    SOFT-SHELL CRABS ECO-TOURISM CENTRE IN KUALA GULA, PERAK

    The depletion of mud crab population within mangrove areas in Malaysia is primarily due to over-catching, and a lack of breeding centre. The core issue in Kuala Gula Mangrove area in Perak is the depletion of mud crabs, leading to a reduction in soft-shell crab numbers despite their high demand as a seafood source. Soft shell crab is an authentic food delicacy in Perak. Consequently, there is an opportunity to establish an a centre that becomes breeding facilities for soft shell crab and mud crab plus research facilities that increase the production of species and related products. This centre will also become tourists attraction to see the breeding process, tour at mangrove area, and taste the delicate soft shell crabs' cuisine. The objective of this thesis is to design an ecotourism centre focused on soft-shell crab production and mud crab breeding, while simultaneously promoting tourism and aquaculture. Specific goals include offering workshops on soft-shell crab processing for fishermen nationwide, breeding and releasing significant numbers of mud crabs to restore ecological balance in the estuary and establishing appropriate dining and tourism facilities to enhance soft-shell crab production. Data collection methods employed include literature reviews, site studies, in-depth interviews, precedent studies, and case analyses. Findings suggest that the site's proximity to mangrove forests, the natural habitat of mud crabs, makes it suitable for the construction of an ecotourism centre

    REPOSITIONING FIREFLIES’ SANCTUARY AT THE NORTHERN BANK OF KERIAN RIVER, PENANG (NATURAL LANDSCAPE HERITAGE TOURISM)

    Mangrove fireflies from the genus Pteroptyx contribute to a nature tourism called entomotourism. This species is an ecotourism attraction in Malaysia because tourists enjoy their synchronous bioluminescent flashing in large numbers on the mangrove trees at night. However, this firefly habitat is not protected as forest reserves and is threatened by habitat destruction and fragmentation, indicating that both their numbers and habitats have been declining. Therefore, this proposed design idea is to treasure the new natural landscape heritage tourism by engaging users with the natural element in the site of Kerian River firefly sanctuary at the physical border between Penang & Perak by revealing the ecological and natural heritage values. Through targeted interviews and surveys, a comprehensiveunderstanding of the geographic scope, magnitude, focal species, and other attributes of the Kerian River firefly's sanctuary tourism sites was established. Our surveys revealed that light pollution of artificial light, water pollution in Kerian river caused by the nearby industrial area and the riverbank erosion caused by the destructive wave produced by the “Kenka boats” for fishing activities were major disturbances or threats to the habitat. Finally, we provide recommendations for transforming tourist behavior to minimize the impact on firefly habitats. By developing design concepts, ideas and strategic plans that incorporate these recommendations, the Kerian River firefly sanctuary at Penang sites which is an environmentally sensitive area (ESA) can enhance the visitor experience, protect natural resources, benefit local communities, and help promote the conservation of fauna biodiversity

    Social media has noted a wide range of users throughout the world. One of the famous social media platforms to share unlimited photos and videos is Instagram. Instagram offers great ideas and inspiration based on an eye-catching Instagrammable setting that serves as a backdrop for a perfect photo. The term ‘Instagrammable’ is frequently defined as visually attractive or interesting such that it lends itself to being photographed and posted on social media. For architecture-based and design-based, the term is a new adjective that is used to describe a scenic or visually attractive urban design. In Malaysia, one of the potential sites to be developed as an Instagrammable area is KL Sentral. KL Sentral was chosen because of its strategic location as a hub of global connectivity that is surrounded by various types of dthat can enhance urban lifestyle with unrivalled accessibility. KL Sentral also ntral also was chosen based on three issues which are wear and tear, visual al character, and walkability. Therefore, a project titled Instagrammable Transit of KL Sentral is proposed to enhance KL Sentral as the state-of-the-art transportation hub

    RESTORING HISTORICAL CITY OF MEDAN BANDAR ALOR SETAR

    The proposed landscape architecture project aims to restore the historic and cultural heritage of Medan Bandar Alor Setar and its surroundings. Since 1735, Alor Setar has become the centre of administration, under the Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Abidin Mu’adzam Shah II (1710-1778). He was the nineteenth Ruler of the state of Kedah. Uniquely, Alor Setar is one of the oldest Malay Royal Towns located on the northern part of the Peninsula loaded with authentic heritage treasures. Due to rapid urbanisations, uncontrolled developments can affect the heritage assets of the site. The spills of development within the city centre have potential to change the site's historic and cultural identity. Therefore, the project proposes a restorative solution using landscape solutions to protect the identity of the place and its society with a concept of 'Intertwine of Remembrance’

    THE HIVE BICYCLE HUB DESIGN

    The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is committed to fostering a sustainable and bike-friendly campus environment as part of its broader green initiative. This research seeks to identify a comprehensive design approach for a bicycle hub facility that resolves bicycle users' issues, such as bicycle safety and storage facilities. Utilising a qualitative approach, data was gathered through case studies, surveys, and observations. A multidisciplinary KAED student group named "Arkana", comprised of architecture, quantity surveying, and applied arts and design students, collaborated to design the bicycle hub facility. The beehive concept has been applied to establish a connection between bicycle users and nature to create a sustainable campus and develop a healthy mindset for a greener future in IIUM. The "Hive" bicycle hub design includes a modular hexagonal honeycomb structure that enhances durability, accessibility, safety, and convenience to encourage increased bicycle use among students and staff of IIUM. Key features include sheltered bicycle storage, a repair workshop, a retail outlet for bicycle parts and accessories, a cafeteria, a washroom, and a locker room. The "Hive" bicycle hub supports IIUM's sustainability goals, reduces carbon emissions, and promotes a healthier campus lifestyle by providing these amenities. Its design incorporates universal and passive principles, including natural lighting, ventilation, and a rainwater collection system. The project is expected to significantly contribute to the university's green initiatives and create a model for other institutions aiming to adopt similar bike-friendly strategies

    EMPOWERING SMALL-SCALE FISHERMEN: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES OF FISH CENTER IN BATU MAUNG, PENANG

    The fishery sector in Batu Maung, Penang, plays a significant role in the local economy and cultural identity, with small-scale fishermen serving as one of the vital contributors.. This paper provides an overview of a socio-economic analysis conducted to understand the dynamics and challenges faced by small-scale fishermen in Batu Maung and their impact on the broader fishery sector in the country. The qualitative and quantitative research methods that include interviews, literature review and case study. were used to examine some aspects of the industry namely the socio-economic characteristics of small-scale fishermen, their fishing practices, access to resources, income levels, and livelihood sustainability. In addition to that, the paper has also investigated the role of the fishery sector in supporting local livelihoods, generating income, and preserving cultural heritage in Batu Maung. Furthermore, the paper also identified opportunities for enhancing the resilience and sustainability of small-scale fisheries in Batu Maung, such as promoting community-based management approaches, supporting alternative livelihoods, improving market linkages, and enhancing resource governance. Efforts in addressing these challenges and leveraging local strengths for greater benefits may assist the fishery sector in Batu Maung to achieve greater socio-economic development, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation, ensuring the long-term well-being of small-scale fishermen and the broader community

    This project takes place in a former landfill in Alam Impian, Shah Alam, where it aims to repurpose a former landfill into a community-friendly energy park by addressing social, environmental and economic aspects. The energy park aims to educate the users on energy and waste management, the process of waste from site for environmental care, and the creation of opportunities for nearby sites to be developed into more commercialised land use and systems that help the site to be self-sustained. Document analysis, site inventory and SWOT analysis were carried out along with risk assessments to identify the site's potential and constraints. The analysis was concluded with an Analysis of Interconnected Decision Areas (AIDA) for synthesis.
