    Intracardiac Thrombi in Children: A Five-case Series and Literature Review

    Aims: The study reports a pediatric series of intracardiac thrombi and to discuss their clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects in the light of current literature. Study Design: Case series and literature review. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital, Rabat, Morocco, 2023–2024. Methodology: We retrospectively analyzed five pediatric patients aged 3 months to 13 years who were diagnosed with intracardiac thrombi of various etiologies. Clinical data, laboratory tests, imaging results, therapeutic strategies, and outcomes were collected from medical records. Results: The series included five children: one adolescent with hyperhomocysteinemia complicated by a left ventricular thrombus, a premature infant with a central venous catheter and right atrial thrombus, a 7‑month‑old with severe heart failure and left ventricular thrombus, a teenager with Behçet’s disease and right ventricular thrombus, and an infant with protein C/S deficiency and left ventricular thrombus. Management relied mainly on anticoagulation with low‑molecular‑weight heparin and vitamin K antagonists, alongside etiological treatments when indicated. Outcomes were variable: two patients died, two showed favorable recovery, and one was lost to follow‑up. Conclusion: Intracardiac thrombi in children are rare but potentially fatal conditions. Early recognition using echocardiography and timely initiation of anticoagulation are essential to prevent embolic complications. Prognosis depends on underlying pathology and rapid multidisciplinary management. Preventive strategies should address modifiable risk factors such as catheterization and uncorrected coagulation disorders

    Re-evaluation of Vehicular Heavy Metal Deposits on Roadside Soil in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

    This study assessed the level of contamination of selected heavy metals (HMs), including Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn at four designated sampling locations: SP1, SP2, SP3 and SP4 in Eket, a city in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. Roadside soil specimens were gathered from these sites to form a composite sample. Standard method was used to analyze each soil sample, while the contamination levels of individual and combined HMs in soils were assessed by contamination factor (CF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), degree of contamination index (CDI), and pollution load index (PLI). The results revealed that all the HMs, except Cd, did not pose any environmental risk at all the sites, as CF and Igeo values for these metals were less than one respectively. However, Cd showed varying degrees of contamination across the sites, with a moderate environmental risk at SP2 and SP4, and a very strong environmental risk at SP1 and SP3. The combined effect of the HMs, as assessed by the CDI and PLI, showed differences, while CF and Igeo values for individual HMs were similar. The overall contamination at the sites, based on CDI, ranked as SP3. The results suggest possible health risks for the populace in these vicinities due to Cd exposure and recommend further investigation into the health risks associated with Cd in the region

    Confidence and Utilization of Counseling Services among First-year Students: Basis for Enhancing Services at the University of Eastern Philippines

    This study investigated the confidence and utilization of guidance and counseling services among first-year students at the College of Education, University of Eastern Philippines – Main Campus. Using a descriptive-correlational research design, the study aimed to determine students’ attitudes toward counseling services and examine the relationship between their level of confidence and service utilization. A total of 202 students were selected through simple random sampling from a population of 410. Data are collected using a standardized survey questionnaire, administered both in printed form and online via Google Forms, with completion of the form considered as consent in accordance with Republic Act 10173 (Data Privacy Act of 2012. Results revealed that while most students had a positive attitude toward counseling services, actual utilization remained moderate, with many respondents maintaining a neutral stance. Major barriers included social stigma, fear of judgment, concerns about confidentiality, and preference for support systems such as peers and family. Demographic variables such as age, sex, course, and major showed no significant influence on utilization. Notably, a weak negative correlation (r = -0.12, p = .03) was found between students’ confidence and their use of counseling services, suggesting that those with lower confidence may be more inclined to seek help. The study highlights the need for universities to increase student awareness, strengthen counselor visibility, build trust, and improve accessibility to counseling services. While the findings provide valuable insights, the study’s scope was limited to the College of Education. Future research involving more diverse academic groups and mixed-methods approaches is recommended to enhance generalizability and deepen understanding of help-seeking behavior among college students

    Technical and Soft Skills Preparedness of Electrical Technology Students for Industry Immersion

    This study aimed to examine the technical and soft skills preparedness of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology students majoring in Electrical Technology for their upcoming industry immersion. Using a descriptive research design, the study purposively sampled 43 second-year students from a university in Northern Philippines offering technical courses. Data was collected through a validated survey questionnaire assessing students’ competencies in technical domains—tools and equipment handling, electrical installation, technical knowledge, safety compliance, troubleshooting—and soft skills including communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and professionalism, rated on a 4-point Likert scale. Results revealed that students exhibited a very high level of preparedness overall, with the highest mean scores in electrical installation (3.70) and tools handling (3.67) among technical skills, and professionalism (3.67) and teamwork (3.60) among soft skills, while lower preparedness was noted in troubleshooting (3.23) and communication (3.12). Findings suggest that the program’s outcomes-based and experiential learning strategies effectively integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, fostering industry-ready graduates. Nevertheless, targeted improvements in technical documentation, complex troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills are recommended to enhance adaptability and workplace effectiveness. The results have practical implications for curriculum reform, highlighting the need for scenario-based exercises, documentation-intensive activities, and advanced troubleshooting modules, as well as strengthened industry partnerships for mentorship and authentic project experiences. By addressing these gaps, technical education programs can better equip students with both the technical and interpersonal competencies essential for professional success, promoting employability, confidence, and adaptability in dynamic industrial environments

    Engineering Process Design and Manufacturing Framework for an Autonomous Power Generating System

    Process design is important in achieving technical feasibility and economic efficiency of the engineering systems. The consideration of process design in engineering manufacturing products is still a challenge for design engineers. The study aimed to develop an engineering process design, and manufacturing frame work for an Autonomous Power Generating System (APGS). With the help of the methodology, three main steps of process design, product analysis, process selection, and operation determination are combined to provide a functional and cost-effective prototype. The product analysis result revealed the number of components and material types of the APGS. Findings indicate that seven (7) major engineering materials were adopted for the development of APGS. Twelve (12) components were categorized into three (3) major assemblies, with four (4) of the parts being made locally and the remaining eight (8) purchased. The study supplied an alternative power source that was able to work autonomously in the off-grid areas. Finally, the paper shows that locally developed APGS is capable of providing viable and sustainable production of energy at a lower cost, which will help in technology advancement and energy independence in Nigeria

    Evaluation of Noise Pollution Level of Selected Orthodox Church in Khana Metropolis of Rivers States, Nigeria

    The Evaluation of noise pollution level of selected Orthodox Church in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, has been carried out using sound level meter (S/N 18017328) with range of 30-130 dBA. with the aim of evaluating the noise pollution level of the church during Sunday service and its effects on members. Fifteen (15) strategic sections of the church was considered for the measurement of noise pollution level during Sunday service. The obtained average value of the noise pollution level of selected sampling points within the church during the Sunday service is 95.6 dBA, 96.5 dBA, 84.7 dBA and 89.6 dBA for Praise time, offering time, Bible reading time and Preaching time respectively. The obtained mean value is all higher than the stipulated standard of 55.0 dBA for residential area as recommended by NESREA. Higher percentage of the noise pollution level was obtained with the Choir and Musical sections of the church. These higher noise percentages within these two sections of the church might be due to it closeness to the noise generating sources within the church while the least percentage was obtained at the children section of the church. This high noise pollution level within the church during service hours’ cloud be due to the positioning of the noise generating sources. Over exposure of Church members to noise pollution during the church service might lead to hearing impairment or hearing lost and other related health effects. Therefore, the church should be protected with noise absorbing equipment, for conducive Sunday service and also to reduced other related health risk on members

    Artificial Intelligence in Nursing in Low-income Settings: Readiness Criteria

    In this paper, we explore required criteria for low-income countries to exploit the potential of AI in nursing. We had dubbed this as “Readiness Criteria”. Generative artificial intelligence tools summarize data into text for expedited information-gathering and content creation. They are gaining use in clinical settings to help nursing staff improve productivity. There are knowledge gaps between experts in AI and nursing professionals. Bridging such gaps, will be the starting point for appropriately applying AI in nursing. As use of AI in nursing becomes prominent, appropriate risk mitigation measures need to be put in place, including, appropriate risk governance frameworks and tools to manage AI driven nursing practices. Most important, low resource settings need to put in place readiness criteria to support them to enjoy the fruits of AI in nursing. Such readiness criteria include having in place data governance frameworks, addressing knowledge gaps, and investing in public data infrastructure

    An Assessment of Indigenous Ethnic Group Perception on Baylon’s Quality Patient Nursing Care Theory in Selected Barangay Communities in Kalinga Province in the Philippines

    Background: This research study entailed assessing the “Perception” of the selected barangay communities in Kalinga Province in the Philippines because they live in high lands and healthcare services are crucial in this area. This is not only due to the high elevation but also because of the long distance from the National Government, where all the health supplies are sourced. Aims: This study aims to assess the perceptions of indigenous ethnic group from selected barangay communities in Kalinga Province regarding the quality of patient nursing care and to generate essential recommendations for the Indigenous Ethnic Group, staff nurses, doctors, hospital administrators, as well as officials from the Department of Health and the National Government. The valuable insights obtained from this study will be instrumental in driving positive changes in healthcare delivery. Methods: The study employed a Quantitative Descriptive nonparametric method design in this study to assess the perception of the communities in terms of factors to consider if patients will submit to hospitalization or not, determinants of quality patient health care, factors that boost patients\u27 recovery, expected government programs, and self-image problems due to their diagnosis. Percentage was used to identify the ranking of categories and Welch t-test was used to identify the difference between the perception of the two barangay communities. Results: The study showed that the mean scores and standard deviation of Group 1 Barangay community of Agbannwag and Group 2 Barangay community of Malalao were 89.45 (SD=14.72) and 96.67 (SD=2.52), respectively, and the statistical analysis of the Welch t-test calculated the t-value as -3.5854, with a p-value of 0.0006964 less than alpha, the null hypothesis is rejected and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: The study concludes that both selected barangay communities of Indigenous Ethnic Group from Kalinga Province differs significantly in their perception on Baylon’s Quality Patient Nursing Care Theory but both barangay communities recognized the importance of Baylon’s Theory

    A Literature Review on Interrelationship of Farmer’s Knowledge and Attitude in Fertilizer Application on Boro Rice Production in Bangladesh

    For maintaining sustainable agriculture and production of maximum crop yield it is required to add the proper amount of fertilizer on time through observation, investigation and elevation of the interrelationship of the farmer\u27s knowledge and attitude toward fertilizer application. The use of fertilizer is affected by farmers’ knowledge and attitude as they are interrelated. In order to influence the future fertilizer decision of farmers several factors and effects are analysed in this study. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the interrelationship of farmer’s knowledge and attitude regarding fertilizer application in Boro rice production as it is the most contributing crop in Sunamganj district of Bangladesh. Fertilizer performs major role in Boro Rice production. In haor areas farmer chiefly cultivate Boro rice. Proper knowledge and improved attitude have significant contribution to increase Boro Rice production. This review highlights the various factors that increase knowledge and attitude toward fertilizer application which lead to improved social and economic condition of farmers. Finally, the review concludes with recommendation for policy makers, civil society organization, extension agents and researcher

    Understanding the Impact of Algorithmic Trading on Indian Financial Markets: A Quantitative Analysis

    This paper explores the transformative impact of algorithmic trading on the Indian financial markets, with a focus on market volatility, liquidity, and efficiency. The aim of the paper is to examine the impact of Algorithmic trading on Indian financial market and to assess the role of high-frequency trading in market liquidity and efficiency. In study design, used a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative analysis of historical trading data from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) with qualitative insights from regulatory filings and industry reports. The study employed the time series analysis, event studies and regression analysis techniques for analyzed the Market volatility (standard deviation of returns), liquidity (bid-ask spread), and trading volumes. The findings highlight significant benefits, including enhanced liquidity, tighter spreads, and improved execution speed. However, challenges persist, such as short-term volatility spikes and the risk of systemic disruptions during flash crashes. Regulatory interventions, like SEBI’s circuit breakers and AI surveillance systems, have mitigated some risks, but ongoing challenges in equitable infrastructure access remain. The study concludes with recommendations to balance technological innovation with market stability, advocating a hybrid approach that integrates algorithmic precision with human oversight to ensure efficiency and resilience in an increasingly automated trading ecosystem
