Pea MUlti-STress adaptation and biological regulations for yield improvement and stability
Prod 2019-88k BAP GEAPSI INRANational audienceProtein crops including pea are of high environmental and nutritional interest within the current context of climate change and reduction of inputs. However, pea yield irregularity due to multiple biotic and abiotic stresses limits its development in European cropping systems. Targetting muti-stress resistance and seed yield stability, PeaMUST (Pea MUlti-STress adaptation and biological regulations for yield improvement and stability) is an 8-year large French national project (2012- 2020) aiming at improving pea varieties to boost their introduction in cropping systems. Benefitting from an exceptional partnership of 28 public and private organisations and a wide range of skills and research areas, PeaMUST[1] takes advantage of the latest sequencing, genotyping and phenotyping technologies to: Identify new pea ideotypes through genomic selection programs conducted on panels of spring and winter peas Carry out translational genomics analyses of resistance to main stresses and enable the development of marker-assisted selection for durable resistance Optimize plant-symbiotic interactions and evaluate the impact of aerial and root architecture-controlling genes on stress tolerance

Direct and indirect phototransformation of triclosan in wetland water
International audienceTriclosan is an antimicrobial agent incorporated in many household products such as soaps, detergents, and toothpaste. It is widely distributed in aquatic resources, potentially toxic, and can bioaccumulate in various organisms. Passive water treatment systems such as constructed wetlands have shown potential to limit triclosan pollution. However, the most influential environmental factors for its transformation must be better characterized in order to improve wetland design for sustainable triclosan removal. This study investigated three factors affecting the aqueous phototransformation of triclosan in wetlands: pH, nitrate concentration, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, using a three-parameter three-level Box Behnken experimental design. Nitrate and DOC were selected for being common surface water photoinducers, thereby promoting the formation of radical species that promote triclosan phototransformation. The effect of pH on triclosan photodegradation was also tested given that triclosan’s pKa of 8.2 is close to typical pH values of wetland water. Both direct and indirect phototransformation of triclosan followed pseudo first-order kinetics. The results showed that direct phototransformation increased as the pH increased. Conversely, in the indirect phototransformation experiments, triclosan phototransformed the fastest at the lowest amounts of DOC for pH values greater than triclosan’s pKa. The Box Behnken Model analysis revealed that pH and DOC concentrations significantly affected triclosan indirect photodegradation rates. At pH 6 (pH pKa), the highest phototransformation rates were obtained with the lowest DOC concentrations. Both direct and indirect phototransformation experiments formed several phototransformation products, including 2,4-dichlorophenol. At pH 6, phototransformation products were continuously formed and accumulated; whereas at pH 8 and 10, the phototransformation products were formed and depleted. The results showed that minimal changes in classical wetland designs would be needed to improve triclosan removal by photodegradation
