Intrathoracic Kidney Associated with Bochdalek Hernia: A Case Report with Renal and Pulmonary Function Assessment

    No full text
Aims: To describe a rare presentation of intrathoracic renal ectopia associated with a right-sided Bochdalek hernia, incidentally identified during evaluation for acute respiratory symptoms, and to highlight its potential impact when combined with underlying pulmonary disease. Presentation of Case: A 70-year-old male, chronic smoker, was admitted for dyspnea and fever. Thoracic CT (Computed Tomography) revealed right-sided pleuropneumopathy in emphysematous lungs and incidentally identified a right intrathoracic ectopic kidney associated with a homolateral Bochdalek hernia. Renal morphology and function were normal, and the patient reported no abdominal or urinary symptoms. Discussion: Intrathoracic renal ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly, occurring in less than 5% of ectopic kidney cases. It is frequently associated with a Bochdalek hernia due to pleuroperitoneal membrane fusion failure. Typically asymptomatic, it is often discovered incidentally during thoracic imaging. Its intrathoracic position may reduce ipsilateral lung volume, and while renal function usually remains preserved, respiratory function may be further impaired in the presence of underlying lung disease. In this case, the coexistence of emphysema, pneumonia, and reduced thoracic space likely contributed to respiratory compromise. Standard radiography may suggest a thoracic mass, but definitive diagnosis relies on CT, ultrasound, or MRI. Conclusion: Intrathoracic kidney with Bochdalek hernia is usually asymptomatic but may become clinically relevant when associated with pulmonary disease due to reduced respiratory capacity. Awareness of this entity helps prevent misdiagnosis and supports accurate assessment of thoracic symptoms

Students’ achievement and attitude toward Developmental Psychology often remain low due to the abstract nature of the course and reliance on traditional lecture methods, which limit engagement, interaction, and retention of psychological concepts. This study investigated the effect of interactive whiteboard (IWB) integration on students’ achievement and attitude in Developmental Psychology II at Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri. Guided by four research questions and four hypotheses tested at a 0.05 significance level, the study adopted a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The population comprised 45 third- year students, and purposive sampling was used to assign 29 students to the experimental group and 16 to the control group. Data were collected using the Developmental Psychology Achievement Test (DPAT) and the Students’ Learning Attitudinal Scale (SLAS), which were validated by experts and yielded reliability coefficients of 0.81 and 0.77, respectively. The experimental group received IWB-based instruction for five weeks, while the control group was taught using conventional lecture methods. The findings revealed that students taught with the interactive whiteboard achieved higher academic achievement and demonstrated improved attitudes toward Developmental Psychology, with female students showing slightly greater gains than their male counterparts. The findings demonstrate that IWB integration enhances students’ understanding, engagement, and academic performance while fostering positive attitudes. The study recommends adopting IWBs in teaching, providing lecturer training, and designing interactive lessons to support inclusive and effective learning. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that interactive whiteboard integration significantly enhances students’ achievement and attitude in Developmental Psychology

A Systematic Review of Public Relations Strategies in Ghanaian Universities: Implication for Higher Education Management

    No full text
In the competitive landscape of higher education, the corporate image of universities plays a pivotal role in attracting students, faculty, funding, and partnerships. This study examines the public relations strategies employed by the Universities to manage its corporate image. The term public relations or PR is a broad one and it has been conceptualised by different scholars in diverse ways. One of the most simplified definitions of the term was put forward that any attempt to portray oneself to others in a particular way is considered PR. Public relations is a strategic managerial activity that aims to establish and sustain mutually advantageous connections between an organisation and the general public. The outcome of these efforts significantly impacts the overall performance and outcomes of the organisation. Public relations play a vital role in the promotion and communication strategies. Furthermore, the author asserts that despite its significant potential in enhancing public awareness, cultivating market preferences, and protecting market products, its use remains rather seldom. The potential benefits of incorporating public relations as a strategic tool for enhancing corporate promotion have often been underestimated, resulting in missed opportunities for campaign success. The bulk of professions in existence today can be attributed to their roots in America and Europe, and public relations is no exception to this trend. In Nigeria, the field of public relations is seen as a significant economic function. It is noteworthy to acknowledge that the origins of public relations practise in both the United States and the United Kingdom can be traced back to the 19th century. The early initiation of Public Relations in these nations may contribute to the high level of professionalism observed in the field. This study contributes to the understanding of public relations in higher education institutions and provides practical insights for universities and similar institutions seeking to enhance their corporate image

Legal Framework for Proof of Medical Negligence in Nigeria

    No full text
Medical negligence remains a critical concern in Nigeria, reflecting the interplay of legal, ethical, and healthcare dynamics. This paper examined the legal framework governing the proof of medical negligence, focusing on key statutes, judicial precedents, and systemic challenges. The 1999 Constitution, the Evidence Act (2011), the National Health Act, and the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act form the core legislative instruments analyzed. Despite these legal provisions, significant barriers such as fragmented statutes, ambiguities in evidentiary standards, high litigation costs, and limited patient awareness hinder effective implementation. The research adopted a doctrinal research methodology, analyzing primary and secondary legal sources to identify gaps and propose reforms. It highlighted the role of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms as a complementary approach to traditional litigation, offering cost-effective and timely solutions to medical negligence disputes. A comparative analysis with international best practices underscores the need for judicial capacity-building, public awareness campaigns, and harmonization of existing laws to enhance consistency and accessibility in the legal process. Key findings reveal that while statutes like the National Health Act and the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act provide a framework for addressing medical negligence, their full potential remains unrealized due to enforcement challenges. The paper recommended integrating ADR mechanisms, aligning statutory provisions, and empowering both the judiciary and the public to foster accountability and justice. Ultimately, this paper contributed to the discourse on healthcare reform, advocating for a robust and cohesive legal framework that ensures patient protection, professional accountability, and trust in Nigeria’s healthcare system
