    Supply Responses to Acreage of Major Oilseed Crops in Rajasthan, India

    Oilseed crops are the second most important determinant of the agricultural economy, next only to cereals within the segment of field crops.  Self-sufficiency in oilseeds was attained through “The Yellow Revolution” during the early 1990s and the major ones are soybean, groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, sesame, sunflower, castor, safflower, linseed and niger. Among the nine oilseed crops in India, the highest average contribution to total production of oilseeds is soybean followed by rapeseed & mustard and groundnut. Similarly, the highest average area contribution to the total oilseed area is of soybean (44%) followed by rapeseed & mustard (24%) and groundnut (20%). The main of the study is to know the response of acreage over the selected year. Against this backdrop the present study attempts to employ the Nerlovian lagged adjustment function for significant oilseed crops in Rajasthan to estimate the degree of acreage/supply responsiveness analyses. For the study secondary data from 1997-98 to 2020-21 were collected to obtain the results of acreage responsiveness of oilseed crops like groundnut, rapeseed & mustard and soybean in Bikaner, Alwar and Baran districts respectively.     The present study was conducted in the villages of Sakalo, Sargwan, Ara, and Amatoli in the blocks of Ambikapur and Sitapur, which are both located in the Sarguja district, in the state of Chhattisgarh. A total of 80 farmers were chosen on purpose from each village—20 from each village. The research project "the Socio Economic Profile of Covid-19 Lockdown Affected Farmer in Surguja District of Chhattisgarh" With the use of a personal interview method and scheduled interview schedule. They tabulated, examined, and analysed the data. The profile characteristics of all farmers affected by the lockdown. Growers reported that a majority of (61.25%) young age category, (48.75%) farmers ST category, (45%) illiterate, (40%) famers small land holding, (63%) famers\u27 occupation is agriculture, (68.75%) irrigated type land, (50%) farmers is medium level income, majority of farmers family joint, (50%) farmers house is kaccha type, (55%) sources of drinking water is publicly, and (60%) farmers is a farmer. Low farm equipment levels, with (45%) farmers information sources are few, Understanding the socioeconomic status of farmers would be aided by the outcomes of the current study. The current study will offer helpful direction for comprehending the recommended set of farming methods

    Importance of Writing Content Analysis of Farm Broadcast Programmes of Andhra Pradesh, India

    The study was taken up to investigate the trend and frequency of coverage of agricultural information in popular farm broadcasts namely Pasidi Pantalu and Annadata in a quantitative manner. One-year content of two popular farm programmes of Telegu language namely Pasidi Pantalu and Annadata telecasted over Dooradarshan – Sapthagiri (public sector) and Enadu television (private sector) channel were recorded by using “set top box”. The entire content was categorized in to six categories after preliminary watching. The six categories namely enterprise - wise, crop - wise, organization - wise, package of practice - wise, duration - wise, mode of presentation - wise. The entire content was thoroughly watched, frequency of occurrence of the programmes were counted and percentages worked out. The results indicated that, in the ‘Pasidi pantalu’ programme, more emphasis and more time was allotted to agriculture enterprise (33.49%), whereas in ‘Annadata’ programme, horticulture enterprise occupied first place with 41.55 per cent. Both channels given more emphasis to straight talk mode of presentation with 71.41% and 98.09 % programmes respectively. The study also indicated that, research scientists are the main resources person in both the programmes. Both the channels given least importance to crucial enterprises like Fisheries (7.06% & 3.88%), Sericulture (3.08% & 1.45%) and Poultry (1.14% & 1.58 %). As the growing domestic and international market value of enterprises like; fisheries, poultry and sericulture, the coverage on these enterprises’ needs be to improve in both the programmes. As a public sector channel, the coverage on general information needs to be reduced and replaced with crop and other enterprises related information in Dooradarshan - Sapthagiri. It was also recorded that, there is no coverage on most important crops like Jowar and Ground nut. Instead of research scientists, give preference to the extension scientists from KVKs and DAATTCs, as they have practical and diversified knowledge on crops

    Constraints Faced by Millet Farmers and Millets Processing Units in Madurai District

    Tamil Nadu has four per cent of the land area and three per cent of the water resources at National level. 92 per cent of total land holdings in Tamil Nadu belong to small and marginal farmers. Millets is one of the oldest foods known to mankind. Millets hold enormous hope for food and nutritional security. It is essential to know the constraints faced by millet growers in the millet cultivation and utilizing millet processing units. In view of the International Year of Millets, this study will help the policy developers to take the necessary measures. An Ex-post facto research design was used for the study. A sample size of 120 millet farmers and 10 millet processing units were selected for the study. To find out the most significant factor which influences the respondent, Garrett’s ranking technique was used. Among the constraints faced by the millet farmers animal menace was found to be first rank followed by lack of knowledge on improved varieties as second rank, uncertainty of rainfall as third and unable fetch remunerative price as fourth rank. Among the constraints faced by the processing units lack of millet polish machine ranked as first followed by lack of cooperation among members of processing unit ranked as second and lack of flexibility to operation on various phase of electricity as third rank

    Adoption of Recommended Production Technologies of Soybean by Farmers of Dharwad District of Karnataka, India

    The study was conducted in Dharwad, Hubli and Kalaghatagi taluks of Dharwad district of Karnataka state during 2020-21 with a sample size of 150 soybean farmers. The “Ex-post facto” research design was employed for the study. The data was elicited through personal interview method. There was about 8 per cent of land cultivated with DSb-21 during 2017-18 in Dharwad district, gradually it has reduced to 2 per cent during 2020-2021. About 64.00 per cent had medium level of adoption about recommended cultivation practices of soybean, whereas, only 9.33 and 26.66 per cent of the soybean farmers belonged to high and low level of adoption category, respectively. The results revealed that the farmers had complete knowledge and adoption of recommended variety (Dsb-21), while 86.67 per cent of the farmers adopted recommended sowing time in the kharif season. Further, 85.33 per cent of the farmers adopted spacing as recommended and 80.67 per cent of them have adopted recommended seed rate of 25kg/acre. The study concluded that 39.33 per cent of the farmers follow seed treatment and only 27.33 per cent of them adopted seed inoculation with rhizobium culture. Further 80.66 per cent of the farmers adopted application of FYM as recommended but only 37.33 per cent of the farmers have adopted chemical fertilizer application as recommended. With respect to weedicide application 41.33 per cent of the farmers adopted and cent per cent of the farmers had adopted intercultural operation (hoeing). About 48.00 per cent of the farmers adopted pest and disease management as recommended

    A Study on the Training Needs of Veterinary Officers Working in Andhra Pradesh, India

    The quality of the animal health care services delivered depends on the Knowledge and Skill updation of the qualified veterinary service providers (Veterinary Officers- VO). This study was aimed at studying the Training Need Assessment (TNA) of the VO’s in Andhra Pradesh. A survey was conducted through Google forms in a structured interview schedule by electronically, from 130 veterinary Officers working under state government of Andhra Pradesh. Data was collected through Gmail and WhatsApp, regarding the training needs of VO’s on different parameters covering different major subject areas of field importance and was presented in means and percentages. Most of the respondents were Males (74%) with an average experience in the field is 10 years and majority of them attended 8 subject related trainings in their service. Majority opined that they need training on Blood sample examination (72%), Sheep farming(65%), Ethno veterinary medicine (85%), Skill in surgical operations (86%), Infertility cases therapeutics (84%), Metabolic diseases (75%), Service rules and regulations (97%) and Complete feed preparation (79%). Majority of the respondents needed such trainings once in six months (68%), to be conducted as three day residential (57%) including much practical aspects (92%). Provision of the adequate resources and support by the public and private stakeholders for organizing need based trainings to the Veterinary Officers will help in achieving the knowledge updation of the field veterinarians

    Aims: With many Manipur farmers depending on pineapple cultivation, it was essential to understand the constraints faced by the farmers in pineapple cultivation. Thus, the study aimed to identify the constraints on pineapple cultivation and value-addition activities in the State of Manipur. Study Design: Manipur was purposively selected for the study. Totally three major pineapple growing districts of Manipur viz Senapati, Churachandpur, and Thoubal were considered, 120 pineapple farmers and 60 intermediaries were interviewed with the help of a well-structured questionnaire for collection of suitable information. Methodology: The Garrett ranking technique was used to analyze the data. Results: Lack of awareness on production technology, lack of seasonal labour, lack of physical facilities for processing, lack of training/awareness on pineapple processing, less government support, lack of cold storage and lack of metallic and link roads were the major constraints faced by the pineapple farmers and intermediaries of Manipur

    Perception of Tasar Silkworm Rearers about the Climate Change Impact on the Tasar Silk Production of Maharashtra

    Tasar sericulture is one of the allied sectors of agriculture which is a climate sensitive sector. Understanding farmer’s perception about the climate change impact on the rearing performance tasar silkworm is a key to the development of new climate tolerant technologies so as to encourage the other farmers for adopting sericulture eventually to boost the production of the tasar silk production in the state. Thus, the study was designed to establish farmer’s perception on climate change and its impacts on tasar silkworm rearing performance. The study was conducted in all four tasar silkworm rearing districts of Maharashtra namely Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli and Chandrapur. A total 160 tasar silkworm rearers were selected randomly from all the four districts. Information was collected from each tasar silkworm rearers through Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) and focus group discussions (FGD). Climate Change Perception Index (CCPI) and Climate Change Impact Perception Index (CCIPI) were used to assess the perception about the impact of climate change on tasar silk production.  Weighted Average Index (WAI) was used to analysis the impact. Results showed that majority of the respondents perceived that the yield and production of tasar cocoons production has reduced compared to last ten years. Moreover, frequent loss of the crop is noticed due to sudden change in the climatic conditions during the rearing of silkworm. Similarly, the high incidence of diseases and pest is also noticed thereby affecting the income generation of the tribal tasar farmers of the state. The results of the study will be useful for formulating appropriate policy against the ill-effects of the climate change. The results will also give impetus to the researcher to develop the thermo tolerant and climate change tolerant or resistant varieties or races of tasar silkworm so as to boost the tasar silk production of the state

    Climate Change and Marine Fisheries: Stakeholders\u27 Perspective from Coastal District of Odisha, India

    The marine fisheries sector is severely affected by the impact of climate change. The small-scale fishing communities, their livelihoods and the infrastructure are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change, but it has been occasionally investigated at the regional level. Climate change literature and various reports from government and international agencies indicate that Coastal Odisha is one of the hotspot regions for extreme weather and slow-onset events. In this context, the paper attempts to study how climate change affects small-scale marine fishers through a case of the Kendrapara district of Odisha. The paper attempts to understand the overall fish production scenario. It captures the perceptions of small-scale marine fishers regarding different climate and non-climate drivers through focus group discussions and key informant interviews. The findings from the paper reflect that marine fishers recognize the impact of climate change on the sector in terms of dwindling fish catch, reduction in the number of fishing days, longer fishing trips and damage to boats and nets. The small-scale marine fishers also believe that the impact of climate change in future will be so severe that the sea might engulf their land and settlements

    The article on title “Study of effective Promotional Tools for enhancing the use of Pre-Emergence Herbicide in Paddy Crop” was carried out under the guidance of Dr. NITIN BARKER. Paddy (Oryza sativa) is the major staple food for a large population of world’s population especially in South and East Asia, 65% of the India’s population major staple food is rice. Rice is an important source of food worldwide. However, the growth of weeds in paddy fields pose a major biological threat to higher rice productivity and quality. Weeds have many variable characteristics compared to the crop for examples lack of seed dormancy, uniform growth and high yields. Thus, weeds tend to show larger potential capacity to adapt to stress (e.g., climate change) than crop plants. Consequently, effective management of weed is a vital pre-requisite notable production of rice. For instance, if crop losses of approximately 10–20 % are recovered through effective weed management with the use of appropriate herbicides, there will be additional yield of 0.3–0.6 t/ha. Different weed management practices were studied in paddy in present study were bensulfuron methyl 60 g + 600 g a.i ha-1 as pre emergence followed by mechanical weeding at 30 DAS/T, bispyribac sodium @ 25 g a.i ha-1, farmer’s practice and weedy check. among weed management practices, pre emergence application of bensulfuron methyl + pretilachlor mixture followed by mechanical weeding at 30 DAS/T resulted in higher B:C ratio compared to other methods of weed control. Finally, it could be concluded that there are good opportunities for Herbicide (Stilleto) to create a market space in the study area. The company need to focus on certain factors like farmer’s expectations, field demonstrations and creating awareness in the study area
