    No full text

Towards a spatio-temporal atlas of 3D cellular parameters during leaf morphogenesis

    No full text
International audienceMorphogenesis is a complex process that integrates several mechanisms from the molecular to the organ scales. In plants, division and growth are the two fundamental cellular mechanisms that drive morphogenesis. However, little is known about how these mechanisms are coordinated to establish functional tissue structure. A fundamental bottleneck is the current lack of techniques to systematically quantify the spatio-temporal evolution of 3D cell morphology during organ growth. Using leaf development as a relevant and challenging model to study morphogenesis, we developed a computational framework for cell analysis and quantification from 3D images and for the generation of 3D cell shape atlas. A remarkable feature of leaf morphogenesis being the formation of a laminar-like structure, we propose to automatically separate the cells corresponding to the leaf sides in the segmented leaves, by applying a clustering algorithm. The performance of the proposed pipeline was experimentally assessed on a dataset of 46 leaves in an early developmental state

2017 IEEE INTERNATIONAL GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING SYMPOSIUM (IGARSS) Conference Date : JUL 23-28, 2017 Conference Location : Fort Worth, TXInternational audienceThis study aimed to assess the potential of GLAS (Geoscience Laser Altimeter System) LiDAR data to overcome the saturation at high AGB values of existing AGB map on Madagascar (Vieilledent's AGB map [1]). First, spatially distributed estimations of AGB were obtained from GLAS data. Second, the difference between the Vieilledent's AGB map and GLAS derived AGB at each GLAS footprints location was calculated and a spatially distributed additional correction factors were obtained. Thanks to the spatial structure of these additional correction factors, an ordinary kriging interpolation was thus performed to provide a continuous correction factor map. Finally, the existing and the correction factor map were summed to improve the Vieilledent's AGB map. Results showed that the integration of GLAS data overcome the saturation at high AGB of Vieilledent's AGB map and allow AGB estimation until 650 t/ha (maximum AGB values from Vieilledent AGB map was 550 t/ha)

Sociotechnical system analysis of weeding, key step for designing agro-ecological systems at the watershed scale

In Martinique (French West Indies) there is high pesticide pressure because of monoculture with high demand of farm inputs, linked to tropical conditions suitable to the growth of pathogens and weeds. This pressure cause high river pollution, in particular herbicides pollution which are the most used pesticides on this island. Thus, it is urgent to decrease the uses of herbicides at the watershed scale. Our work proposes a participatory methodology to design innovative agri- cultural systems decreasing herbicide pressure on the river. The watershed scale is a coherent level for actions reducing river pollution because of the integration of continuous hydrologic flows. However, watersheds, such as our study site, usually hold a high diversity of farms and cropping systems that are integrated into social, economic and environmental contexts. This is the reason why our question is how making a participatory process suited for designing inno- vative agricultural systems onto a heterogeneous territory, for a com on purpose of reducing herbicides uses? We conducted an in depth analysis of the sociotechnical system of agricul- ture in Martinique, to highlight brakes and levers of innovations at the institutional level, and the different innovation strategies of actors. Locks of the dominant regime explained why we are currently in a weak agroecological modernisation process of agriculture, focused on the maximal efficiency of farms inputs and the reduction of negative impacts, instead of redesign- ing agricultural systems (diversification, mixed cropping, agroforestry ...). The analysis of the sociotechnical system allowed us to understand the mechanisms at different levels (markets in-stitutions and regulations, agrofood chains, local networks, farmers knowledge and information services...) that lock the system against radical innovation. We also showed the mechanisms of how innovation niches, from plot to regional institutions, can influence the dominant regime. This first step of our work allowed us to identify the main brakes to be reduced, the sources of local solutions for reducing herbicides and to choose pertinent actors for our participatory process. These results will be used to design together agricultural systems that are adapted to the socioeconomic context of our watershed

National audienceEnvironmental policies often include exemptions for some firms, e.g. the smallest emitters. This text explores the implications of such exemptions in the case of an emission tax, and in the presence of monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) costs. We develop an analytical framework capturing the trade-off between the cost-effectiveness of a broader tax base, and the savings on MRV costs enabled by a partial coverage. We characterize the optimal threshold below which firms should be exempted. Since determining this threshold is demanding in terms of information regarding firm-level MRV and abatement costs, we propose a simple approximation requiring knowledge of these costs only at the aggregate level. We apply this framework to assess the welfare implications of such an instrument in the case of greenhouse gas emissions from European agriculture. The findings indicate that exempting the smallest emitters may provide significant savings on MRV costs compared to the full coverage, while still incentivizing cost-effective reductions in emissions
