Depressive symptoms are widespread among adolescents in both urban and rural areas of Bangladesh. Consequently, it is essential to implement urgent measures to mitigate the rise of depression among Bangladeshi adolescents
Towards a Greener Future: Addressing Infrastructural Challenges in E-waste Management
E-Waste Management system (Scrapmanager) represents a crucial step toward addressing the escalating global crisis of electronic waste (e-waste). As technology advances at an unprecedented pace, the rapid obsolescence of electronic devices poses significant environmental and health risks. We are facing issues in e-waste management at three levels. Firts this sector is diminated by informal infrastructure like kbarialas. Second there is not enough authorized recycling facilities in proportion with the amount of e-waste generated. Latly people are not much aware about the e-waste recycling recycling. Also the policies about the e-waste management are not strategically placed. Our proposed model the scrapmanager is a step to create a sustainable ecosystem by bridging the gap between responsible disposal and environmental preservation. Key features of this system are clean UI design which makes it accessible to all, connects users with certified e-waste collectors across cities. Our proposed system (Scrapmanager) educates users about impact of e-waste through informative articles, infographics, and FAQs. This system contributes to economic growth and sustainable development of the earth. Aim of this system is to protect the environment from the hazardous element used in electronic devices. This system is a platform to connect e-waste sources with the right recycling facilities. Scrapmanager isn’t just a system, it’s a promise—to our planet, future generations, and collective responsibility
