    A Rare Presentation of Classical Homocystinuria: Cerebral Thrombophlebitis in an Adolescent

    Homocystinuria is a rare constitutional aminoacidopathy characterized by elevated plasma and urinary homocysteine levels, most often due to cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) deficiency, and represents the second most frequent metabolic encephalopathy after phenylketonuria. We report the case of a 13-year-old adolescent who presented with a painful, red left eye associated with intense photophobia and helmet-type headaches without signs of intracranial hypertension. Cerebral MR angiography revealed thrombophlebitis of the left sigmoid sinus, and plain foot radiographs showed mild bone demineralization. The diagnosis of homocystinuria was suspected based on clinical and radiological findings and confirmed by qualitative blood and urine amino acid chromatography, which demonstrated elevated methionine in blood and homocysteine in urine, along with markedly increased plasma homocysteine levels (155 µmol/L). Treatment with folic acid, pyridoxine, and vitamin B12 resulted in stabilization of clinical signs. Homocystinuria remains a rare but severe disease, with its prognosis largely determined by neurovascular complications and intellectual disability related to circulating homocysteine levels. Early recognition is crucial, particularly in cases of stroke associated with a marfanoid phenotype, to reduce complications and enable preventive measures in siblings

    User Awareness and Understanding of Digital Privacy Policies in Ghana: An Exploratory Study

    Aims: This study explored how well users understand data privacy policies and what factors shape their behaviour toward them. Study Design:  A quantitative cross-sectional research design was used in this study. Place and Duration of Study: The research was conducted at the Department of Computer Science, Garden City University in Kumasi between September 2024 and September 2025. Methodology: Data were collected from 172 Computer Science and Information Technology students, using a structured questionnaire administered through Google Forms. The collected data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 25. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations were calculated. Also, Chi-square tests, correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis were done to explore relationships and determine significant factors influencing user behaviours regarding digital privacy. Results: Overall, students showed a moderate level of awareness and understanding of data privacy policies, with average scores between 3.58 and 4.27 (overall mean = 3.87, SD = 1.026). Most participants recognized that the core purpose of privacy policies is to protect personal information. Additionally, responses to behavioural factors showed mean scores ranging from 3.68 to 4.52 (overall mean = 4.05, SD = 1.167), pointing to a general agreement that these factors play a role in shaping user behaviour. The regression model’s Adjusted R Square value of 0.105 indicated that 10.5% of the variance in user behaviour was explained by the independent variables, indicating other behavioural factors were excluded in the model. Conclusion: The findings suggest that students are less likely to read lengthy privacy policies, implying a need for simpler and more accessible versions. Awareness campaigns could also help users understand why privacy policies matter. To gain a fuller picture of how behaviour evolves, future studies should consider a longitudinal approach

    Spectrum Efficiency Optimization for SWIPT-Enabled Hybrid Precoding in mm-Wave Massive MIMO-NOMA Systems

    Enhancing spectrum efficiency (SE) remains central to the evolution of 5G millimeter-wave (mm-wave) massive MIMO networks. This paper presents an integrated approach combining hybrid precoding and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for simultaneous information and power transfer. A three-stage framework is proposed: (1) a Dynamic Cluster-Head Selection algorithm that forms low-correlation user groups to reduce inter-beam interference; (2) a Compressed Sensing–Driven Committee Machine Design (CS-COMADE) that strengthens array gain and suppresses inter-user interference; and (3) an iterative joint power-allocation procedure that maximizes SE under energy and quality-of-service constraints. Simulation results show that the proposed method attains near-digital precoding performance—within 7% of fully digital zero-forcing benchmarks—while outperforming conventional MIMO-OMA and existing hybrid NOMA designs by up to 35% in SE. The proposed framework demonstrates strong scalability, offering a practical pathway for high-capacity, energy-aware mm-wave implementations in future 5G and beyond-5G systems

    Prevalence and Clinical Features of Glaucoma in Pediatric Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I: A Retrospective Descriptive Study

    Objective: To evaluate the prevalence, clinical characteristics, diagnostic challenges, and therapeutic outcomes of glaucoma in children diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidosis type I          (MPS I). Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 12 pediatric patients (aged 4–17 years) with confirmed MPS I, followed jointly by the Pediatrics and Ophthalmology departments of HMIMV Hospital, Rabat. Results: All patients exhibited corneal opacification with normal anterior chamber depth. The iridocorneal angle was open in seven cases. Pachymetry ranged from 580 to 735 μm (mean = 667 μm). Adjusted IOP ranged between 15 and 59 mmHg (mean = 20 mmHg). Three patients (25%) were diagnosed as glaucomatous or glaucoma suspects. Patients received enzyme replacement therapy, and the glaucoma was treated medically, with follow up showing significant improvement of IOP and Cup/Disc ratio.  Conclusion: Glaucoma represents a challenging but significant ocular manifestation of MPS I. Prevalence of glaucoma in MPSs patients (ranged from 2.1% to 12.5%) indicated that it was worthy of attention and further study so that quality of life for MPSs patients could be improved.     Feeding Pattern of Alosa fallax in the Marine Waters off the Latakia Coast, Eastern Mediterranean: A Two-Year Seasonal Study

    Understanding fish feeding patterns is crucial for assessing trophic interactions and sustainable fisheries management. This study examines the dietary composition of Alosa fallax, a commercially significant species within the Clupeidae family, in the marine waters off the coast of Latakia, in the eastern Mediterranean. A total of 2,400 specimens were collected using locally employed fishing techniques, including gillnets and purse nets, between October 20, 2021, and September 14, 2023. The sampled individuals exhibited a standard-length range of 10.4–21.19 cm (mean 14.27±3 cm) and a weight range of 15.72–102.81 g (mean 43.78±27.61 g), with a maximum body height averaging 3.01±0.59 cm. Dietary analysis revealed that A. fallax is a planktivorous species, consuming 12 different planktonic organisms classified into four major taxonomic groups:  Crustaceans ranked first in frequency (52.51%) and relative importance (49.59%), with a total of 8141 points. The crustaceans consisted of copepods (mainly Calanoidea), as well as malacostracans, including species from the orders Euphausiacea, Isopoda, Amphipoda, and Decapoda (such as Zoea, Penaeus, Crab megalopa, and Mysidacea)., Phytoplankton: Ranked second, with a frequency of 8.94% and a relative importance of 14.07%, totaling 6262 points. Organic Detritus: Ranked third, with a frequency of 14.68% and a relative importance of 12.37%, totaling 1348 points. Fish: Ranked fourth, with a frequency of 9.10% and a relative importance of 5.04%, totaling 1459 points. The fish consumed included species such as Anguilliformes (eel), Ophidion rochei (shriat), and Trachurus trachurus (horse mackerel). Polychaete Worms: Ranked last, with a frequency of 3.43% and a relative importance of 0.18%, totaling 85 points. This study enhances our ecological understanding of A. fallax feeding habits, providing valuable insights for fisheries management and the conservation of marine biodiversity along the Latakia coastline

    Reimagining Automotive Instruction in Philippine Higher Education through Artificial Intelligence (AI)

    With the rapid advancement of AI, industries worldwide are being transformed, from automotive technologies that increasingly rely on smart systems, automation, and data-driven solutions. In the Philippine higher education context, traditional automotive instruction has relied heavily on mechanical and technical skills, while integration within teaching and learning remains limited. This present study explores how AI can reimagine automotive instruction by investigating instructors\u27 perceptions of their awareness and readiness, challenges, and anticipated impact on teaching and student learning outcomes. This study used a descriptive research design and included ten purposively selected automotive technology instructors from a higher education institution in northern Philippines. It utilized structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews that allowed the gathering of data through both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Generally, instructors have positive perceptions about AI because it can help improve the quality of learning, offer personalized instruction, and increase motivation with simulations and interactive tools. Respondents have expressed their willingness to adopt AI; however, deficiencies in technical knowledge and a number of challenges that were identified, such as cost, technical reliability, and data privacy, are some concerns. For the instructors, AI will be an important tool in the future of automotive education to promote innovation, modernization, and alignment with Industry 4.0 standards. The study recommends that higher education institutions invest in AI resources, provide professional development for instructors, and develop policies to address technical, financial, and ethical challenges. By leveraging AI thoughtfully, Philippine higher education can better provide a world-class learning experience in automotive instruction toward producing industry-ready graduates and building the nation\u27s capacity to respond to emerging technological trends. &nbsp

    Strategies for Achieving Corporate Sustainability through Effective Financial Advisory in the U.S. Market

    Aim: To explore how financial advisory can promote corporate sustainability in the United States (U.S) market, incorporating sustainable business practices into financial goals. Study Design: A review of the financial advisory strategies to attain corporate sustainability in the U.S., with focus on literature from 2019 to 2024. Methodology: The research was based on a systematic literature review, examining sources from databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, SSRN, and Business Source Complete. The selected articles will discuss corporate sustainability, financial advisory strategies, and the U.S. market context. Results: The review identifies 25 key studies that outline the role of financial advisors in corporate sustainability. The studies explain the use of sustainability-oriented financial products, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) metrics, and long-term risk mitigation strategies in advising businesses. Tailored advisory solutions to corporate goals and industry regulations were found to considerably improve sustainability efforts while maintaining financial performance. Conclusions: Effective financial advisory practices have allowed U.S. corporations to navigate the complexities of sustainable development without compromising profitability. Indeed, these promising outcomes will require further research about their long-term effects and general economic implications

    Comparative Performance of Thirteen Grain Corn Commercial Hybrid Varieties in the Serdang Environment

    Selecting and evaluating hybrid varieties based on environmental suitability could enhance both growth performance and yield of grain corn cultivation, thereby improving the profitability of grain corn economic gains. This study aimed to compare the performance of thirteen commercial grain corn hybrid varieties from local and foreign sources in the MARDI Serdang, Malaysia environment. The experiment used a randomized complete block design with three replications for two planting seasons (July-November 2020 and February-June 2021). Seven agronomic and yield parameters were recorded and analyzed using ANOVA and DMRT analysis. The  results revealed a significant interaction between planting seasons and hybrids for  days to 50% pollen shed, plant height and Cut Cutting Test (CCT) yield. Season 2 produced higher component yield traits but not significantly different for CCT yield. Considering overall individual performance, the best performing varieties were DK9979C, GWG5005, and P4554,   which showed the best yield and were consistent over seasons, especially in fluctuated environment factors. In contrast, the varieties GWG888 and DK9950C produced the least, with yields of 4279.2 kg/ha and 4051.2 kg/ha, respectively, marking a decline of over 50.0% in the second season compared to the first season. This result shows that season influenced the yield and performance of some tested hybrids. This study provides useful information for grain corn farmers and breeders in selecting good adaptability hybrid varieties suitable for the Serdang environment

    Exploring the Impact of Emotional Congruence in Music on Memory Recall of University Students: An Experimental Study

    Aims: This study examined the conditions under which music influences memory recall, focusing on the effects of emotionally congruent music, emotionally incongruent music, and the absence of music on memory performance. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at a private university in Digos City. Data collection took place during the latter half of the 2024 academic semester to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the findings, as participants were expected to engage with minimal academic distractions. Methodology: The research design is a true experimental between-group research design involving random assignment to ensure high internal validity. 45 participants were randomly assigned during the experiment. Results: This study aimed to determine whether music and emotional congruence significantly affect memory recall. The Kruskal-Wallis test, a non-parametric alternative to one-way ANOVA, was employed to analyze the data. The chi-squared statistic χ² = 3.76, with df = 2, assesses differences in memory recall across three conditions: Emotionally Congruent, Emotionally Incongruent, and No Music. The effect size was calculated as ε = 0.0854, indicating that approximately 8.54% of the variance in memory recall was attributed to the emotional congruence of the music. However, the small effect size suggests these differences have limited practical significance. Additionally, with a p-value of 0.153 (p > 0.05), the results demonstrate no statistically significant effect of music and emotional congruence on memory recall. Conclusion: This study has several limitations that may affect the significance of its findings, such as participants\u27 emotional states, past experiences, and environmental factors like lighting, temperature, or noise. To address these issues, future research should consider using a standardized setting, ensuring consistent participant preparation, and including more similar characteristics between groups to enhance internal validity. The study will be replicated with stricter controls to validate further and improve the findings, and external variables will be examined more closely. Additionally, while the experimental design provides valuable insights, its conclusions may be less generalizable. Future studies could adopt correlational designs to expand and complement these findings

    Hepato-Nephroprotective Effects of Gongronema latifolium and Ocimum gratissimum in Diabetic Rats Exposed to Carbon Tetrachloride

    Diabetes is a persisting and deadly disease which occur due to pancreatic dysfunction resulting in decrease or lack of insulin production. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of Gongronema latifolium (GL) and Ocimum gratissimum (OG) on liver and kidney functions of alloxan-induced diabetic rats exposed to 1.0 ml/kg/bw carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), intraperitonially. Forty-five (45) rats divided into 9 groups of 5 rats each were used. Groups 1, 2 and 3 were respectively normal control (NC), diabetic control (DC) and diabetic exposed to CCl4 (DCCl4) on the 14th day. Groups 4, 5 and 6 were diabetic treated with single GL (200 mg/kg), OG (200 ml/kg/bw) and combined GL and OG (100 ml/kg/bw) each, respectively. Groups 7, 8 and 9 were diabetic treated with single leaf GL (200 ml/kg) and exposed to 1.0ml/kg/bw of CCl4 on the 14th day, OG (200 mg/kg/bw) and exposed to 1.0ml/kg/bw of CCl4 on the 14th day and combined GL and OG (100 mg/kg/bw) each and exposed to 1.0ml/kg/bw of CCl4 on the 14th day, respectively. Treatment lasted for 14th days and 24 hours after, animals were sacrificed, blood and liver collected for analysis. Results showed significant (p < 0.05) elevations in AST, ALT, ALP, urea, creatinine, and blood glucose levels, along with decreased albumin levels in the DC and DCCl4 groups compared to NC. Conversely, treatments with GL, OG, and GLOG extracts mitigated these adverse effects, restoring biochemical parameters to near-normal levels. Combined extracts exhibited superior antioxidant and hepato-nephroprotective activities compared to single extracts. Conclusively, the extracts, singly and in combination mitigated the damaging effect of alloxan-induced diabetic rats exposed to CCl4 by exhibiting antioxidant and hepato-nephroprotective effects, evidently shown in the analyzed parameters and histopathological results
