    No full text
During the last decade, scholars have studied the behavior of decision-making in newsvendor settings and have identified numerous behavior patterns for deviating from normative behavior. However, there is a dearth of research which have examined the influence of individual heterogeneity on decision-making in newsvendor settings. This study examines the level of construal (Abstract and concrete) using construal level theory (CLT) on performance in newsvendor games. In addition, this study measures the cognitive reflection of individuals using cognitive reflection test (CRT) ex-ante to analyze the true impact of how people construe a problem and its impact on their decision-making

Enhancing Early English Exposure for Rural Left-Behind Children: Integrating Home-Kindergarten Collaboration and Learning Qualities Development

    No full text
This study examines the challenges faced by rural left-behind children in gaining early English exposure and explores the potential of home-kindergarten collaboration to address these issues. Conducted in three villages in Guangxi Province, a rural area with limited educational resources and a high proportion of left-behind children due to parental migration, the study involved in-depth interviews with 15 left-behind children, 15 parents or guardians, and 10 kindergarten teachers. Despite recent improvements in rural education under the national Rural Revitalization Strategy, barriers such as insufficient caregiver support, inadequate resources, and weak family-kindergarten communication remain significant. While kindergartens introduce English through engaging activities such as songs and games, the lack of family involvement limits the long-term impact of these efforts. The study emphasizes the importance of fostering learning qualities such as curiosity, persistence, and engagement as essential foundations for improving early English learning. To address these challenges, it proposes strategies including caregiver training, simplified take-home activities, and structured teacher-caregiver communication to strengthen collaboration. By addressing gaps in rural early childhood education and the unique needs of left-behind children, this study provides actionable insights for enhancing early English exposure, cultivating positive learning qualities, and promoting educational equity in underprivileged contexts

    No full text
The integration of the social networks in educational practices may bring increased student engagement and may promote collaboration and lead to improved learning outcomes. However, previous studies have primarily focused on the impact of social networks on the academic performance, neglecting to explore the factors influencing social networks usage among university students in Tanzania. This study evaluates factors influencing social networks usage among university students in Tanzania, providing insights for educators, policymakers, and students to enhance its productive application, by informing policy making, curriculum design, and training programs in Tanzanian higher learning institutions. Using a descriptive research design and a mixed research approach, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews from a randomly selected sample of 122 undergraduate students in human resource management at Mzumbe University, while valid responses were 100. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analysed through thematic analysis. The study revealed university students in Tanzania, particularly at Mzumbe University, are motivated using social networks by several factors, including education, interaction, information, and refreshments. It was also noted that 66% of university students use social networks as a tool or instrument to remove stress and boredom on a daily basis, while others use them to pass time. Based on the findings, it is recommended that universities in Tanzania should encourage their students to properly use social networks to increase leadership skills, build networks to socialise with different groups of people, and interact with people of the same profession to share professionalism and Professional opportunities. Universities also should incorporate social networking tools in academic practices using official sites where students can meet and share educational content apart from holding discussions; in this way, the students will still be connected with social networks for the appropriate academic purposes without the risk of the nonessential applications

Assessing Mobile Money Security Threats and User Satisfaction in Bushenyi District, Uganda

    No full text
Mobile money services have revolutionized financial transactions in Uganda, particularly in rural areas like Bushenyi District, by providing accessible and convenient financial solutions. However, increasing usage has led to growing concerns over fraud, cybercrime, and security vulnerabilities. Users face risks such as unauthorized access, identity theft, and phishing scams, which can undermine trust. Understanding these threats and their impact on user confidence is essential for improving security and ensuring long-term adoption. This study examines key security threats affecting mobile money users in Bushenyi District, focusing on their prevalence, impact on user satisfaction and behavior, and possible solutions. A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating surveys and interviews with mobile money users, agents, and service providers. Quantitative analysis measured user satisfaction and behavioral intentions, while qualitative insights provided a deeper understanding of user concerns. Results highlight security risks such as SIM card fraud, phishing attacks, and unethical agent practices. Despite a high satisfaction score (19.74), security concerns affect users\u27 willingness to continue using mobile money services. A strong behavioral intention score (16.292) suggests that satisfied users are likely to stay engaged, but security fears can hinder further adoption. Strengthening fraud prevention, enhancing user awareness, and enforcing stricter regulatory oversight are crucial to improving trust. Mobile money providers should prioritize real-time fraud detection and user education to ensure continued adoption and confidence in these services

    No full text
This study evaluated traditional Malaysian eggplant cultivars (terung rapuh and terung telunjuk) compared to commercial varieties (terung panjang and terung bulat) for pest and disease resistance, nutritional and phytochemical properties. The study was conducted at the Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (MARDI) in Serdang, Selangor during the period of January to November 2020. The eggplants were planted in single row planting with 90 cm between plants in the row and 200 cm between rows using Randomised Complete Block Design with three replicates. The proximate compositions and major elements analysis were conducted at accredited laboratory Unipeq, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The traditional cultivars demonstrated lower pest and disease incidence, particularly terung telunjuk, suggesting inherent resistance mechanisms. Nutritional analysis revealed that terung rapuh had the highest protein content (2.46%), carbohydrate (9.97%), energy value (223.1 kJ/100g) and essential micronutrients (calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, zinc). Furthermore, terung rapuh exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity with the lowest IC50 value (2.38 mg/ml) and highest total phenolic content (44.02 mg/g). These findings highlight the potential of traditional eggplant cultivars as valuable genetic resources for developing sustainable agriculture and promoting dietary diversity in Malaysia. Specifically, terung rapuh and terung telunjuk offer promising traits for breeding programs focused on enhanced pest and disease resistance, improved nutritional value, and increased antioxidant capacity

Gendered Experience of Migration in West Africa Fiction: Exploring African Female Protagonists in Contemporary Literature

    No full text
This study investigates a few texts written by four female West African authors who explore the concept of home as it is viewed through the prism of migratory narratives. Unigwe\u27s on Black Sisters\u27 Street (2009), Darko\u27s Beyond the Horizon (1995), Adichie\u27s Americanah (2013), and Mbue\u27s Behold the Dreamers (2016) are among the works that examine how the experience of migration is gendered in addition to being complicated by issues of citizenship, class, and race. Analyses of the protagonists in the selected works by these authors demonstrate how subjectivity is problematically impacted by the dynamics of home and diaspora. Using textual analysis as a methodology to gather, arrange, analyse, and evaluate information about the gendered aspects of migration as it is expressed in the four texts that are the subject of the study even though each text has been the subject of numerous studies, this article brought them all under one methodological scrutiny which expanded their semantic potential by highlighting a novel "way of reading" and pointing to additional key opportunities for interacting with migrant experiences. In addition, it was not lost on the researcher that emigration is a world phenomenon affecting other areas such as Latin America and other parts of Asia. The results of this study among others explain why female immigrants are found in the Western hemisphere of the world and findings are hitched on economic lack of the migrants among other factors

Internal Control System and Fraud Mitigation: A Case of Selected SMEs in Nigeria

    No full text
Many SMEs in Nigeria struggle with the implementation of effective internal control systems. Internal controls, where they exist, are frequently weak, poorly documented, or inconsistently applied. Hence, this study examined the effect of internal control system on fraud mitigation: a case of selected SMEs in Nigeria. The specific objective was to ascertain the extent to which control activities and monitoring activities affect fraud mitigation among selected SMEs in Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted. A sample size of 196 respondents was calculated using Cochran Formula for sample size determination. Structured questionnaire was used in collecting the primary data for the study. In addition, the data collected were first presented using frequency distribution while the hypotheses were tested using multiple regression. It was found that: control activities have a positive and significant effect on fraud mitigation among selected SMEs in Nigeria (β = 0.418, p = 0.000); monitoring activities have a positive and significant effect on fraud mitigation among selected SMEs in Nigeria (β = 0.574, p = 0.000). In conclusion, when these enterprises embed structured procedures and maintain vigilant oversight within their operations, they create an environment less conducive to fraudulent practices. The study recommends that internal auditors and supervisory staff in SMEs should regularly conduct monitoring exercises, including audits and performance reviews, to ensure that existing controls are functioning effectively and fraud risks are promptly identified

    No full text
The study examined the influence of financial risk management on corporate performance of selected small-scale firms in Nigeria. The specific objective was to determine the extent to which operational risks and liquidity risks influence the corporate performance of selected small-scale firms in Nigeria. This study adopted a survey research design. The target population for this study consists of managers of small-scale firms in Nigeria. Using snowballing sampling technique, 35 managers of small-scale firms were selected from each of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, resulting in a total sample size of 210 respondents. Primary data for this study were collected using a structured questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was tested using Cronbach’s Alpha, which measures internal consistency. The data collected were first analyzed using frequency analysis to show the distribution of the responses to the research questions. For the inferential aspect, multiple regression analysis was used to test the two hypotheses developed in line with the study’s objectives. It was found that: operational risks have a significant negative influence on the corporate performance of selected small-scale firms in Nigeria (β = -0.272, p = 0.002); liquidity risks have a significant negative influence on the corporate performance of selected small-scale firms in Nigeria (β = -0.225, p = 0.026). In conclusion, financial risk, when left unmitigated, can undermine the core functional and financial structures of small enterprises, leading to inefficiencies, reduced profitability, and in severe cases, business failure. By implication, these outcomes emphasize the importance of structured, proactive financial risk management practices in helping small businesses withstand economic pressures and uncertain market dynamics. The study recommends that small-scale firm owners and managers should invest in enhancing their internal risk management frameworks, including the adoption of regular operational audits and process optimization strategies to identify and mitigate operational inefficiencies
