SENIMAN BERNYALA: DIGITIZING AND EXPERIMENTING THE MOTIF OF ARTWORKS FOR IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE: SYED AHMAD JAMAL
Get PDFAs the world adjusted to the new normal following the pandemic, the art and culture industry, particularly museums and galleries, transformed its approaches to preserving and showcasing artworks. This study focuses on methods for digitizing the works of renowned local artist Syed Ahmad Jamal, with the goal of creating an immersive exhibition to ensure the long-term preservation and sustainability of his art. The study aims to preserve the artworks of local artists by digitizing them in a way that faithfully reflects their intended meanings and philosophies. These digital adaptations were then incorporated into an immersive art exhibition. To achieve this, data was collected through an analysis of selected case studies from both local and international immersive exhibitions and galleries. Additionally, a semistructured interview was conducted with a senior member of the Galeri PETRONAS Art Collection Management Team, who brought over 30 years of experience in curating exhibitions. The collected data was analysed to inform the development of the final output: an immersive exhibition titled Seniman Bernyala. This exhibition featured a mini-immersive theater and a video presentation, showcasing animated, digitized versions of Syed Ahmad Jamal’s artworks
FRESHWATER FISHERIES RESEARCH AND DISCOVERY CENTRE: REJUVENATION OF NATIVE SPECIES

However, the increasing presence of invasive species poses a significant threat to these native populations, reducing biodiversity and disrupting the river ecosystems. This research explores the challenges faced by native freshwater fish in Malaysia's rivers due to invasive species. It outlines the establishment of the Freshwater Fisheries Research and Discovery Centre as a vital initiative to address these issues. The proposed centre will focus on increasing the populations of native fish species through dedicated research, scientific breeding programs, habitat restoration, and strategic reintroduction efforts. By conducting advanced research, the centre aims to develop effective methods for the propagation and conservation of native species. Additionally, the centre will implement systems for early detection and management of invasive species, thereby protecting the native fish populations from further decline
A CURATION OF HOPE: MALAYSIA’S EAST COAST REGIONAL CANCER CENTRE
Get PDFMalaysia’s East Coast Regional Cancer Centre (ECRCC) endeavours to establish a novel facility dedicated to addressing the comprehensive needs of cancer patients and their families, extending beyond mere medical treatment. Recognising that patients require not only information about their treatments but also emotional support, practical guidance, and a supportive community of individuals going through similar experiences, this centre aims to fulfil these requirements. Through the design of a nurturing environment of hope, ECRCC seeks to provid eessential emotional and psychological support to cancer patients and their families. Functionally, the design requires meeting three noble objectives, i.e. (i) to meet the needs of cancer care for the East Coast region where there is a clear lack of cancer treatment services; (ii) to establishment focus on the distinct needs of cancer patients and their relatives from East coast region compassing the state of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and northern Johor; and (iii) to act as a one- stop information centre for cancer thus reduce misinformation, educate and raising awareness on cancer and cancer treatment to the region. Exploratory research from design precedent, technical case studies and a detailed understanding of the operational requirements of the centre were conducted. The ECRCC aspires to establish a compassionate and well equipped space and facilities that attends to the multifaceted needs of cancer patients and their families, fostering emotional well-being, offering accurate information, and creating a supportive community

MANGROVE ECOTOURISM AND CONSERVATION CENTRE AT PULAU KETAM, KLANG, SELANGOR
Get PDFMangrove planting is very popular, however, many attempts to do so fall short of establishing significant, diversified, useful, and self-sustaining mangrove forests because of the community's lack of involvement, mono-species planting, and poor choices of location. The issue that inspired this project is the lack of awareness of the mangrove ecosystem and its potential benefits among the inhabitants of Pulau Ketam, in Klang. Hence, the centre presents an opportunity to explore a visionary ecosystem that redefines ecotourism for asustainable future. This project aims to create an ecotourism mangrove and conservation centre focusing on sustaining the future of the mangrove in Malaysia and experimenting with the mangrove potential through educative, recreational, and research approaches. There are three objectives of this research. The first objective is to propose sustainable seed cultivation techniques and research centre through advanced technology. The second objective is to establish involvement of local communities and stakeholders to promote engagement and explore new potential of the mangrove products. The third objective is to explore the potential of mangrove ecotourism as a means to promote the conservation and sustainable use of mangrove ecosystems in coastal settlement areas. The research methodologies adopted for this study are literature review, in-depth interview, case studies, and precedent studies. The proposed site is located at Pulau Ketam, Klang. The site was chosen because of the depletion of the mangrove area which needs to be revived urgently. The project will be Mangrove Ecotourism and Conservation Centre with the concept of “Interwoven Roots” with include a visitor centre, a research lab, a boat dock, an accommodation and an observatory tower that utilises advanced technology to provide visitors with an immersive experience of the mangrove forest. The centre also serves as a research and educational hub, providing visitors with opportunities to learn about the unique biodiversity of the mangrove ecosystem and the threats facing it. It is designed to engage visitors in a unique and immersive experience of the mangrove ecosystem, promoting education, conservation, and sustainable livelihoods. In addition, it promotes sustainable livelihoods and engages with the local community through programs that promote ecotourism and conservation efforts. The design incorporates local SMEs into its operations, providing economic opportunities and promoting sustainable development in the region
EAST COAST IDENTITY OF KUANTAN: TAMAN GELORA AS A RECREATIONAL COASTAL PARK
Get PDFThis project aims to transform the Taman Gelora site in Kuantan into a coastal park in order to promote Kuantan's east coast identity. As a result, it is proposed that this project include the beach as an extension of Taman Gelora in order to create a coastal recreational park. The project is in the state of Pahang, east of Kuantan, and faces the South China Sea. The park is designated as a local park and is open to the public for recreation. The park, which covers approximately 28 hectares, was established in the 1980s. Taman Gelora is made up of a number of man-made lakes and other recreational amenities. Some of the issues identified include a disjointed shore, deteriorating water quality, and ineffective facilities. There are several entrances to the area, but the park itself is located on a slightly hidden edge ofKuantan, making it less visible to unknowing eyes. Based on these situations, the project has aimed at addressing the identified issues while also successfully promoting Taman Gelora as a recreational coastal park that can be the pride of Kuantan as an important east coast city
KUALA PERLIS GATEWAY: ACCENTUATING KUALA PERLIS AS NEW WATERFONT ATTRACTION
Get PDFThis project is about accentuating a new waterfront attraction at Kuala Perlis. The place is facing several issues such as 1) there are a lot of dull public spaces with a lack of facilities, 2) no proper linkages and sense of direction from one place to another to guide visitors, and 3) No reflection of local identity as fisherman village. Therefore, this project aims to revive this place by enhancing the image of the Waterfront and unifying the spaces within Kuala Perlis. There are three (3) objectives of this study which are to provide vibrant places for leisure and tourism activities promote the identity of Kuala Perlis as well as the International Transit Hub, to induce uniqueness into the design of the commercial area that will generate the local economy and to enhance the waterfront connectivity that links all the sites and promotes pedestrian-friendly environment. A few methods were adopted to achieve the objectives, 1) study on the waterfront tourism, 2) inventory checklist for Kuala Perlis, and 3) observation during the site visit. The data has been analysed to enhance waterfront public realms, waterfront trading centers, and accessibility of the area. Design improvement was developed based on the results during the site visit and the desk study. Thus, appropriate design elements are proposed that enhance the area's identity, which could promote the sustainability of Kuala Perlis

REVITALIZING COMMUNITY WITH TRADITIONAL DESIGN: OUTLOOK PLATFORM, ENTRANCE ARCHWAY, AND BRIDGE RAILINGS AT KAED MALAY HERITAGE LIVING LAB
Get PDFThis project intends to enliven and give back the sense of belonging to community through a familiar setting of the local Malay traditional elements. The KAED Malay Living Heritage Lab is a part of public space in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) that interlocks between active contexts including multiple faculties in IIUM, student hostel, external institutions and commercial spaces. In this project, public streetscape along the adjacent river, and a lookup point as a new structure to the site is proposed to benefit the community around the context to become an active "third place". The ultimate goal of this project is to propose a design of an outlook platform, an entrance archway and bridge railings at the KAED Malay Heritage Living Lab at IIUM. This project is in line with the second mission of IIUM which is to emphasize sustainable development in Malaysia and the Muslim world. After a site analysis and case study was conducted, adjacent to a restored "Rumah Kutai" that have been installed in the site in 2018, a design theme of "Nostalgia" was introduced in the design to evoke a sense of familiarity and belonging as a means to give back the public space to IIUM community. Within this design concept, the elements of public engagement, group gathering, cultivating knowledge of the traditional heritage and celebration of Islamic elements in a traditional build environment is applied. It gives a potential new breath to the site by celebrating elements of the past for the projection of the future with increased accessibility, functionality, and aesthetic appeal for the public community in IIUM
