Potential of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Livestock Development: A Review
In most developing nations, including India, agricultural extension services are mostly focused on crop husbandry, but public sector animal husbandry activities are frequently dominated by animal breeding and health services. ICT has been widely employed in the study and enhancement of numerous elements of livestock production, research, and education in the United States and worldwide. Specifically, ICT is becoming more important in livestock disease control, dairy herd management, livestock production, and livestock and livestock product marketing. However, the success of ICT in livestock promotion or related areas is dependent on a number of factors, including farmer adoption of ICT, the political and policy environment, farmer education, ICT penetration rate, ICT infrastructure (such as connectivity), and the Rural Information Model etc. So, this paper throws light on the points of such capabilities of ICT for Livestock Development
Social Betterment and Economic Empowerment of Sericulture Farmers in Northern Hilly Zone of Karnataka, India
Sericulture, one of the important enterprises undertaken by farmers in North Karnataka, is an eco-friendly, agro-based, labour intensive, low input and commercially attractive farm enterprise falling under cottage and small-scale sector. Among the factors that contribute for successful cocoon production, socio- economic factors play a significant role in determining the knowledge and adoption levels of sericulture technologies for production of mulberry and cocoons especially in recently adapted areas of Uttar Kannada district. The present study was an ex-post facto questionnaire based research on socio-economic status of sericulture farmers was carried out during 2021-2022 Uttar Kannada district representing hilly zone of Karnataka state. A sample of 50 farmers was selected randomly from eleven villages in thesetaluks. The study revealed that half of the sericulture farmers belonged to middle age (31 to 50 years), as high as 60.00 % farmers had education up to 8th to 10thstandard, 46.00% of the family belonged to 5-8 members per family, and 38% hadlong experience in sericulture while 18-20% were relatively new (< 3 years) to the enterprise with pooradaption rate of the improved technologies and mechanisation (46.00%). Further, 40.00% of farmers fell under low and medium rearing category, 48% farmers belonged to medium brushing of disease free layings per crop (100-200 dfls /crop) and majority (64%)were getting the average yield (60-75 kg/100 dfls) with good management of the crop while 22.00% were getting more than 80kg/100dfls cocoon yield due to improved production techniques. Overall, 36-38 % farmers had medium cost of production, benefit per year and benefit: cost ratio (Rs.40000-45000, Rs.100,000-1,68,000 and Rs 1:3-4,respectively)
Adoption Behavior of Farmers towards Improved Pineapple Production Practices in Uttar Dinajpur District of West Bengal, India
The study was conducted in the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal with the objective of assessing the extent of adoption behavior among farmers towards improved pineapple production practices. A purposive sampling technique was employed, and a total of 120 respondents were selected from seven villages within the Chopra block. Data was collected using a pre-tested schedule and analyzed using appropriate statistical tools and techniques. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of respondents (65.00%) fell within the middle age range. In terms of adoption, about pineapple production technology, 50.83 percent of the respondents had a medium level of adoption, followed by 26.67 percent with low level of adoption and 22.50 percent with high level of adoption. The study also established positive and significant relationships between the independent variables, such as age, educational qualification, annual income, extension contact, mass media exposure, scientific orientation, and risk orientation, and the adoption behavior of farmers. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the adoption behavior of farmers in the study area and highlights the importance of various factors in influencing their level of adoption of improved pineapple production practices
Response of Fertilization of Nitrogen on Agronomical Attributes of Soybean
Soybean also known golden bean is a dual purpose crop grown to meet the requirement of both high protein and oil content. Fertilizers are one of the important components of farming system due to their requirement to provide essential nutrients to crop. The current research work was done to study the effect of the different rates of nitrogen fertilization on the growth and yield of soybean were studied. Field experiments were conducted at Instructional Research Farm, Krishi Nagar, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India during kharif season in the month of July to October in the year 2019‒2020. This research has been conducted in order to examine the beneficial effects of additional application of nitrogen at grain development stage on yield attributes and yield of soybean. The experimental material was early maturing variety of soybean JS 20-34. Treatments were given in 12 combinations in the split plot design. Plant samples were collected at R1 and R3 for dry matter yield and nitrogen determination. Grain yields were determined and grain samples were collected at harvest. A positive grain yield in response to nitrogen fertilizer was observed in different treatments. These imply that additional nitrogen applications are important for getting higher yields. In the current research we came to the conclusion that additional nitrogen fertilizer application to soybean crop has positive impact on several agronomical attributes of the crop
Constraints Faced by Maize Farmers of Tamil Nadu in Use of Smartphone for Accessing Agricultural Information
The study was carried out to analyse the constraints faced by maize farmers of Tamil Nadu in use of smartphone for accessing agricultural information, and to elicit strategies for improving the smartphone usage among maize farmers. Ex- Post Facto Research Design. The selected districts for the study were Perambalur and Cuddalore based on maximum area under maize cultivation. Two blocks were selected from each district, and from the selected blocks, two villages were selected for the study based on maximum area under maize cultivation. The study was conducted during June 2023. Totally 120 respondents were selected for the study based on simple random sampling technique. The responses of the respondents were subjected to frequency and percentage analysis. The constraints were grouped into two categories viz., hardware constraints and software constraints. The suggestions were grouped into three categories viz., hardware strategies, software strategies, and training needs. Most of the respondents reported that the major hardware related constraints were high cost for repair and maintenance of smartphones (70.83%), high data tariff (66.67%), and less knowledge and skill in using smartphone (57.5%). The major software related constraints were less availability of location-specific information (85.00%), information not updated (81.67%), receiving unreliable forward messages (71.67%) and less awareness on agricultural mobile apps/web portals (69.17%). The major strategies suggested by the farmers for improving smartphone usage were provision of assistance by the government to purchase high end smartphone (91.67%), sale of farmer friendly data packs (79.17%), adding voice recognition facility in mobile apps (98.33%), developing maize specific mobile apps (97.50%), developing knowledge of farmers on downloading and operating different apps and portals related to agriculture (99.17%) through method demonstration and trainings. Most of the farmers faced high cost for repair and maintenance of smartphones, high data tariff, and less availability of location-specific information as major constraints. To overcome these constraints State Department of Agriculture may consider providing assistance to farmers to purchase high end smartphones. Farmer friendly data packs and Location specific contents will also enhance smartphone usage behaviour among farmers
Export Status of Fruits and Vegetables from India
Background: Horticulture export is one of the most promising industries, due to rising global demand and the country\u27s diverse agro-climatic system. During the early 1990s, following post-reform, there was an increase in agricultural commodities export which boosted the Indian economy.
Methods: Secondary time series data of fruits and vegetables (fresh and processed) were collected from APEDA and FAO, the methodologies used were Compound Growth Rate, Instability Index, Revealed Comparative Advantages and Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantages.
Results: Fruit and vegetable importers include the UAE, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and others. Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, processed vegetables and fruits, nuts and juices showed positive and significant growth throughout the study period. Whereas, the import of fresh fruits and vegetables also shows a positive and significant growth rate, because some fruits and vegetables are cheaper to import than produce. Revealed Comparative Advantages show disadvantages in the global market. India has to improve its marketing strategy, and storage facilities and improvise their skills for the production and processing of fruits and vegetables, etc. to emerge as a major exporter of fruits and vegetables
Sustainability of Urban Vegetable Gardening in Tamil Nadu, India
Urban vegetable gardens are being developed in many places in India and abroad. A lot of passionate urban dwellers are taking up such initiatives in their own households. A study was conducted on sustainability of Urban vegetable gardening in Tamil Nadu, India with the objective to study the nature of urban vegetable gardening and to develop strategy for sustainability of urban vegetable gardening.
The beneficiaries of vegetable kit distribution programme and other vegetable gardeners were purposively selected. A total of 120 respondents was selected randomly. It was found that about 50 percent of the respondents were house wives and nearly 50 percent had garden in their terrace. Nearly 52 percent of the respondents took up gardening to avoid chemicals while 48 percent took it up as hobby. 100 percent took gardening only for household consumption, none of them had any commercial outlook on the products. Recycled products were utilized by majority of the people (58%), almost equal proportion of respondents purchased material from JDAs office, Shops, online. About 48 percent used coir pith while the remaining used soil as the medium for growth. Homemade composting and vermicompost were used by majority of the respondents to a tune of 1-5 kg per month.
The potager scheme was very well taken by the urban dwellers in Coimbatore but it was discontinued after a year. However, it has caused a lot of awareness among them and their requirements are fulfilled by online sellers. Sustained and profitable terrace gardening requires scientific and precise calculations on inputs and time of use. Planned development in urban and peri urban areas by institutional interventions will lead to sustained and feasible projects which will contribute to the green cover and contribute to the food requirement of the urban areas
Factors Affecting Adoption of Improved Soybean Production Technology in Dewas District of Madhya Pradesh, India
The oilseed legume soy, after groundnut and rapeseed & mustard, has become India\u27s third-most significant oilseed crop in terms of area, production and productivity over the past 40 years. The bulk of India\u27s tiny and marginal farming communities were transformed socio-economically by the use of soybeans, which also made a considerable contribution to the country\u27s oil economy. Production technology for this miracle crop is also continuously upgrading with time. Thus, the present investigation was conducted in five villages of Kannod block of Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh to look after the factors affecting adoption of improved soybean production technology. Six blocks make up the Dewas district: Bagli, Dewas, Kannod, Khategaon, Sonkatch, and Tonkhurd. Out of them, Kannod block was specifically chosen since, over the past 10 years, the area under soybean crop has increased while productivity has steadily decreased in this block. With the help of a structured interview schedule, data was collected purposely from 105 farmers. For calculating relationships between dependent and independent variables correlation coefficient was used. Results of the study revealed that out of thirteen variables, eleven variables were significantly and positively related with factors affecting adoption of Improved Soybean Production Technology. Two variables i.e. age and farming experience were found significantly and negatively related with factors affecting adoption of Improved Soybean Production Technology. Majority of soybean farmers 63.81% reflected medium level of adoption regarding improved production technology. In constraint analysis, lack of on-time availability of improved varieties of seed followed by higher cost of inputs (seed, insecticide, fertilizer and implements) were two major constraints faced by 70.48% and 59.05% soybean farmers respectively. These findings provide insights for future research on factors affecting adoption of improved production technology by soybean farmers
Influential Factors that Affect Farmers\u27 Intention toward Farming
The service and manufacturing sectors grew as mainstream farming declined. Only mainstream farmers contributed to the economy. Agricultural specialties followed. Technology has enhanced grain output for human use, but farmers\u27 satisfaction is crucial. A major goal of this research is to understand the farmer\u27s intentions towards farming. The study is quantitative in nature and takes a deductive, positivist approach. Data were gathered from 350 participants through a structured questionnaire and nonprobability convenience sampling methods. SPSS version 25 and SEM-Amos version 24 were used to analyze the data. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model was used to measure the farmer’s intention, where price risk, biological risk, and climate risk were shown to have a significant negative effect on farmers\u27 intentions toward farming. The calculated value supported the hypothesis. Marketing risk also has a negative impact, but it was found to be insignificant, and the hypothesis was not supported. This study provides valuable insight for policymakers looking to understand why farmers are discouraged from farming when a country must focus on farming to become self-sufficient in its supply of food. Additionally, the study provides some avenues for academics to pursue further research in order to understand why abnormalities occur for such a controllable factor (price risk) and what strategic actions the concern relevant to the nation\u27s farming will take
Profile Characteristics of Extension Personnel in Association with Attitude towards the Service Delivery System of Agro Service Centres
The attitude of extension personnel towards the service delivery system of Agro Service Centres is developed based on their work experience in Agro Service Centres and the response they have received from the beneficiary farmers for the services they have been extended to them. The present study was conducted among 60 extension personnel associated with Agro Service Centres from the three districts of Kerala representing the central, northern, and southern Kerala, during the year 2019. Data collection was done using a pre-tested interview schedule, and analysis and interpretation of the data were done using statistical tools such as frequency, percentage, and correlation analysis. Based on the analysis of the data, it was observed that the majority (56.67%) of the extension personnel had a highly favourable attitude towards the service delivery system of the Agro Service Centre. The majority of the extension personnel working in ASCs belonged to the middle and old age categories, and the majority had up to five years of experience in extension work. The majority of the extension personnel possess medium extension service orientation and work commitment and moderate to high problem-solving and leadership abilities. The correlation analysis revealed that the attitude of extension personnel was positively and significantly correlated with their extension service orientation, work commitment, problem-solving ability, and leadership ability
