Epidemiology and Management of Downy Mildew of Isabgol: A Review
The downy mildew of Isabgol caused by Peronospora plantaginis is a major limiting factor for its production and productivity. The disease appears in severe form every year and caused extensive quantitative as well as qualitative damage to the crop and makes the cultivation of Isabgol unprofitable. It causes a variety of symptoms on leaves such as chlorotic patches accompanied by ashy-white downy growth. The variations in the incidence and severity of downy mildew depend on the environmental conditions. During favourable environmental conditions, it causes serious yield reduction. Since no resistant varieties are available against this disease; therefore, the use of chemical fungicides is the only option available to the farmers to control this disease. However, it can effectively be controlled by the use of chemicals but larger breeding programmes to evolve resistant varieties need to be initiated
Impact of Mulberry Cultivation on Beneficiary Farmers in Amravati District, India
The present study was conducted in Amravati district in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra state. Six villages were selected from one taluka respectively. The 80 respondents were selected from 6 villages. The data were collected by personal interview method with the help of a structured interview schedule. The data were tabulated, analyzed and interpreted. The variables namely occupation, land holding, annual income, income from sericulture, farming experience, sources of information, training received and marketing facilities are positively and highly significant with social and economic impact at 0.01 level of probability. The variables namely education and extension contact are positively significant with social and economic impact at 0.05 level of probability. Whereas, the age of the respondent sericulturists had a non-significant relationship with the social and economic impact of mulberry cultivation. The financial gain by the beneficiaries of mulberry cultivation from one acre per year (4 rotations) was Rs.1,00,000. The majority of the respondent sericulturists faced problems related to the shortage of irrigation water, high labour charges, markets far away from the sericulture unit and lack of knowledge about disease control in mulberry

Perception of Veterinarians towards Consequences and Suitability of Sex Sorted Semen Technology
An ex-post-facto exploratory research study was carried out in the state of Andhra Pradesh with the specific objective to know the perception of the veterinarians towards consequences and suitability of sex-sorted semen technology. These consequences include Desirable vs Undesirable, Anticipated vs Unanticipated, Direct vs Indirect and in addition suitability was also assessed in terms of sustainability, compatibility, socio-cultural and economic aspects. It was found that three-fourths of the veterinarians (76.67%) had a medium level of perception towards sex-sorted semen technology in terms of its consequences and suitability to dairy farmers. The study thus, reveals that innovations that are compatible and in accordance with farmers’ situations will be adopted following its diffusion. Consequences and suitability also need to be taken care of while diffusing any innovation among the farming community
Comparative Study on Snacking Behaviour and Pattern of Working and Non-Working Women of Hisar City, India
The present study was conducted to assess and compare the snacking behavior of working and non-working women of Hisar City. The aim of the present study was to compare snacking behavior of working and non-working women of Hisar City. For this study, a sample of one hundred and twenty women in age 25-45 years, 60 each working and non-working women were drawn randomly from Hisar city. The sample of working women included 20 each engineer, advocates, and teaching professionals. Non-working women were selected having an income, and age similar to their counterparts. Information on snacking behavior like the preference for snacks over regular meals, time and place of snacking, types of snacks taken, and source of procuring snacks, etc. were recorded in the questionnaire. The data indicated that mere 15 percent of working and 23.3 percent of non-working women preferred snacks over regular meals. The majority (90.0%) of respondents preferred to take salty snacks followed by sweet (85.0%) and sweet and salty (56.7%). The result revealed that non-working women have more cravings for snacks than working women but they prefer more of homemade snacks to outside snacks
An Economic Analysis and Resource Use Efficiency of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) and Its Competing Crops Cultivation in Haryana, India
The present study has been conducted in the Mahendergarh and Nizampur blocks of Mahendergard district and Rewari block from Rewari district of Haryana state. In order to draw meaningful inferences from data, the descriptive statistics, resource use efficiency worked out by Cobb-Douglas production function technique and constraints were identified on the basis of their rating (severe, moderate and least) in production of sesame. The results of the study showed that gross returns and return over variable cost per hectare were Rs. 47,048, Rs. 56,349, Rs. 54,948 and Rs. 26,697 Rs. 27,902, Rs. 32,575 in sesame, bajra and cluster bean, respectively. Benefit cost ratio (BCR) over total cost was accounted 1.16, 1.09 and 1.21 in sesame, bajra, and cluster bean crops respectively. It has been found that sesame provides lower returns in term of gross returns as well as returns over variable cost as compared to its major competing crops bajra and cluster bean. The regression analysis has brought out that the ratio of MVP/MFC is (>1) there exists sufficient potential in spending on fertilizers, irrigation and plant protection measures. The constraints faced by farmers indicated that the technological up gradation, effective market support (for inputs & output) were required to make sesame production a remunerative enterprise
Retention Index: A Measure to Quantify the Retention of Rural Youth in Agriculture
Retention of rural youth in agriculture in rural areas has become an inevitable phenomenon in our country. The rural youth population of India is slowly deserting their origin and swarming toward the urban areas. This has several implications for the future of Indian agriculture and India’s food security. Experts felt that there is a need to retain rural youths in agriculture because they can play a significant role in ensuring food security if they are encouraged to involve in agriculture farming. Having an insight into the rationale behind the retention of rural youth in agriculture is hence crucial. Bearing in mind this point of view, a study was conducted among 300 rural youths with an agricultural background. The retention of rural youth has been studied by developing a suitable measurement methodology that quantifies their retention in agriculture. The Retention Index was developed and the composite Retention Index worked out was 73.00. On the basis of the results of retention index these indicators are very important in the development of projects or programmes by policymakers, development agencies and extension functionaries should consider these indicators while preparing and planning programs or projects for the development of rural youth
Present Practices and Constraints of Juice and Gur Production from Date Palm Trees in Bangladesh
Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the present status of date palm juice and gur, to assess the socioeconomic characteristics of respondents involved in date palm juice and gur production, and to explore the production-based constraints of date palm gur.
Study Design: The cross-sectional survey method was used in this study, along with a descriptive research design.
Place and Duration of the Study: The study was conducted in 4 upazilas (sub-district), namely Bagha, Lalpur, Khjjuria and Dumuria, under the 4 districts Rajshahi, Natore, Jessore and Khulna in Bangladesh, from November 2020 to March 2021.
Methodology: Out of 133 farmers, 97 were selected as samples using a random sampling technique. Data collected using a structured questionnaire were subjected to descriptive analysis, including frequency count, percentage, and mean for describing the level of selected variables.
Results: Rajshahi had a maximum area covered by date palm trees (12.02 ha), the highest number of trees (1129), and the highest amount of produced gur (14454 kg) compared to other districts. The greatest percentages of farmers were old (43.3%) and had a high annual income (42.3%). All the farmers used seed as propagating material. In case of constraints, ‘decrease of number of gachi’ ranked first followed by ‘adulteration of gur’ second and ‘decrease of number of date palm trees’ third.
Conclusion: It can be concluded that a decreased number of gachi is one of the major constraints for juice and gur production in Bangladesh. Continuous training and management of date palm trees, as well as the production of juice and gur with scientific technology, will improve farmers’ incomes and livelihoods
Management Practices, Perceived Constraints and Estimation of Biochemical Parameters in Indigenous Goats of Gwalior City of Central India
Aim: A study was conducted in order to analyze goat rearing practices prevailing in the Gwalior City of Central India and to identify the constraints in goat farming.
Study Design: Data of ninety six indigenous goats of 2 to 5 age group from thirty respondents from the district was collected.
Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out in Gwalior City of Central India during July 2023.
Methodology: The data pertaining to goat rearing practices being followed and constraints being faced were collected with the help of pre-structured interview schedule after ensuring its reliability and validity. To evaluate the nutritional status of the animals the blood sample of twenty four randomly selected female goats of 2 to 5 years of age was taken from Jugular vein for the normal biochemical profile.
Results: It was observed that total protein and serum calcium level was significantly lower than normal value, while. Alkaline phosphates, SGOT and SGPT and blood urea levels are higher than the normal values.
Conclusion: It is concluded that goats reared on extensive system of rearing have poor reproductive performance (higher age at first kidding and kidding interval and low twinning rate) due to lack of scientific management and feeding practices by goat farmers of Gwalior City of Central Indi
Economic Analysis of Plant Growth Promoter - Pulse Magic Application on Pigeonpea Production in Karnataka, India
Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L) mill. sp.) is one of the major pulse crops of the tropics and sub-tropics and has several unique characteristics. The study was conducted in the Raichur district of Kalyan Karnataka region. Pulse Magic is a combi product, released by the University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur as it contains major nutrients, micronutrients and Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) which help the crop to achieve maximum yield potential. A total sample size of 120 respondents consisting of 60 users and 60 non-users of Pulse Magic. The total cost of cultivation of pigeon peas with Pulse Magic use was (₹ 23238) considerably higher than non-users (₹ 22344). The net return accrued was also highest in Pulse Magic users (₹ 16951.62) compared to non-users (₹ 11287.52). The returns per rupee of investment were found to be marginally higher in Pulse Magic (1.73) users compared to non-users (1.50). The per acre incremental gain yield was 19.52 per cent due to the application of Pulse Magic in comparison with non-adoption of Pulse Magic technology. The partial budgeting revealed a higher net gain of ₹ 5667 per acre in Pulse Magic users compared to non-users of Pulse Magic on pigeon pea production. The results of the probit model indicated that age, education, variety and extension contact were statistically influencing in adoption of Pulse Magic technology
